Blizzard can spend as long as they like producing a game. Other game producers need to follow a tight schedule.
It is irrelevant just how much experience a developer has, there is simply no better way to prove something works than to test and try it in game. It is by no means a fast way to develop, but if something is to be the way you want, then trying and testing is the best way.
There is the stuff to do on the most basic level e.g. simple geometry. However for some things like character design and landscape, you simply must look at them within the game, no simulation or preview from an editor will do. The faster you get testing the better.
Blizzard puts the large amounts of money they make back into the games that made the money rather than making loads of little games with the hope that one catches on. Because of this Blizzard games, although unoriginal, are of a very high quality. 5 reasons to get excited about Blizzards Next-Gen MMO.
Soon to come, is Blizzards next-gen MMO. I for one can't wait to see what they have in store, it will hopefully be announced at Blizzcon 2010.
