East vs. West on MMMORPGs

There are a lot of cultural and game-play difference between Eastern and Western MMORPGs. World of Warcraft, the planet’s biggest MMORPG, is the West’s crowning glory and is the epitome of all things “western”, i.e. subscription, gameplay, style and theme. For us Asians, we embrace the F2P (free-to-play) business model, Item Mall and (to some extent) grinding.

Join me as I examine the many difference between Eastern and Western preference(s) in online gaming…

In the end, Cash shops drain your money faster than Subscription. All depends if you want to be "ownage" fast (Buy best items from item shop/EXP potions, spending $200 Dollars that week) or take more of your life away (Farming hard to get those epics for weeks and weeks) for instant pleasure, East. For more longativity, West.

I see that you are taking the high road on f2p...join me and read my blog on cookie cutter mmo's bro.  Cause Sanders hit the nail on the head.

Just the term "free to play" makes me laugh so hard I want to cry.  Yes it's free to play.  Free if you don't want to stand a chance against a cash shop whore and free if you want to grind your ass off to level just in the hopes of getting decent enuff to pvp for ten minutes after fifty hours of grinding...and that's only if the people you want to take on aren't botting 24/7.  And f2p games are botted so heavily it's not even funny cause the companies that produce f2p games will not ban them cause they also tend to be cash shop whores.  IMHO

I must agree with the other two posters, F2P games are as cookie-cutter as one can possibly get, the controls are usually fairly annoying with little to no option to change them around...the story, if there even is one, is usually shallow and lacks any real pull.

More times than not when you start up on one of these F2P games you're wading through a sea of AFK players with banners a mile long saying "buy blah,blah,blah,blah"...that's always would run into this on games like FF Online as well (minus annoying banners) but as least they did it properly.

In closing, F2P games forceably squeeze small amounts of money out of their players...not so said player can have an advantage, but so they can just stay on-par with the rest....if this is how you want to play your MMO's, fine....but not me, thanks.

Buried because this is basically an advertisement for your site.

Also, kinda pointless article since almost anyone who visits this site regularly already knows what you're telling.

Funny thing is WOW draws more subs in the east (Korea, China, Japan) and because of it eastern game Dev's are changing the way they are making games. They have to because the eastern gamer does not want a item mall/grinder/cookie-cutter games anymore. Expect those types of games will fade away in the coming years.

I still want to see an example of 1 F2P item mall game that "knocks the socks" off of even a moderately successful Western MMO.

OOOH!  Bots and point and click....where do I sign up /sarcasm.

Its funny how some people want to differentiate the culture when a western mmorpg is dominating the eastern culture as well.  Poor game design is poor game design no matter what side of the ocean it comes from.

F2P is not free.  To play on an even field players spend more money on them then any subscription game.  In game support is almost nonexistent and even the forums for the western side is moderated by players.

Point and click movement is so old, you would think the dev's would get it by now!

As far as Eastern and Western preferences and go, WoW is right down the middle. I'm talking about subscription numbers. I don't know the figures exactly, but back when WoW hit 10 million subscribers, 5 million of those subscribers were in Asia.

You might argue that the gameplay and style reflect western culture more than eastern, and F2P games are more popular in Asia tha in western culture, but maybe WoW is not the best example to use here.
