Greetings Disciples

While I am not a professional writer, the task of writing the lore for Disciple fell upon me. Luckily I am obsessed with world history as well as popular fantasy writers such as J.R. Tolkien and George R.R. Martin. I am one of the nerdy types that loves to pass my time by not just reading, but studying texts such as “The Silmarillion” or the “Oxford’s companion to Mythology”.

When I set out to create the lore for Disciple, I referenced many historical and mythological texts as a source for inspiration. As an example, the Volkerians are based on Germanic tribes, the Haltians are based on the Celts, while the Ashasians are based on the Persians all from approximately 500 B.C..

Often times gamers skip through and ignore the lore that is created to give context to a game, and with good reason. Why should you sit through and read a small book when you really just want to get straight into the action. For those of you that are simply to impatient to read the lore-book, I would like to offer a summarization of the world and lore of the game “Disciple”.

Essentially the God of this universe is named “Yeiwaz”. He has a few offspring: Nyx and Dai. Obviously these two offspring are representative of day and night, or more plainly, good and evil. The two offspring are always fighting with one another, and as a result of their constant opposition, the world of man is made.

Once the world is made, Yeiwaz has more offspring that are tasked with shepherding the new world. They are named Yoden, Ouramazd, and Artaius. Nyx of course becomes jealous and tries to kill them, and the three children with Dai’s help trap Nyx in a chasm of fire. Yeiwaz is upset and releases Nyx with a rebuke, and confines the three new gods to the heavens below Yeiwaz but above the world. Then Yeiwaz leaves the realm and all his children forever.

At this point they decide to name the world “Aphelion” because it is far from the light of Yeiwaz. Each god created a separate race of man akin to their own characteristic.

Yoden, strongest of the three, created the Volkerians, a hearty race that preferred the northern lands where it was cold and hard. These men were hearty, and grand in stature with light skin and more hair than the others.

Ouramazd, swiftest of the three, made the Ashasians. A nimble race that preferred the warmth of the east with their swifter bodies and dark skin. The beauty of the south filled their spirits, as this was most important to the anxious race.

Artaius, the most intelligent, made the Haltians. These men were of balanced proportion and were keen of the green fields in the west of Aphelion.
The men of the world quickly became jealous of the power the other gods had bestowed their children and created polytheistic religions in order to gain the power of all the Gods instead of just their own. The three Gods became fearful that the men would become too powerful so they vowed to one another that any man may learn the power of any God, but only one.

This results in ages of war between the men of the world. The civil wars are finally laid to rest, but I will cover that story next week.

I hope this is a helpful summary for the first half of the Disciple lore, we will finish it next week.
