I've been looking through some reviews about games and I have seen that people are classifying item malls as "bad". Now I agree with you all about how item malls are stupid and stuff, but I have foung a good side to them. You see, item malls alow the game makers to earn money which somtimes elinimates membership fees. So overall item malls are good unlees they dont elinimate membership fees.
Also people are saying that only game obssesed freaks use item malls. A bit of advice is not to say that. Because people who are reading your reviews migt get offened and stop using item malls. Which could lead to the downfall of item malls and membership fees on IGG games ect.
And to express my point some more, if games like WoW start using item malls you could say goodbye to $15 per month. I even know a person who is willing to pay $50 on stuff for WoW

I don't care for item malls nor would I want them in any game I wish to play. Ill pay to play. I don't care to have a bunch of people running around saying what ever they feel like or doing what ever they like because they don't care about the free account they have.
And personally ive tried more than my share of these types of games. Only 1 I thought was half way decent (SOTNW) , and even then it really was junk like most of the others. But its F2P so you get what you pay for.
Dude Item mall is great for companies to make money. but if you play a game with item mail and use it you are not very smart. You'll end up spending just as much or less for a P2P(pay to play,) F2P games are not as good as the Pay to Play over all.
So I wouldn't wait my time with an item mail game. I'll stick with my $15 USD a month for quality service, balanced game play, and over all better game.
And for your friend who breaks the EULA may he be hacked. Weak players rely on money to have an advantage over other players.
Gaming companies using item malls as their business model often overlook the fact that some (if not most) people play MMO to escape real life problems, one of them being: social status.
In real life, it's the mighty dollar that dictates the social status. You are what you wear, drive, etc.
In MMO, it's your commitment to the game that earns you your social status -- commitment to grind, commitment to raid, pvp, etc.
Keeping up with the Joneses~ same problem, different currency: if you bring an Item Mall into a game, you're giving people w/ 'higher' social status in real life an advantage over those trying to escape the problem at the first place.
I'm not saying that by not having Item Mall you can totally get rid of the problem of bringing real life social status into the game -- gold farmers will still exist. Except that in the case of Item Mall -- legalising real life advantages is not a solution. Though yes, it's easier to maintain, monitor (and perhaps easier to tax) than gold farmers.
Item malls are the best idea IF
1. Item mall items are lootable if you are killed
2. Items have a life duration
3. Items are cheap
In 10six they had random items for 2.99 and everything in the game was lootable, so even if you didnt buy them you could still aquire the items. The items also destroyed after say 5 deaths (you would have lost it by then anyways). Also since it was random you couldnt buy just 100 of 1 uber item. It was a well thought out system that sometimes made more money than subs. You pay for a slight advantage or to save time, you should not be able to pay for god mode.
