EA & Blizzard Makes MMOGers cry... in the same week!

Posted by phosphoros Friday March 28 2008 at 8:11AM

So the big news for me this week was the delay of Warhammer Online and the announcement of the Collectors edition.

Also of note was the 2.4 patch for WoW.

The Warhammer delay really sucked for me I have to say.  It was one of those things you figure will happen but you hope it doesn’t.  I guess I’ll just have to find something else to do with my summer now.

Mark Jacobs has been a damage control machine from hell too.  After hours and hours on the WHA forums he was out there yesterday doing freaking interviews trying to quell the growing sound of Mmogers crying like little girls (and me adding my crying to the chorus).  I know a lot of people hate EA Mythic and/or Mark Jacobs but damn that guys like a force of nature when it comes to him getting the word out about…well, anything!  Between him, Paul Barnett and “The” Hickman consider WAR totally marketingly (Yes, I made that word up, no you can’t use it in scrabble, yes it is quite cool isn’t it?) sexed up.

What’s so utterly funny about it all is everyone and their dog knew it was gonna happen but we just had no clue as to when it would happen.  Then you get all the Mmog sites asking the same 5 questions that Mark can’t answer, or that he already answered on the WHA forums and was probably re-linked ad nauseam to every forum in the free world and a few pay-to-live-free countries.

Just amuses me I guess.  Most people get their news about stuff from only one or two sources so it’s best to get it out to as many sites as possible.  I’m pretty happy overall that the delay will mean put simply, a better game for everyone.  Yes it sucks fuzzy muppet nuts but I’m sure we’ll all be laughing about this next year (unless there’s another delay… *twitch*) over a glass of mulled wine and a plate of deep fried High Elf Ears.

Blizzard seems to have its hand over the kill switch doesn’t it?  2.4 is an utter disaster of epic proportions to which only a Vanguard like launch can compare.

What?  They gave you content?  Fixed bugs and junk? Revamped the craptastic combat log?  Oh I see how that fails now.  Dumbass's

Granted the Doomed trailer park of Sunwell thingy seems as interesting as a long walk off a short pier with Rosie O’Donnell. I’m sure the achievers will want to get on that right away though.  It’s sort of zero sum in my mind though making content as you go for the high ups who rape it in a week then wait another two months for more.  All the while Blizzard keeps having to make harder and more ridiculous encounters to keep up with Major E-peen and his implants but 10 bajillion sheeple can’t be wrong can they!?

Half the people love WoW and think it’s the next social networking/Mmog revolution the other half wish the other half would die in fire and take WoW with it.  Me, I’m not prejudice, I’ll happily watch everyone die in fire.

But if you read the official forums or the 15 billion other forums dedicated to WoW and/or their super guild that is the coolest, it seems the same 15 people quit. And these apparently are the same people who have quit the game since it first was released and the first major nerf.

Is there an “I quit because this sucks” site out there you can get premade forum posts on why you quit?  If not there should be.  Huge market I imagine if not just to add a little variety.

It’s pretty much a copy pasta from Furors initial EQ “I quit” knuckle dragging elitist snob douche bag rant.  Sometimes more words, sometimes less.  It’s usually the same thing though.

*Cry cry cry*  You made something different.  I worked real hard to be the first one to own the pink demon pony and now anyone with 1000000 million gold/plat/creds/chits/lindens/etc… can have one and I’m not special anymore.  People don’t inspect me anymore!  *cry cry cry* blah blah blah you get the point.

Little does anyone know but the sheer magnitude of the attunement needed to do squat in Northrend when Wrath of the Ding-a-ling comes out will be epic in it’s own right and will probably  be turned off a year or so after it’s release.  Why?  It’s to gate “achievers”.  Yes, you pompous little asslords that have to post “first” to a dev post regardless of what the Devs post was about.  You, that pile into new areas and instead of having a little fun with the community you run in with your buddies and blow the content/quests/event to hell in one fell narcissistic moment.  Then you strut around like a retarded rooster pumped up on Viagra.

So in summary…  I’m really looking forward to WAR and the delay sucks.

WoW is still having people quit 15 at a time and still has almost 10 million players worldwide.

Hmm, interesting indeed.

    • Phos,

I hate to point out that what your description of WoW or most any MMORPG is exactly what happens in social culture "In Real life". Not to take away from your point, but we all thrive on attention and being specal in some way.

Even DAoC had a high percentage of Eliteists and those devoted to being in a rare precentile of XYZ.

    • this was funny, thanks for the read

  • phosphoros- Fri Mar 28 2008 9:08AM
    • Of course we do and you rightfully point it out.  This does happen "in real life".

Mmos and online anything seem to amplify the issue though and I think it's hilarious.  Though I suppose I did pick on WoW a little to much there.  I guess with 10 million screaming "Look at me's!" it seems more pronounced. Thus my commentary towards it.

    • @Oltzu  Glad to lend some humor to your day.  :)

    • I would like to thank you for the term "asslord"

    • roflmfao.   I played Wow for about 8 months and quit cause i was getting bored with it after trying all classes/races, not to mention all their hype about WotLK and god only knows when that will come out.  Never did get past lvl 62.

    • The WoW PVP thing is a gold mine , I havent been following WoW for some time. But "unlimited gold" , "any item you can dream of" "a shot to be smacked around by others or smack around others" is like a wet dream of gil buyer.

If gold sellers are telling the truth , and 70% of WoW buys gold , wow that is a butt load of cash for Blizzard. I d love to watch how the pvp jerks handle even matches based on team work and skills vs loot.

I bet that is gonna make for some great Youtube.

      -----

Warhammer news  doesnt suprise me , every developer said that WoW was good because it was so polished and had everything decently done.

Warhammer taking time to polish thier Orcs , and dwarves , just means EA is finally ready to be an adult in MMORPG business. I mean they cant possible screw up as bad as canceling UO2 can they?

  • Player_420- Fri Mar 28 2008 11:00AM
    • I dont understand.

So Blizzard putting out a shit ton of new content all the time, and continuing to add raids that only the best of the best can do is a bad thing?

WoW has 10 million w/e people cause they earned it, and continue to put some of the most challenging raid boss fights in MMORPG history.

  • Player_420- Fri Mar 28 2008 11:02AM
    • Also WoW is trying really hard, as well as making needed game changes to stop all the gold buying. Its the players not Blizzard, and Blizzard is doing what they can.

Plus my God have you logged onto any other MMORPG besides WoW?

The gold spamming and selling in all MMOs is a major problem

    • Last comment....

As for the WAR delay, im glad!

That means I get to play beta WITHOUT you being in the game!

      buahaha

  • VideoJockey- Fri Mar 28 2008 3:32PM
    • I like 2.4 and I have yet to hear anyone express otherwise. People were chomping at the bit for new content and they got it. I've never seen so many people playing at 3pm on a Tuesday, nor have I ever seen so many people queued up for battlegrounds as I have this week.

  • Gulinias- Fri Mar 28 2008 5:02PM
    •  Wow  is a PVE care bear game at heart. I have raided end game so don't tell me i have no idea what the raids are. they are fun at first. Then not very much fun at all. That is pretty much what wow is like to me in its entirety. Fun at first followed by utter disdain eventually. Raids/ I have been there done that! PVP? I have been there and done every form of WoW pvp!  The leveling fun the first time after that  unbelievable grind! That is my opinion and for the millions that love it more power to them. I have played other mmorpgs beside WoW unlike so many of you. WoW is well done but not special in any way.

  • Napocalypse- Fri Mar 28 2008 5:04PM
    • most challenging raid content in mmo history= ROFL

please go out and play a real mmo, and stop playing WOW then you will realize it is a joke.  (not to OP but one of the comments, challenging raid content rofl...)

  • Raekon- Fri Mar 28 2008 5:05PM
    • Thanks a lot for the great read! :)

I laughed my ass off. As about Wow, what you wrote is true! I was one of the testers there and I know how it is. To those above that "Defending" WoW with wrong comments like "earned it" I can only say you obviously are one of those people that started in the mmo world through or with wow and thats why you writing such stuff. WoW for a experienced player is a crap because it was only a "Copy and Paste" from other mmos that got putted together with some original warcraft art (or should I say bitmaps when it comes to the environment with the holes in some mountains partially?) and 200k on hype advertisement towards release + another boost on hype through several magazines having them on the first page EVERY Freaking week/month only because they got payed for it. So if you mean they "earned" it having 10 mil people playing (which I highly doubt in the meantime), then you are probably right cause they PAYED for this "earning". Blizzard was a great company before but after vivendi took over and all the good developers (or at least 90% of them to be fair....) left and created other companies (guild wars and hellfire london anyone?), everything went down the toilet.

Have a great weekend everyone and thanks again for the great read! :)

    • "Dumbass's". GREAT point there Phosphoros.  Phosphoros stop generalizing WoW players.  You need to get off the internet because it is making you crazy.

  • phosphoros- Fri Mar 28 2008 8:07PM
    • You must be one of those 15 people that quit, that are still playing?

You need to get off the internet when you take an obviously sarcastic rant as some sort of slight to your "manhood".  Grow a sense of humor or go to hell.  Either way get lost.

  • TheHavok- Fri Mar 28 2008 8:18PM
    • Looks like I hit a nerve with you.

"You must be one of those 15 people that quit, that are still playing?" ...yea....whatever you say.  Slight to my manhood? what?

"Grow a sense of humor or go to hell. Either way get lost."  So if I grow a sense of humor I won't go to hell, but I still need to get lost?  Uh oh...im in trouble.

The fact of the matter is you failed and thats all im going to say about that.

  • rhturn4025- Fri Mar 28 2008 9:57PM
    • Well contrary to what "TheHavok" believes, I found this to be quite hysterical. Your usage of imagery and wording is perfect. Thanks for this read.

  • TheHavok- Sat Mar 29 2008 12:58AM
    • Okay to be fair, I did laugh at some of the comments and I think I was too harsh with Phosphoros.  For that I am sorry.  I too am looking forward to WAR and I think it is a good idea they delayed the game.  I also really enjoyed WoW , even though I no longer play the game, and feel that the people generalize the player base too often.

I also hate bad grammar, but I guess I make mistakes myself.

    •    Great Post and 'BAha-aAh!' to the sheeple.

It's curious though that folks didn't realize that Blizzard has always used their number of 'total overall accounts' from launch,  to beef-up their claims of current quarterly-annual users.

...You know, it's kind of like 'Hotel California'.- "You can check out but you can never leave."  ../wink
