Catalin over at geeky gadgets has a brief article up concerning CU and where it goes from here.

Mythic Entertainment founder Mark Jacobs of Warhammer Online and Dark Age of Camelot fame has seen his Kickstarter for Camelot Unchained has confidently skipped past its $2 million finish line. Camelot Unchained, a three-way realm war take on the MMO will now be entering testing by January and aims to ship in December 2015.

“Up to now I have shown you that we can ‘talk the talk’, while Andrew has proven that he can ‘walk the walk’, but again, this is only the beginning. If the Kickstarter process is like a roller-coaster ride, then what’s coming next is the greatest thrill ride of all time. We won’t let you down,” read the team’s victory post.

CSE recently added the stretch goals to the kickstarter they just successfully funded.

For those of you new to kickstarter many publishers once they meet the original goal decide what extra benefits to give their backers for additional funds.

These stretch goals for CU are:

$2,100,000------->Archers and one new race per realm.

$2,250,000------->CU Version of Herald/Armory.

$2,500,000------->The Depths and one new race per realm.

For those of you not familiar with what the Herald is Dark Age of Camelot many years ago put up a stats page for players with all sorts of neat info. Here is a link on the waybackmachine that shows the herald from 2002 DAOC.

Update #44 · May 2, 2013

Folks,

Our 30-day journey has ended but our real journey has just begun. It has been an exhilarating roller-coaster ride that has seen us weather the power of the ServerStorms, illness and injury in the studio and the usual trial and tribulations of our first Kickstarter campaign. We have all made many new friends along the way and while we will take leave of you tomorrow, the parting will be very brief. When we return after some much needed R&R, we will be back hard at work with one of our first goals to get the Backer Forums up and running.

Sometime after the Kickstarter closes we will prepare a survey for each of you. We will ask you some questions that we need you to answer carefully (like your email address for example) so we can ensure that you will be able to join all of us in the forums. So, frankly don’t take too long or we will be deprived of each other’s idears! :-)

The creation of Camelot Unchained is our goal but along the way we will all share in a great adventure. As our backers, you will be part of a creation process unlike any other MMORPG’s creation to date. Up to now I have shown you that we can “talk the talk” while Andrew has proven that he can “walk the walk” but again, this is only the beginning. If the Kickstarter process is like a roller-coaster ride, then what’s coming next is the greatest thrill ride of all time. Scary, yes but in the end we will come through safely and we can say that we did it together. And we would rather have you guys along for the ride than anyone else we know! From all of us at CSE you have our most humble thanks and deepest appreciation. We won’t let you down.

-Mark Jacobs & Andrew Meggs

How Camelot Unchained Can Change the Pay to Play MMORPG Industry

Some folks have a way with words. I myself unfortunately am still learning to put my thoughts on paper.

Guiseppe over at dualshockers.com has wrote a wonderful article on how Camelot Unchained can change the industry.

"As I start writing this piece, the Kickstarter project for Camelot Unchained is in its home stretch, with just a handful of hours  to complete its funding and speed towards its first stretch goals. With an average pledge per backer of about $160, it’s obvious that many of its supporters really want it to happen. The counter now reads $1,854,237 in pledges. I will continue writing as it grows, and by the look of things the project might very well overtake my writing and beat me to the goal, funding well before I’ll be done.

While Camelot Unchained‘s community is very passionate and proud, there’s something that even many of those supporting the game by paying for it more than two years before its planned release date may not have realized yet.

Camelot Unchained is so unique because instead of trying to please all MMORPG gamers in one fell stroke, it radically caters to an arguably niche fanbase of PvP-oriented players while basically showing the finger to everyone else. I’m quite sure most big publishers would consider this course of action absolutely crazy.

But it could work."

Camelot Unchained and CSE Just Made History

Just a few minutes ago a small gaming company called City State Entertainment made history by raising 2 million dollars to create a realm vs realm game, old school style.

While the company maybe new, one of the founders of CSE, has been around gaming since MMO's came about.

Mark Jacobs created some of the first online games even before Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online.

It has been a wonderful ride this last month and now the work begins for the backers as well as CSE.

Looking forward to what CSE and all it's backers will create in the next 2 years.

Join us for this adventure.:)

Camelot Unchained Update #42 The Last 24 hours!

Mark just released update 42 which will include some new Kickstarter tiers.

42 Update Video

Folks,

The clock is really ticking now! We’ve got 24 hours to go and we’re still $152,000 away from our goal. While that may seem like a lot, it is less than 10% of our original ask and that percentage has been raised by all of the most successful game-based Kickstarters during their last 24 hours. If you know someone is still sitting on that fence, see if you can convince them that this side is so much more fun! Let them know that they can join us as we work together to create the next great RvR MMORPG.

At approximately 2PM EDT I will open up some new tiers based on backer demand (can I have my ducks back now???). :) These tiers are:

1) Living Large 2 - 25 new homes total, 40 extra FPs and to be fair to our LL backers, the tier will be priced at $1200

2) Proposed Lighthouse Tier

$3500 - Along the StormWatch– DIGITAL ONLY ============================== With this tier PLEDGE OWNER ONLY receives HOME WITH A VIEW rewards and THESE UPGRADES: a SMALL REALM-LOCKED PLOT in ONE REALM’S STORMWATCH (name subject to change) areas, your HWAV HOUSE will be upgraded to a lighthouse-like structure, and a TOTAL OF 500 FOUNDER’S POINTS. To ensure consistency with the game’s lore, no other structure can be built on your plot but the plot and the LIGHTHOUSE will be designed with the help of CSE to add walls and other protective features. This plot and lighthouse will be SUBJECT TO ATTACK/DESTRUCTION but it will be rebuilt by the REALM at NO COST to the player. The LIGHOUSE CANNOT BE BLUEPRINTED. Your plot will remain your property as long as the game is operating, even if the account goes inactive. While we guarantee that you’ll have a plot somewhere in your server of choice (based on when you backed this game), not all plots are created equal. Backers will be contacted based on when they pledged for Camelot Unchained and gave us their contact information. Additionally, this tier will come with an additional HERO FOREVER PLEDGE TIER because the STORMWATCH is a lonely job. This tier will not be available after release. Estimated delivery of Internal Testing Access: January 2014.

I will also open a copy of the DragonWhale tier.

Next up will be an updated chart and explanation of the FE/FP process.

Yesterday’s loss of time and momentum due to Amazon’s over 4 hour outage hurt us but we still have enough time to make this happen with your support. We hope that in less than 24 hours, together we will truly begin an epic journey!

P.S. Enjoy a piece of concept art from our wounded (wrist) concept artist duckling Sandra!

Camelot Unchained Update #41 A Home Run!

Mark posted update 41 last night really late and to say the least CSE had an interesting day with Amazon going flaky with all kickstarter payments.

Watch update video over here:  Update 41

Folks,

It's been an interesting day. From PA to KS to Amazon, it's been quite a ride. Let's have a recap of today's events:

First, Penny Arcade Report's Ben Kuchera had some unkind things to say about some of our loyal, but slightly overzealous folks. After some apologies from me (on behalf of them) and others (including our members and I respect that), things settled down after he followed up the Twitter comments with an article about them and CU. My opinion on this hasn't changed; I respect the right of any journalist/writer to cover what they want and when they want to. It's their call. I do also respect the right of individuals/companies to ask for coverage but not to the point of going overboard. The passion and enthusiasm of our fans is admirable and heartwarming but it did apparently cross the line. For that, I again offer my apologies. I am also overwhelmed by the dedication and effort made by some fans to help get our Kickstarter additional attention and for that they do have my thanks and gratitude.

Second, Amazon Payments' server farm that Kickstarter relies on decided to, like my MacBook yesterday, lose its mind. During one of our busiest times and best runs of this campaign, the vast majority of backers weren't able to pledge for our, or any other, game on Kickstarter. While they finally did come back online, it did set our campaign back a bit. I've been in touch with both Kickstarter and Amazon (as I suspect every other KS did) and we'll see if this leads anywhere. While we will make it, the loss of those four hours and possible additional momentum (we had a promotion with XFire kicking off at the same time) hurts a bit, especially with the KS stretch goals.

All that being said, the day ended well as our pledge totals starting rising again.

Finally, it's fun time. In the video you'll see the first of our concepts and models for both an Arthurian bard-like character and well, something completely different. I hope you enjoy both!

Tomorrow will be a great day because I know that is the day that Camelot Unchained will truly begin its rise to glory.

-Mark
