The reason to hold a public beta is to bombard the game with many people with the intention that the more people playing the more bugs will be found, as well as giving a chance to test server stability with high load.
Sadly, at least to me, the mystery and build up to a game is removed when the internet is suddenly showered with review and pictures of people that are on the beta, you suddenly know a lot about the game and have nothing left to discover for yourself. You could choose to ignore the information, but curiosity is a powerful thing to overcome.
I think the game companies should stop holding public betas, and hold closed betas with a select few people close to the company with experience in game testing. Nowadays its a choice to either participate in beta and do everything again a second time, or to not play on the beta and be at a disadvantage to the players that did.
It is believed that Blizzards new MMO is currently in a friends and family closed beta.
Can't wait till the Guild Wars 2 events system. Also check out my thief profession guide.

Well one thing is read about other person exp, but be u playing that game, killing that mob and getting that weapon have no price, so public beta r a good idea,

"Beta testing" , as it were, is less about "bug huntung", it seems, than "interest generation" prior to a full release. Especially, when a game has been "closed beta" for 6 or so months, then anyone/everyone is offered "beta keys" for "open beta". Betas have become part and parcel of the marketing mechanisim, it seems to me.
