How to become a great guild leader

Posted by kairi_sweet Thursday March 27 2008 at 2:03AM

Not all are born leaders

In an online game, they are basically called the guild leader/master. These people are the ones who qualify themselves to create their own guild. The basic requirement for this role is that you should have the resources, decent level and respectable items. Anyone qualified for this is now set for building their own guild.

But as I quoted above, not all are born leaders. From the moment you press those create a guild button, you are putting yourself to a deep responsibility. Forming the best guild requires your full dedication, responsibility and time.

So, if you are wondering how you can be a good leader, here are some tips that you can do:

1.       Understand your role You should understand that a Guild Leader is basically, the leader. Keep in mind that being a guild leader is like a leader in real life wherein you must lead your members for the better. Guild leaders are the core of the guild, never forget that

2.       Have a goal Since you have already created your guild, the next thing you should do is to have a goal for your guild. You must ask yourself why you created this guild in the first place. Is it for fun? Is it for PVP purpose? To be called the best? For tournaments? Whatever your goals are, make sure you and your members remember it well. You must make sure that every member shares the same goal as you. Otherwise, it will lead to an ugly disbandment of guild

3.       Create your rules Well, just like in real life, Guild leaders should enforce your own set of guild rules. Without these rules, guilds will be in turmoil. Create a set of rules that everyone must follow. In accordance to this rule, you should also be clear and firm in giving sanctions to those who violated the guild rules. You dont want your guild to be painted with criticism right? Remember, an organized guild can win against numerous guilds in chaos.

4.       Attendance Since you are the guild leader, you are required to be always there for the guild. You cant make excuses like I need to sleep cause I still got exams tomorrow or I fell asleep. Since you are their leader, you should be the most active fellow in the guild. Im not telling you to forget your real life, but it is really the prerequisite of being a GL. You can appoint sub Guild Leaders to have someone in second command. But be sure these sub Guild Leaders are as competent as you are.

5.       Understand the game A guild leader is expected to have the best knowledge of the game. You are required to understand the game well upon becoming a guild leader. Expect numerous PMs from players or members since they look up to you as their leader. Either play the game more or read more stuffs in the net to understand your game. Its all up to you

6.       Lead by example It is the duty of the guild leader to lead a good example to his members. If you dont want your members to be late for wars, or any guild program, better be earlier than your members. You shouldnt tolerate illegal things such as third party programs that will destroy the game you love. Remember, what you are in the game reflects on who you are in real life

7.       Treat Everyone fairly for guild leaders, this will be the toughest thing to do. You cant just show your favoritism to a certain player because it will stir a lot of problems for your guild. People will see it if they see that you are just giving items to a certain player. That will be the biggest problem. Learn to see all your members equally, and for sure you will be loved by your members.

There, hope some aspiring guild leaders here learned a thing or two in this article

    • TO be honest i did not read all of this blog but only the beginning was required to shock me i have been playing a number of online games e.g. World of Warcraft (WOW), Flyff, 2Moons, 9Dragons and others and i think items are not important in my opinion all it requires to be a good guild master is good overall knowledge of the game, determination, people skills, a good level charactor, be willing to help others in the guild and be organised as in big games the guild starts of small then builds up and you end up like in WOW doin raids as a big team and instances :]

    • Thats just pure logic stated there, though I also do not agree that you need good items to become a good leader or a leader at all. 7fireeye7 summed it up quite good.

Well maybe in those games items are not that important but if you take a game such as Lineage 2 where it takes a lot efford of the entire clan to make the best equipment avaible in the game (assuming you don't ebay etc..) In that case if you put one person infront of a another for what ever reason then you will have trouble.

it should be clear when joining a clan what members  can expect from it in terms of getting equipment for example you may choose to equip the highest level players first (which is probably the best option in my opinion) especially because you can use the old gear of those players to equip the lower level players etc. We did that in l2 we had someones S grade armor or weapon crafted his A grade goes to the next person in line that can use it.

    • So a guild leader has to be a total loser in real life? Like the guy in south park who killed everyone in WoW lol.

    • I dunno.  It depends of your goals and objectives.

I merely create 1 guild once, and there where a total of 3 players and about 20 characters in guild.  I was totally satisfied with this experience and would redo it anytime.

There isn't 1 blind truth.  My guild was in coalition with cool guilds.  The guildtag was relatively easy to recognize and peoples would generally react accordingly.  Half of my characters where in coalitionned guilds, and some I refret deeply, some I was happy to join other guilds.

Overall, I was pleased and obtain the goals and purposes I was wanting.  Again, I would redo it, if I am uncertain of which guild to join, I know what to expect from me, and my decisions/lack of decisions.

    • These are just tips for ideal guild leader guys :). Yeah, I agree items are not important, but it is one of the things that people look up to. Having decent items like good set of armors will earn you respect from your members. Of course, there are lots of other factors and people think differently, but we can't deny the fact that it is one of the factor that will surely make or break a guild. Other factors will come in once you established that respect from your members.

      @tkreep

Well, Im not sayin you should be a total loser IRL, but be sure to be ready when that time comes :P. There are a lot of good leaders that are "winners" IRL too. It all depends on your time management

    • Just watch out.. having good equipment is important for a clan leader but don't f*ck over your clan members for it.

Also I somewhat discovered I'm good at managing large amount of people trough being a clan leader and I had a opertunity in real life which turned out exceptionelly well and now i manage a large number of people for a large company with a nice boost in pay to boot =)

Not sure if I would have dared to take on the job if I hadn't had any experience managing people trough being a clan leader.
