Out with the Old, in with the New

I've been an MMO player since UO came out. I've pretty much tried everything that is worth a try as far as MMOs go and I have to say the Old Gen MMOs are just plain boring except 1 or 2. And I am calling every current MMO "Old Gen". Every single one feels outdated in many ways (not just their graphics). Can we gamers just let these "Old Gen" games die so we can focus on the new ones? They have become so bland and fruitless that there is no skill involved. I played WoW for almost 2 years... became the strongest pvper/warlock on the server and sold him. Came back to WoW a few months later, became the strongest pvp Shaman... then sold again and I will NEVER go back. I'm currently at CoX but even it is plagued with the "Old Gen" blues. I'm ready for skill to enter the MMO scene. The death of Auto Attack needs to come ( doesnt mean 'heat seeking' spells wont exist). The death of stupid-mindless grinding needs to come... its only a poor way to keep customers busy. MMOs might be in "persistant" worlds but the fact is these worlds are very boring that leave your character with little feeling of doing something epic or world changing. Even though WoW has made the MMO scene bigger, in a way it also extremely dumbed the scene down.

I am going into Interactive Game Design and I do take notes any experience I have in an MMO. These are just some of my notes...

    • Sound more like a rant about the gameplays than about the old gen vs new gen.

Auto-attack behold to a gameplay which is bound to be more about thinking/relaxing than about fast action l33t reflexs.  Every attempts to replace auto-attacks have been mitigated at best.  Peoples are not playing MMOs for l33t reflex skill action of doom.  They play for an interactive laid-back experience.

Laid-back gameplays are not going to disappear because you want them to, they are why we play theses games.  I have a lot of fun in CoX, but ultimately the pace was too fast for me...

Someone playing a game for hundred of hours...seriously, most of these players want to RELAX, and auto-attack allows just that.  :)

The lack of grind is ultimately the reason I quit CoX.  Sure they add a few, but in the process they remove soo much.  Why do you think peoples love the leveling system?  They certainly don't hate grinding, otherwise they wouldn't level up.

    • how is there not room for    both    auto-attack and more interactive?

    • Actually, I think what he has to say has merit. Just because a combat system is real-time, doesn't mean that it's going to require twitch on the level of Don Pachi. Let's just say that my motor skills didn't get that much of a workout with Fable or Jade Empire.

Likewise, I don't think that something needs to be real-time just to be engaging. Valkrie Profile had a pseudo-turn based system that kept you engaged in what you were doing in every encounter. Ditto for FFVI.

The whole problem is the concept of auto-attacking itself. This one time, in Asheron's Call, I attacked this really big monster after I was really buff and I had time  to go take a leak and fix a sandwich before the fight was over. Really... It was that interactive....

I understand that RPGs are all about the character's abilities and progression, but I'd really like to have more input into what's happening on the screen. Combat shouldn't be something that you can just wait through.

    • Interesting, a kindred spirit. I'm with ya I'd like to see more interactive combat whether it be something like Jade Empire, Mass Effect, FPS, ES: Oblivion, etc. Or I'd play something a bit more tactical or turn based. Just something different is a good start

Something more realtime would be excellent

    • Though old-gen is, well, getting old there are real gems in the business that I still find fun. And, just an observation, you talk about playing PvP a lot in games and wanting skill to enter the scene. I don't mean this to insult you but maybe MMos aren't your genre, FPS are all about PvP and the closest to skill you'll get to in any type of game.

    • My idea of skill is not the ability to aim your mouse at a target, but how wisely you use the situation and tools provided to secure your desire result.  People in most MMOs, IMHO, should not necessarily be rewarded simply because they can more accurately click the mouse or press their tab key more rapidly.  I agree with the guy above me.  Your idea of "skill" seems to stem from FPS oriented gameplay, and is an inaccurate representation of skill in most RPGs.  I would like to keep your error as it is, inapplicable to MMORPGs.
