So, the TV remake of "V" debuted last night on ABC. For those who do not know, this is a remake of a cheesy sci-fi mini-series where the "V" (Visitors) arrive Independence Day style over every major city in the World. Instead of shooting, they turn their ships into giant jumbotrons, reportedly only moderately smaller than the one in the new Cowboys stadium, and deliver a message of peace from their leader Anna (the prostitute from Firefly).
Naturally, there's more to it than that, but I'll save the general plot points for your DVRs. Let's just say, they likely are not quite as nice as they appear.
So, at the risk of jumping the gun in a new an exciting way (and that's why this is in the blog), did anyone else watch this and get an itchy trigger finger to jump into this world? Could we have a more perfect contemporary setting for an MMO?
Of course, the show's ratings are not even in yet, so it has to be a huge success before anyone would consider it, but of all the TV shows out there I watch, this one seems the most natural to let people run around in it.
The game seems to have three well defined factions, enough science-fiction fun to expand into, as well as a good excuse to build some elements of the real world, but in a fantastic way.
So, here's to "V" becoming a big enough hit that someone goes and buys the rights!
Warning to comment readers: I tried not to deliver any major spoilers, but I make no promises for people in the comment thread.

I was a huge fan of the original and enjoyed this new version as per an mmo based on it, I would definately be interested in it and there is plenty more to the story after the mini series that could be used later in the game's life cycle for expansions and such. Here's hoping that this version is as big a hit as the original and gets the chance to be made into what could be a great mmorpg.
Wed Nov 04 2009 10:35AMI was a fan of the original series as a kid. Sci-fi airs a marathon periodically. Will probably catch the new series On Demand. I can't for the life of me think of how it could be turned into a MMO.
Wed Nov 04 2009 11:09AMIt's been awhile since I seen the original series so correct me if I'm wrong, but it seemed like last nights show condensed the whole or most of the old series into it with a few twists?
Wed Nov 04 2009 11:11AMEdit it above: Which gives the new series the ability to now branch off into their own story.
Wed Nov 04 2009 11:13AMI watched it last night and it is typical of todays generation of wanting everything fast and now.I did not like it so far,it may get better as it continues, but it lacked the suspense of the original.I thought the motherships of the original looked better as well.As of right now I would think this series will not make it past a season 1 if not being canceled midway thru.As for a game it would make a terrific storyline and world to dive into.
Wed Nov 04 2009 11:49AMthe new show certainly looked good - they didn't stint on the cash for the CGI
acting was horrid though
Wed Nov 04 2009 11:55AMI'm still waiting on Babylon 5.Why limit it to 3 groups when B 5 had dozens. It's Halloween/Thanksgiving-I want to be a Markab!
Wed Nov 04 2009 12:20PMJust a side note... Ratings are in and V is a hit so far...

Not a bad start!
Wed Nov 04 2009 12:25PMthe show was great, although the kids fat friend who kept saying "i know right" and "dude" made me want to jump in the tv and beat him with a chair
Wed Nov 04 2009 12:40PMHmmm, chairs as weapons....I like the premise already
A Sci-Fi MMO set in the near future or present day with invading aliens masquerading as benevolent travellers with the added functionality of bar-room brawling with destructible scenery & furniture that can be used as weaponry....
Sold.
Wed Nov 04 2009 1:32PM"The "V" (Visitors) arrive Independance Day style." Just to be anal, the Independance Day aliens arrived 80's "V" style. Or Childhood's End style, if you really want to get down.
Good first episode, but I think a Firefly/Serenity MMO would play much better.
Wed Nov 04 2009 1:33PMI loved the original "V" back in the 80's I watched the new show last night and thought it was pretty good.
I would love to see a sci fi MMO with space travel as a possiblity be it V or as another poster suggested even in the Serenity world. (Loved that show and the movie.)
Note: Someone will undoubtedly tell me that there are arleady Space Travel MMos and I realize that but they are just not to my liking. I love the Serentiy world and it would be fun to play in as would the V world.
Wed Nov 04 2009 1:37PMtman5: I know, they also made a joke about it in the episode. Nonetheless, it conveys the point, but I was having a personal bet to see how long it would be till someone pointed that out ;)
Wed Nov 04 2009 2:31PMCommon the remake is abysmal souless crap! why waste time on turning this dross into an mmo when there are some awsome unspoken for i.p's out there? (Babylon 5/Firefly)
Wed Nov 04 2009 2:47PMI personally wouldn't want to see V or Babylon 5 or Firefly made into a MMO at this current stage of MMO development. The model on which the majority of development houses make games these days is not one I find enjoyable.
Once developers start getting back to making "worlds" again, full of depth in many spheres instead of just combat and "quests", then sure, I'd love to see all of them done.
Wed Nov 04 2009 4:30PMi take the cheesy one before the new one any day..
Wed Nov 04 2009 5:03PMAnd I'll take the new one before anything else they are showing on "evening tv" these days, heh. I loved the old one, don't get me wrong, but I don't think the new one is competing with it. It is competing with all of the other crap on tv today, though.
Wed Nov 04 2009 5:22PMCheesy sci-fi mini series. I don't know what series you was watching Dana, but the V series I watched kicked ass. I just saw it on TV the other day and it is still great even today.
Wed Nov 04 2009 5:32PMI liked the show, whether MMO worthy or not, it would have to compete with Anarchy Online with it's new engine in the works.
Wed Nov 04 2009 6:00PMThe 80s V wasnt cheesy in its day. It was expensive and used all the special effects available in its day. But notice i didnt mention how good or bad it was. I liked it as a kid, but ... oh well I loved the Six Million Dollar Man back in the day as well
Wed Nov 04 2009 8:22PMi miss buck ridgers to back in the day that was good...
Thu Nov 05 2009 12:32AMI watched the new show too. I thought it was good for a remake. I've only seen a handful of episodes of the original but so far like that better. I definitely plan on giving the new series a chance and hope it succeeds. I think it would be a great setting for a MMO. I imagine Pre-CU SWG or Fallen Earth as a template. Lots of possiblities.
Thu Nov 05 2009 1:11AMV was the show of its day!!!!! I loved V!!
Thu Nov 05 2009 1:40AMAnna (the Companion from Firefly/Serenity) would have a much better way to address her character!
Thu Nov 05 2009 5:53AMYou must of been born in the 80's or you like melrose place LOL
Thu Nov 05 2009 8:01AMif they start production on the MMO it might be ready by the time they cancel the show.
Thu Nov 05 2009 9:58AMI loved the original V mini-series and short lived series. I have no desire to watch a bastardized new version of it.
Thu Nov 05 2009 7:55PM"i miss buck ridgers to back in the day that was good..."
Is "buck ridgers" the porn offspin of Buck Rodgers? Was it good?! :)
Loved me some Twiggy (the little robot). "Beedeebeedee Bee".
Fri Nov 06 2009 11:07AMI'm curious what show does this one sorta take after?
I was a huge fan of firefly and battlestar galactica, but usually I do not buy into sci fi channel shows often. I did manage to watch 14 seasons of stargate but that was more out of bordom than interest. :-)
