Is PC gaming dead?

As every month goes by I check for new PC games to be excited about. Lets just see how this year panned out.

Age of Conan -

  Pushed back. Sad day...

Warhammer -

  Pushed back. Sad day..

Spore -

   Pushed back. ....

Hellgate London -

So not what I expected it to be. Its an ok game. I got a good month of playtime out of it before I became bored.

Soldier of Fortune Payback -

Lets start with , I love SOF2 mp real damage infiltration. Wtf happened to this game. Everyone involved in its creation should be fired on the spot. No questions asked. Simply fired. I guess I can understand what they were thinking. Lets take all the key elements out of the game, no leaning, no chatting, no guid for tracking purposes, and drop all the fun too. Im at a total loss.

Tabula Rasa -

I see what this game could have been. In my opinion they should have never released this game as is. They should have taken the time to fully develop the game. I wouldnt have released this game without adding another playable race that hate the bane as well as  humans. I would have added a PvP planet where humans, the bane, and the other playable race all vie for planet dominance. This PvP planet would be all out war. This PvP planet should allow for player built structures (bases). This could add an entire new dynamic to the game. I'm not saying its a bad game. I am just saying that I believe it is by no means a game that is ready for release.

LOTR -

I have no idea why people play this game. The classes seem dull. The environments seem dull. The mobs seem dull. I would have thought one game with "please kill < insert number> of boars" quests would be enough.

Team Fortress -

I got a solid couple of months out of this game. It was pretty fun. It was probably the only polished game ive played this year. I prefer more realistic FPS, so obviously it isnt going to hold my attention for long.

World of Warcraft -

Lets add in another expansion pack. I pass. Id prefer that they refine the PvP system. Id prefer they take more time to balance the classes. Id prefer they would adjust class/race abilities that are so weak that they are useless. Id prefer they make world PvP fun again. Instead, lets just add more PvE content. Blah...

This sums my year in PC gaming. Pretty much a disappointing year for me. There isnt an mmorpg that can keep my attention, well, besides logging into guild wars for a bit and hitting RA. I tried hitting shadow bane up and sadly its as close to what I want as any MMORPG out. It has plenty of classes and races. I love the loreplay server that actually puts restrictions on what races and classes can be in the same guild.

Oh well, I guess im done with MMO's for the time being. Hell for that matter PC gaming. I guess I still have SOF2 and Guild wars to toy around with until something new is released that actually entertains me.

** Just so its known, I do not play console games.

Agreed, To be honest there hasnt been a game that could hold my interest since Star Wars Galaxies (before the retarded the game for 12 year olds).

Seems like no company wants to come out with an original idea, interface, and sotry idea. Seems like every game that comes out is a WoW clone.

Been at a loss for finding anything half way entertaining. I have gone back to half-life mods like natural selection for a little alien carnage.

I had a decent go at SWG. It was a good attempt at something new. I bounced right after they shat all over it. Oh I also forgot...

Vanguard -

How could I forget vanguard. This game disappointed the hell out of me. I do not believe I have had a game perform so poorly well, except Dark Messiah...

Dark Messiah -

This game made me want to bang my head against the wall. Good concept. Horribly glitchy...

no its not dead. its focused on repeating whats been done but "better." creative and fun things will come again, everything just takes time. "pc gaming" is barley 30 years old. long ways to go

there is already a trend of focusing on making fun/finished games with the delaying of war/AOC. its not sad at all that they were delayed. making the game fun should be their priority, and was one of the reasons given in an interview that AOC was delayed.

gg double post me.

The pushing back of games is a good thing. It means that the developers have learned that releasing a game early like they did for Vanguard will kill it. They now understand that their games need to be polished on release.

Indeed, this is why LOTRO has done so well. Say what you like about it, but it is a polished game.

agreed.. to much focus on PVE in MMOs, When MMOs should be about playing with or against other REAL players. I can play singleplayer RPG and kill AI without having to pay 15$ a month.

very dissapointing year.

You are conflicted in your analysis. You say that so many of these games are pushed back, and then you complain that Tabula Rasa wasn't pushed back. I believe that these companies have finally realized that players wont put up with games released too early and with too many flaws. There are really shitty games out there; you have made that point too. The truth is that there are even more shitty games for console. We are merely in a lull, because the developers all realized at about the same time that pushing back games was good. Eventually the equilibrium will be restored.

On a sadder note, fuck you EA, for releasing your next Battlefield game on console. What a fucking stupid move.

I dont believe that I am conflicted in my analysis. I say that many of these games are pushed back and it made me sad. This doesnt mean that I dont believe they shouldnt be pushed back. I just wanted something new to play. All I said was " sad day.. ". Dont read more into it than whats written.

I disagree with most of what you said tho. Mythic and Funcom have realized that releasing a polished game is important. These are two companies out of how many? SOF payback was released in a sad condition. UT3 wasnt polished. Hell UT3 has some of the same bugs that the demo did. Hellgate London wasnt near finished. I believe the desire to release something and make money then fix it will be here for a long while, because, well, people will still buy the games. We wont blackball companies like SOE that release games like Vanguard early. Should we blackball them for it, hell yea. SOE should suffer for ruining what could have possibly been a great game. Will they suffer, no.

Eraser -

I agree entirely with your statement. If I wanted to kill mobs id play oblivion. Hell, the reason I dont play oblivion is because it seems pointless to me. It has no real challenge.

I want an interactive MMORPG that pits players vs players, player coop, as well as mobs + players vs mobs + players. Sadly it seems every game giant wants player vs player or players vs mob. Hell, if it were me id even code PvE with some PvP content. Imagine a raid where two groups of players are racing to the end of it alone diferent paths, once they get to the last guy they are forced to fight each other, the winning group gets to finish the instance. That could pretty cool.

Terminus/project8six -

I dont know about you guys but I dont see 2 companies pushing their games back as being a trend. Im glad they did it, but I dont really see other companies doing it. The reason is, why should they. There will be no punishment for releasing a broken game. Should there be a punishment, hell yea...

Although you throw in a few non-MMO's most of your examples are, in fact, MMORPG's. There is a destinct difference between the rest of the PC gaming industry. This year was a great year for PC gameing and another so-so year for MMO's. It wasn't as bad as 2006 but the quality produced games we did get were not very interesting or compelling.

PC Gaming is a long way from "dead", its had a record year so far this year and its looking like it will get better. To bad MMO makers can't get out of their rut.

The list of exceptional PC games is pretty long this year...Comp of Heroes OF, Crysis, Bioshock, CoD4, The Witcher, Gothic3, World in Conflict, Gears of War (PC), HL2 - OB, Enemy Territory - QW and many more plus a bunch of very good expansions like the NWN2 and a few others. 2008 should be even better....lets hope MMO's just don't serve up more of the same as 2003 / 04/ 05 / 06 / 07....

I just listed the games that interested me. For me personally there wasnt much to enjoy about this year in Video games. Spore was the only single player game that interested me this gear. I think Im pretty much finished with single player rpgs and such. They do nothing for me now a days.  I find no real challenge to them and the story lines are usually pretty bland. I would rather just watch a movie. It seems with pretty much ever genre its nothing but regurgitated 80's and 90's games with shiny new graphics. Sadly, with sof payback, they should have just cloned sof2 mp and added shiny new graphics, heh...

Agreed. But PC gaming is not dead. Online gaming especially not. Even in consoles there is now online gaming (Xbox Live) because people outside MMOs now realize taht one player adventures that can be beaten in a day or so aren't going to cut it. PC gaming, not at its highest, but Online Gaming, at its highest.
