Smug Smedley on how he will use PS3 to topple WoW

"I absolutely do [think we'll see that (toppling WoW)], and in fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase. It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It's going to be very big. Console online gaming in general I think is going to be one of the next huge phases of growth in the online gaming space." - John Smedley on developing an MMORPG to topple World of Warcraft.

Graphics cards did not sink Star Wars Galaxies, nor is it the reason Vanguard: Saga of Heroes failed.  Graphics cards had nothing to do with the mediocre bleh that is Pirates of the Burning Sea, nor did graphics play any part in the sinking of Gods and Heroes.

The problem is, John Smedley seems to have the exact opposite effect of the Midas Touch.   While everything Midas touched turned to gold, everything John Smedley comes in contact with turns to shit.

There are several developers working on console MMORPG titles which have far more potential than SOE.  The main reason SOE will never topple WoW is because they have lost nearly all consumer confidence.   SOE is synonymous with clusterfuck.    SOE had a decent console MMORPG with Everquest Online Adventures, but they let the title wither away and die of neglect for PC projects.   Console MMORPG is the new industry buzz word.  If you don't mention console MMORPG at some point, you are not a player and Smed knows this.

Are we now expected to think that Smug Smed bought magic beans that will grow a console MMORPG beanstalk that leads SOE to the MMORPGoose that lays golden eggs?  Is The Agency the holy grail of MMORPG's post WoW?

For now, we can continue chuckling at John Smedley as he and SOE reinvent themselves on what seems like a weekly basis while they desperately grasp for the slipping market share.

I think Smed needs to be committed because he's obviously delusional.

Well SOE lost consumer confidence of PC users, most console fans dont even know that department of sony.  So I think hes trying to start fresh with consoles from learning all his mistakes on PC.  I just think he means that the next mmo from SOE will be the WoW for console gamers but that is still big words.

I love my PS3, but I don't really see it as an ingredient for toppling WoW... now mabye if it was a Wii MMO it would have some quantity behind it.  I just don't think PS3 has the numbers to sustain an MMO of the required magnitude, and thats ignoring the fact that every PS3 owner would not buy the game.

Personaly I think that the quote you used has some validity to it as well as being a bit "sheltered". First I have to agree I personaly like the idea of playing MMOs on my Xbox 360, the fact is I hate upgrading my computer every year or so just to keep up with the new stuff, I'm a gamer that sticks to a few staples and jumps around sampling the compotition from time to time.

Now the important thing is that consoles are vastly differnt from PCs, its just the way it is. So obviously MMOs will take a new form when they make the full jump over. Also I will point out that gaming started on PCs and evolved into the console (or mutated which ever way you wana see it). MMOs will follow the same path but I don't think you'll see MMOs take off untill they are readapted to the console player mindest.

As for taking down WoW, some advice to anyone who wants to do that. Make a GOOD game, and constantly add to it once you've nailed down your player base with honest to goodness fun gameplay you can take on anything. WoW was nothing new it just did everything right (for the most part I know some people would disagree with me, the point is though they are still number 1).

LOL!! Smedley cant even make EQ2 a good game, how does he expect to topple Warcrack? I mean its not like WoW is so much better than EQ2 (they are both about the same). The guy just needs to take a step back into reality, try reading the EQ2 forums... make it a better game the WoW, and maybe he will not come off sounding like a delusional nimrod...

Considering a console life expectancy is about 5-10 years...and that a MMO made by Smed take 5 years to developp...

I would say that consoles indeed have some nice future in MMOs, but not with slow working devs.  You can't release a MMO on a 5 year old console and expect a massive success when most users are thinking about the next console already.

Look I would Love to see a MMO topple WoW for nothing else to just see it happen. Unfortunately that title will never have a Sony stamp on it.

Fortunate for Smedster, he hasn't screwed over the console users yet... So for a lil while, he would be actually having some success... Since console users don't listen to us "ancient PC users" anyway...

But the day will come when console users will scream "SCREWED!! UP YOURS SOE!!".... That day, we can just tell em.. "what did we say? SOE is not someone you want to do business with or give your money to".

LOL the PS3 topples itself, how the hell it is it expected to improve anything? Thats putting aside the fact that MMOs on a console still remain a terrible idea.

I want to see WoW toppled now! why? not because I dislike WoW, and I love Blizzard! I want to see wow toppled, because that would mean there is a good game out.

To see Wow toppled three years from now, well that just means people are bored with Wow, not because the new game is good.

As far as Smedly? Well, I have been saying console MMO's, especially casul play specific MMO's on consoles would be a huge seller... For the PS3 exclusive? slit your own wrist as you sell to a whopping 17% of console users. Make a multi platform Xbox360/PS3/PC you will have a winner <maybe AoC if they pull it off well.

An MMO on the Wii, maybe a phantasy star series? but while the graphics in a game mean little to me over game play, the Wii's graphical ability is very weak, can you imagoine trying that video card trying to draw a hundred charachters in a zone for an MMO?

Smed, SOE, and Sony have proven too many times that they are Ass Hats.  MMOs are driven by the PC market and the console market demographic is a very different mind set that would not, in majority of cases, be interested in MMOs.  Sorry if I am offending some one and I call them like I see them.

MMOs, to be successful, IMO, need to have some level of difficulty that the average console player would not be interested in.  If anyone want to be successfull at porting MMOs to the console then they have to do so without making the game to dumb that PC users will not be intersted.

Smed, SOE and Sony are not capable of that, IMO.

Also,  before trying to do this, there needs to be a console confitguration that can co-exist within a PC box.  Like an adapter card and a software application and standalone consoles capable of having a keybaord..  First one to do this will have what is needed to bring PC users and console players into the same virtual realm.

Until then it is a pipe dream and the fact that Smed is the one spouting should be enough of a clue that it is currently not well thought out.

For those that love Keyboard and Mouse, Unreal Tournemant for the PS3 can be played with a Keyboard and Mouse.

So an MMO on the PS3 isn't far fetched but making an MMO that will topple WoW, I think that's not something that will happen anytime soon. I think the only way for WoW to collapse is Time and Blizzard screwing up their player base ala SOE.

The PS3 doesent have enough ram to run a good mmo. Heck I cant even play TF2 without it lagging (have no problem with lag on my 360 or my PC). How do they expect to handle 60 plus people  on screen at the same time when 16 lags to hell?? Heck I have huge doubts the 360 could handle it and it has twice the ram.  Casual MMO's on consoles are not a bad Idea, but with the current systems that are out  I dont see it working well at all. Mabye the next round of consoles but not this one.

i wouldnt mind playing a mmo on my ps3, fast memory, every cross over game plays better on my ps3 and it never freezes or fails to read the disk, AND you dont have to pay both the mmo company AND microsoft to play. PS3 allows free online play which beats out both of the other consoles

Heh, gotta love the spin on this blog

Smedley didn't say he was going to topple WOW, he stated that he thinks console MMO's can be as popular as WOW

The REAL quote from the article:

On whether we'll see an MMO on consoles to rival the success of WoW:

"I absolutely do [think we'll see that], and in fact I think by having a stable platform where every customer has an online capable box is a huge, huge potential advantage in building an MMO because you've already got an online userbase. It's a massive advantage over the PC and we don't have to worry about graphics cards or things like that. It's going to be very big. If you're gonna smear then its usually not wiseto link to the article you are misquoting. i know the unabashed hate for him is strong with some on this site, but bash him for what he actually said, not made up spin.
