Okay, in case you haven’t already figured it out, I am old, both in game and in rl.  I have played horizons under an, I admit, outdated sense of gameplay.  This particular set of quests has proven that beyond requirements to me.  Things have changed in my home while I wasn’t paying attention, things for the better!

But anyway, enough old person whining.  Let’s talk about the last 2(?) adventure quests on the evil island, and I will explain more on the way.  Also, the istaria wikia reference is out of date, due to some of those aforementioned changes I wasn’t paying attention to.  I will, of course, point out these divergences as they happen.

Head once more toward the dragon adventurer’s cave and greet avariatus.   The trainer offers you the opportunity to learn about the two factions among dragonkind, lunus and helian, by undertaking a brief quest for both.  I chose to start with the lunus faction quest, but it doesn’t matter which one you do first, as we both will find out!!  As your quest journal will advise, but contrary to the wiki instructions, you need to run up the road outside the trainers’ caves to the middle of town, where (assuming you haven’t already visited it for binding purposes) you will find the shrine.  The wiki instructions advise you to go to the dralk shrine – obviously part of the changes.  I don’t know when they made this change; I remember mw having to go to dralk years ago.  I approve of this change, dralk is a very dangerous place for hatchies, even close to town.  You will find out more when I start the trainer tour with mw (reminder – only a couple more posts to go to tell me if you want me to do more beginner quests rather than start the trainer tour!).  your chat log and quest journal will tell you to mediate at the shrine for 5 minutes – yes, that is real time minutes!  Time for a potty break!

After mediation, your quest log and journal advise you to return to avariatus and share your insights on the lunus way of life.  The adventurer wants you to bring him a new scale, so that it can be enchanted for you.  However, unlike before, the trainer does not give you the formula.  You must acquire it on your own.

You should (and can) get this form from the crafter trainer.  However, when I tried to trade with kerian for it, I was unable to bring up the trade screen.  Therefore, I decided to head back to town and try the consigner.  You can find both the connie and the pawn broker under the tent in the intersection between the roads to the resource fields and the monster areas.  Right click on Milicent and choose trade.  The trade screens will come up, with the search screen on top (I actually bought the form earlier and then came back to do a test trade when I realized I forgot to do it the first time.  sorry.).  click the browse items button and scroll thru the items until you find the item you are looking for.  The icon buttons on the top are for looking for specific types of things, like forms or weapons or food, etc.  once you find what you are looking for, highlight it and drag it to the items receiving field on the right.  The items giving field should update to show the coins you are trading for the items.  Click the approve button to complete the trade.

Now, open the form (after you scribe it, of course!) and see what requirements you need to make the desired scale.  Collect the resources, access the scaleforege ability while at the forge, open your forms, and make the scale.

every year, as with most media, the gods of istaria have a year end message that reviews all the past year's awesomeness.

this year's review was released this morning, so i present it to you!

 

Greetings from Istaria,

I hope this letter finds you snuggled up by a warm fire with your favorite drink in hand, whether it be a mug of klava, mulled wine, or a cup of steaming hot chocolate. For those in a more southern climate, we hope you enjoy your beaches and picnics in the sun. We’ll be thinking of you as we shovel out from the latest winter storm!

As 2012 draws to a close, I’d like to take a moment of your time to look back at some of the many changes that the Virtirum team has brought to those who play Istaria. The year kicked off for us in April with an update that focused on a major overhaul of the Lesser Aradoth region. Lesser Aradoth is one of the first areas players encounter in Istaria and so our goal was to immerse players into the storyline of the game right from the start. We added many new quests to the area, but also revamped the layout of many of the monsters on the island to provide a more logical progression from Kion south to Sslanis. In the process, we also extended the level range of the island from a maximum of 20 to around level 25, so that there is some overlap with the Dalimond Peninsula. This is intended to make leveling a character easier by offering a variety of quests for multiple levels, as well as group sizes. In addition to Lesser Aradoth, we revamped many other areas of the world, such as Trandalar and Scorpion Island, to make content in those areas more readily accessible to players. The spring content release also saw an update to many of the player communities that had been previously untouched in earlier revamps. These areas now have larger plots and easier access. Oh, and lest I forget, we also introduced hats to Istaria! Sold by Sheila Jones in Bristugo, hats are meant to be worn to social occasions such as the festivals that our players are holding to celebrate the season even now. In the Summer Content Update, we focused almost exclusively on bug fixes and improvements to the Master-level Crafting system. While much of what was done involved numerous quest-related fixes, we also reworked the Burning Archer quest series to make it more player-friendly and to make it more widely available to players outside of the Elemental Archer school. In addition, we continued to work on expanding and fixing plots with the goal of ensuring that all plots will be at least 60x60 (most are considerably larger), and that the terrain beneath all plots are completely flat to reduce difficulties some players encountered while attempting to build on their newly expanded plots. We wrapped up the updates for the year with the release of our Fall Content Update that included many more bug fixes, but also new content. The long-awaited introduction of Dragon Broken Items to the loot tables for many mobs across Istaria was part of this. These items can be collected, traded and combined to craft dragon scales for players of all levels. They are designed to not replace regular crafted scales, but to be an alternative way for adventurers to gather components needed while they are out hunting. In addition, we made building a plot even easier and more straight forward with the introduction of new standard sizes for houses. Crafting material requirements, as well as experience given for building houses, were all standardized into basic categories ranging from a small house requiring just T1 materials, up to the most complex guild house available that requires a bit of everything in game. This is intended to make leveling a construction-based school a bit easier and to allow a more linear learning curve as players advance in level. Beyond the standardization of houses, we also updated the Design Preview window so that all items on a plot or in a lair will spin similar to items in the Item Preview window. Though this might seem like a rather minor update on the surface, it is one that has been long requested by players and will help them when designing their overall plot or lair. That’s not all that’s new on the technical end of the Istaria spectrum. Earlier this year the game’s client was updated to allow Object Fading. Many of our players had commented on how structures and objects “pop” into the scene and this kept them from extending their view distance in graphic options. Now, with the new object fading system, structures fade into the scene at distance, allowing players to extend their view without experiencing popping. This system also lets objects load and unload from the game’s client in a gradual manner, which not only improves performance, but gives a more realistic appearance to the world.

New slash commands were also introduced this past year, including “/lasttarget”, which allows players to select the last entity targeted (resource node, machine, structure, monster, npc, etc), and “/cyclenearestcorpse”, (or /cnc) which cycles through nearby corpses to loot them. When macroed, these commands greatly simplify targeting objects in the game. 

For a long time Istaria has had plain, circular shadows known as Blob Shadows. The latest game client introduced real shadows for the player, with the option to enable them for all world objects as well. This makes a huge difference in the game’s appearance, and with computers as powerful as they are today, it’s a minimal load for great visual effect. Along with these updated, and numerous other improvements to the client, most players report having a much more stable gaming experience while they play Istaria. The technical team will continue to gather feedback on these changes as well as other fixes and improvements regarding the game client’s stability.

In other exciting news, we have a new launcher for the game and have phased out the use of the website for starting Istaria. The latest download includes a Java-based launcher that allows players to fully manage the characters and view services on their account. With this new “Launcher 2”, players can easily see what version of the game they are running, control whether to patch or not, produce support logs, submit system specs for support, and link to any of our websites through the launcher. 

We also brought two seasonal events back to Istaria this year; Pax Istaria in the summer and the Fall Festival in November. We’re looking forward to bringing back Gnomekindle in early 2013 to celebrate the season of gifts and giving with all of Istaria.

Gnomekindle is not all we have planned for 2013! This next year is looking to be one of the best ever for Istaria. We’ll start off the year with the introduction of Crystalshaper, a new crafting school for Dragons. This school is being designed to fill a niche that has long been empty, that of craftable crystals. It builds on much of what we’ve learned from other school revamps and while we say it will be primarily for Dragons, the products players make from it as well as the capability to contribute resources to it will be available for everyone. Our hope is that this will foster an even greater sense of cooperation between players of various levels, as well as provide dragons with a craftable, re-usable item that they can sell in the open marketplace. Once Crystalshaper is released in early 2013, the team hopes to continue building the storyline of Istaria by focusing on the next big content project; the revamp of the Barasavian Desert and the region around Tazoon. This region is considered to be Tier 3 (levels 40 to 60) and so most of the content will focus on players in those ranges, but as usual there will be plenty for everyone to do. There’s even plans in the works to introduce new monsters to the area, a race never-before-seen in Istaria, that should add quite a bit of excitement to the revamp. Be warned! The war against the Withered Aegis will be “heating up” as the temperatures warm this spring.

The coming year will also see the introduction of a new seasonal event in Istaria with a “spring” theme. The as yet named spring event will be located on one of the Resort Islands, like the other seasonal events, and will include new quests and artwork players can use to customize their appearance, as well as their plot. This will “round-out” the seasonal events in Istaria, with a new one coming in each quarter of the year, and we hope this will inspire players to add their own events to celebrate the seasons each year.

your last dragon crafting quest, for now

Well, the time has come for your last crafting quest on new trimus.  It’s been a fun and interesting learning experience, but you are a big hatchie now, and it is almost time to go out on your own.  The last thing kerian has to show you is how to technique a spell, a useful skill to know.  By now, all the steps should be familiar to you.

First step, of course, is to speak to kerian.  The dragon crafter will tell you what needs to be done.  As you can see, kerian has left the basic stuff (dim ess orbs and sandstone spell shards, which if you are smart, are already made and waiting for you in your vault) to you to complete as you will, but nevertheless, this is a triggered quest at first.  Which means, of course, that you have to make sure you hit all the trigger points before your kills will count.

According to your quest journal, you must first locate the blighted area you have already visited when you hunted the saris ghosts on an earlier quest.  Remember, the maggots are nasty, so when you get to the blighted area, keep running along the right side of the valley and try to avoid getting smacked.  Resist the temptation to step off the cliffs onto the beach and follow the path (as indicated on the map) – that is where the trigger point is and you need to see it before continuing on to the sand pygs.  Choose your targets wisely, the pygs pack a lot of hurt into a small package.  Do not forget to loot at least one pyg ear – you need it for the tech part of the quest.  Your quest journal advises you to return to kerian and tell the dragon crafter of your mighty deeds.  She will praise you and give you gifts, that you might accomplish the next step.

Make sure you scribe both the spell and the technique before you head to the scholar’s desk, assuming that you have the required materials.  As kerian tells you, true grit is a buff spell that gives you bonuses on your armor and health points, and the fortify tech provides a chance for added bonus to armor as well.  Step a couple steps to your right (assuming you are facing kerian at the moment, and that you remembered to retrieve/make the basic resources) and access the scholar’s desk to make the teched spell.  Call up your true grit formula and make sure to add the technique before you attempt to make the spell itself.  You will notice that kerian gave you a resource not yet available to you – a bronze golem fragment.  In future, you will have to hunt for or buy this and other tech resources.  Once you have all the resources required, make the spell as you would make any other spell or item.

Once you have the teched spell made, but before you scribe it, make sure you follow your quest journal’s instruction and speak to kerian one last time.  After receiving your congratulations, be sure you scribe the completed spell and add it to your spell hotkey bar.  It will be useful to you once you start battling creatures in the wide world.

And that is finally it for the beginner dragon crafting quests.  There is one final quest that avariatus will send you on, then you will have completed all the dragon specific quests on the training island.  After that, I will either continue on with the dragon trainers using mourningwood on blight, or if there is interest, I will continue on with the non-specific quests on new trismus – the gifted quest, and other quests available to all races.  It is up to you guys to let me know which you have more interest in reading about!  Let me know what you think, and I will do as you will after the last dragon quest.

Well, the dragon crafter has sent you to avariatus.  The adventure trainer greets you and advises on where to find the needed ghosts to collect the vapor required.  This is a trigger quest, so make sure you follow the quest journal directions!

New trismus is a small island, so you are not gonna wonder into unfamiliar territory finding the blighted area.  Head past the gruoks and grass beets, to where the spiders are.  The familiar fallen log is there, and your game chat log should let you know you triggered that part of the quest, and your journal should update as well.  Head past the turnoff to the haunted camp, and continue down the road toward the higher level gruoks.  Thru the canyon on the left side of the road, you will begin to see the blighted area – black, scorched earth; black, twisted trees; dead white giant maggots.  Watch out for the maggots: they are tough, and at best will slow you down terribly; at worst, you will need a partner to help you wade thru them (they respawn real fast).  They are slow, so just try to avoid their personal space and head for the ruins behind and to the left of their playground.  Anyway, head into the blighted area, and your game log and quest journal will update.

As I said, try to avoid the maggots in a left hand direction, and you will soon find yourself in the midst of the ruins of a saris settlement.  My advice is to head for the small hillock you should see nearby and use ranged spells to draw one or two of the ghosts to you at a time.  They are tougher than you might think, and death is very inconvenient – not that you will get death points at this time, but having to run back and thru the maggots to get your vapors is a pain in the tushie.  You will prolly have to kill more than just 5 ghosts to get the needed vapors, and they do agro (most things do with ranged spells, of course), so hack away to your heart’s content until your log and journal update to return to the dragon adventurer.

Being a great believer in positive reinforcement, avariatus congratulates you and gives you a gift – a stone of vitality.  It is an item of the type known as crystals (altho some are cogs, or gears, or stones, etc. – they all function as beneficial items that go into a socket on a piece or armor, a weapon, or tool).  Once you have the stone, you need to socket it for it to be any use (altho you can also ‘eat’ crystals, draggy slang for adding them to your hoard.  This is usually only done with biped xtals, such as those for tools and weapons).  In order to do this, you need to unequip the scale, if you have it equipped.  Right click the scale and choose ‘configure crystal’.  You will open up a window with the appropriate number of socket slots (only one at this point, of course).  Grab the xstal and drag it to the slot, then drop it in.  now, equipped your new and improved scale, and head back to kerian for your next task!
