I have been an avid MMOer since '98. Pretty much have played every major MMO title that has come out. Some I enjoyed...others not so much. Ultima Online was by far my favorite. I have been popping in there every now and again to see how things are. N lately found it...well not the same game I once loved.
Normally over the past ten plus years of gaming, I have always had a sub to one game or another. Ya know start a new one n cancell the old. Now for the first time...I cancelled my UO account (yet again) and have not nor do I intend to subscribe to any of the current MMO list. Even looking towards the next year in releases...I doubt I will be subscribing to any of the MMO list.
Hopefully the future will bring out something that grabs my attention n is able to hold me for a few years, rather than a few months. UO kept me goin for 6 years straight, n SWG held me for about a year or so. Most others, only a few months.
Not saying that the current crop of MMOs are bad...but they just all feel the same. All about leveling, getting that uber gear. And many are suffering from large worlds n low population scattered about.
So now I find myself looking forward to single player RPGs. Playing 'The Witcher', 'Mount & Blade', 'NWN 2', 'GTA4', and other such titles. Hopefully 2010 will be a year I can look forward to again with MMOs. But the kick in the pants AoC did, I am pretty much staying away from MMO releases, n anything that does catch my fancy will wait till a few months into the game.
But for now...wonder what I can do with that whopping $15.00/month I will be saving...

I know how you feel. I have been subscriptionless for almost 4 months now. I to the point now that I have any interest at all in a new MMORPG...especially with all the WoW-clones being released these days.

Sun Jan 25 2009 10:51PMNWN 2 hell yeah! I played the original on AOL hehe. The games that came out this past couple of years aren't really bad, but as you said, they're just bland, repetative, and same-old same-old.
Sun Jan 25 2009 11:35PMFed up with the slash & hack or elf type mmos?
Give Pirates of the Burning Sea a free 14- trial.
It's not as bad as some people are claiming, IT has some great ship combat & an in-depth ecomomy.
Mon Jan 26 2009 1:46AMI play free ones mostly now. I still go back to CoH from time to time (on account of it having such a rock-ass character creation that going back always ends up being worth at LEAST one month of playtime), but otherwise I figure that, if pay-to-play MMO's are going to continue this almost stagnate trend of completely avoiding advancement, then I can enjoy the same style of gameplay without paying a dime.
Besides, I like to think that its my own way of sending this genre a message. "Stop wasting time copying the tired EQ formula or I'll waste my time for free, rather than pay you anything"
I suppose, though, this message could be miscontrued as, " Free-to-play is the bestest system evarz!1!!!11!"....which is so far from the truth it hurts. Deep.
Mon Jan 26 2009 2:18AMbuy quake live and stop crying.
Mon Jan 26 2009 3:41AMI am in the same boat, I do hit coh every few months for maybe two or three weeks then stop. i just finshed trying out Runes of magic and did manage to hit 23/20 before getting bored with it. I really hope something neat comes along this next year.
Mon Jan 26 2009 4:44AMYeah I was like you until I started playing WAR. I'll admit it's not the greatest game, but on the other hand it isn't as bad as most of the recent mmo batch. I played SWG as well, so I know how you feel when you can't find that same spark in another game, and end up mmo hunting...
I played Mount and Blade religously for a month or so, but it gets really old quickly. Even though the combat system is pretty innovative, it draws a monotonous tone onto the game after a while. So, I suggest that you do not play it too quickly or download a MOD, but even then you will probably harbor the same feelings when you search for the idealistic MOD...
Mon Jan 26 2009 6:55AMHave you tried Ryzom?
Currently it is still free I think, but you will soon have to pay again, it will be 7,95€
Mon Jan 26 2009 7:53PMI've been playing Warhammer since beta (Jan'08) and I'm ready to pack it in. Lots of interesting things going on but end game is repetitive. Getting there is fun though. I don't want to level up 8 alts as it will make the "getting there" just as dull as end game. But I find most end games dull. Raiding every night in the same instant dungeons without the excitement of the old EQ trains through Lower Guk is very tame.
So after I pack it in within the next week or two I'll be doing the same as you, sitting back and reading forums to see what the next great is going to be and realizing I probably will be dropping online gaming as a option all together.
Wish someone would come up with the most amazing sci-fi! It was always my first love followed by fantasy.
