6 Things MMOs Owe to D&D

The passing of Gary Gygax, co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons is a true loss not just to the pen-and-paper or traditional RPG industry but to the entire gaming community.

There is much that we owe D&D - part largely to Gary’s ideas and imagination. From the rudimentary rules of miniatures war gaming, Gary culled the rules for the first D&D system. He, together with Dave Arneson, opened the universe to gaming. Imagine what fantasy gaming, video games and MMORPGs would be like without D&D and without Gary’s legacy?

What a bland landscape that would be. There wouldn’t be any Lynx, no Cloud or Final Fantasy and certainly WoW would never have been conceived.

MMORPGs would not even exist.

Someone might come up with some sort of massively multiplayer shooter or something, but it would bear no resemblance to what we have now.

Very true Hexx

I'll take it further.  RPG's, as a whole, would not exist.  CCG's, like magic and Yu-gi-oh, would not either.  All of those use systems incorporated from the base concepts laid down by D&D.

Even more, a vast sea of fantasy authors and books would also cease to be.  Even larger seas of music and sound would die as well....each being spurred to life by the many RPG teams that have existed.  Gygax did not give life to a genre...but also to the many things that genre touched as well.

MMORPG's and all RPG's as we know them would not exist if it had not been for the creation of the game by Gary Gygax.   Think about all the wonderful books and movies that would not exist.  Games like Fianl Fantasy or EverQuest would have never been.   This whole genre owes Gary Gygax a thanks of gratitude for starting the ball rolling and opening our eyes, minds and hearts to this gaming genre we call roleplaying.
