Hellgate Global is described by many uninformed sites as a first-person shooter game with RPG elements. I beg to disagree. I believe what they're talking about is Borderlands. Hellgate Global is a far different game from what they are trying to portray.Why is Hellgate Global not a first-person shooter game? Although Hellgate Global can be ticked to play in the first-person perspective, Hellgate Global lacks the general features of a first-person shooter:
- Realism - This is the umbrella feature of first-person shooters. Most, if not all, first-person shooters strive to achieve realism by imitating real-life guns and its features. Hellgate Global doesn't do this, which can be further explained by the next points, twitch, aim, reach/range, and projectile.
- Twitch Gameplay - first-person shooters rely on reaction-based gameplay. Hellgate Global, although timing is important, too, doesn't necessarily fall under the twitch mechanisms of first-person shooters.
- Aim - first-person shooters also rely on aim. While trying to shoot a target, you have to consider its aim. Every gun has a different aim, and the precision of your bullets will be determined by this. Factors such as crouching, running, crawling, or walking also have an impact to a player's aim. On the other hand, Hellgate Global doesn't have true aim. What it does have is a targeting mechanism. Wherever your character is facing, as long as it is "aimed" at your target master, you will be able to damage it at the same degree at any form of aiming.
- Reach/Range - first-person shooters also rely on reach or range. Bullets fired from guns cannot continue to follow their direction in perpetuity. They have a limit. Some guns are only effective at a certain range only; for example, a shotgun is very effective at close range, but if your target moves away from you, your shotgun will be no better than a simple pistol because of the difference between you and your target's range. Hellgate Global, on the other hand, do not have a range that affects the accuracy or damage of guns. They have specific ranges from which guns and swords can be activated to damage your target.
- Projectile - Hugely related to both aim and reach, projectile is the main path the bullet takes on which it moves and subsequently hits its target. Because of aim and reach, bullets follow different projectiles. This doesn't happen in Hellgate Global. Once a target is within a gun's reach/range, the bullet hits it directly.
Hellgate Global is not a first-person shooter game. Hellgate Global is an ARPG. What is an ARPG? According to Wikipedia:
To be more specific about it, aside from not being a first-person shooter, Hellgate Global's immediate predecessors all came from the point-and-click ARPGs. Examples of games from the point-and-click are:
- Diablo 2
- Diablo 3
- Torchlight 2
- Titan Quest
- Path of Exile
Hellgate Global is a little deviation from the list since it doesn't use a point and click system. Aside from the movement and targeting controls though, Hellgate Global has the same core gameplay mechanics as the games previously mentioned. Notable features of these kinds of games are:
- Random Loot
- Random Options
- Graded Loot
- Graded Mobs
- Random Map
- Definitive Story/Story Arcs
More than just being a simple MMO, or a misinterpreted first-person shooter game, Hellgate Global, at its core, is a solid ARPG. It has all the fun and excitement any ARPG game can offer, but is presented in a modern way, that is, in first-person perspective, to help players get immersed in the wonderful world of Hellgate Global.
