EVE's monthly banter - Women, women, women

The Original topic: http://www.crazykinux.com/

For this month we have:

What could CCP Games do to attract and maintain a higher percentage of women to the game. Will Incarna do the trick? Can anything else be done in the mean time? Can we the players do our part to share the game we love with our counterparts, with our sisters or daughters, with the Ladies in our lives? What could be added to the game to make it more attractive to them? Should anything be changed? Is the game at fault, or its player base to blame?

In my humblest of opinion, I like it the way it is. Adding contents just to appeal to one specific demographic might just turn off the others.

That said, the best way to attract more female gamers is to implement the "walk in stations" that was promised last year. Having actual avatars means they can be dressed up. New commodities like clothing/fashion and cosmetic options will hopefully appeal to the ladies. Adding the option to customize the paintjob on ships might work also help...

Yeah, I know I'm being sexist... girls like pretty things etc. The median age of EVE players is 25ish (oh yeah made up stats :P), and cosmetic changes aren't likely to make much difference. Back to my humblest of opinions, I like the game for its hardcore, no-frills attitude. I usually compare it to the frontiers of the Wild West, and it is no place for the meek. Butch Cassidy and the Sun Dance Kid weren't women.

That said, I still don't see why real life gender plays a role in MMO's. Sure the player sitting behind that screen might be really kind or attractive, but online, they are another person completely. Heck, some guys just prefer to play as female avatars (me included). Now, maybe being a female might influence a person's play style; I don't know.

To change the game in a way that would appeal to more females means making the game less hardcore, less ruthless. In agreement with a lot of the comments to crazykinux's post, don't change the game to appeal to women.

My wife is completely baffled at why I enjoy Eve. She will spend hours upon hours on Lord of the Rings but the whole concept of just being in a spaceship with no results in her never even giving it a shot. The gameplay of Eve would never suit her anyways but at least with walking in stations she might of given a trial a go. My mother in law plays alot of WoW and she says exactly the same thing. I enjoy playing games online with my wife but I have just finally given up on trying to convince her.
