part #1: background.
I like gaming. it's a part of me. I enjoyed computer games for years now (not too many, but enough), and I'll probably continue doing so as it offers me much more than the sheer enjoyment of the game itself - an escape. an escape that does not hurt me (too much) like drugs or alcohol, and it even helped during the years I suffered from extreme anxiety.
when I first found out about MMORGPs I was thrilled with the idea. prior to my first experience with MMOs I played various games which I enjoyed, but not nearly enough as I did when I started playing Neocron.
Neocron was the first game I truly was a part of. single player games offered me nothing close to being a part of a living, breathing virtual world with players from around the world. I was amazed.
of course, like most MMO fans, I was a part of the game before it was released. before I even beta-tested it. and it took only a few lines of info and few screenshots to lure me into that amazing world. I was hooked. I literally stalked that game.
when the open-beta was available, I jumped right in, only to find out my amazement being turned into pure addiction. It was--nearly--everything I wanted in a game.
the game was released. I bought it and subscribed. I was in love. I even skipped school and stayed home only to play a few hours more. but in the end... I left. the game had too many problems that surpassed the joy it gave me. bugs made the game unplayable certain times, while the low population made me think I was alone. there were some class imbalance issues, but that never bothered me. I did NOT play to win - I played to enjoy being a part of this world. hell, I even had a "one-man-clan" and I did suicide missions against big and powerful ones. it was fun even though I got obliterated in seconds.
I wanted more.
so, I tried different MMOs. Anarchy Online (got to level 156~; had many alts), Planetside (trial - wanted to subscribe, but gave up on that idea eventually), World of Warcraft (since release until TBC with quite a few breaks).
although I enjoyed playing these games, none of them offered me what I wanted. Neocron was the closest one, but it also was not even close.
well, this is the end of the first part. in the next one I'll write about my dream-game, which will probably remain a dream for eternity, but I don't care. dreams are my life :)
EDIT: the lack of textual design makes this text look even worse than what it is.

dude I have had the same experience with games. Neocron is such a good game but lacks population and has them awful bugs “cough run time error!!” but worst of all the developers of this game seam to be oblivious of what the game needs .
I was lucky enough to have a friend introduce me to the game and show me the ropes but if i had downloaded the game myself and tried to play it i would of left straight away there are no in game tutorials or anything at the beginning o and on about the bugs again during NC.1 it wasn’t to bad because we all knew NC.2 was coming but to every ones surprise the same bugs were in NC.2 evo witch made the release of NC.2 almost pointless.
I look forward to your next instalment of this ^^
heh, the run time errors were crazy. there were times I had like 3-5 in one hour. it was sad, because I really wanted to play that amazing game. and you're totally right about the developers, which saddens me even more to only think about it.
and honestly, NC2 was the main reason I left. I couldn't pay for another game with so many annoying bugs that should have been resolved...
anyway, it's good to hear from another person who appreciates this (horrible yet amazing) game :)
seeya around!
I'm wondering why you haven't tried Tabula Rasa? Seems like it might be up your alley. Maybe even more so if they were to improve PvP a bit.
Neocrack was so good when I first started playing it but NC2 and low populations killed it for me (oh and having 2 full apartments of researched datacubes "disappear" because of borked keys).
If they re-vamped it though balancing the classes properly, and gave it a modern skin I'd likely be right back there trying to get NCPD Precinct One off the floor again.
I must go and look for my NCPD baseball jersey now and ask the g/f if she still has the NC>SW:G thong :D
omg hehe Neocron was my first MMO...I even remember my Monk called Rorschach *sniff*
Too bad it had low pop and so many problems and also no others seems to think about a game like that : we're just surrounded with night elfs ^^
I would love to see that Huxley comes out similar...
Ahh... Neocron.... It's like a long lost lover who keeps coming back to bitch at me, so I give her a (free trial) week of loving again.

Every mmo player I know personally has always said that no other MMO is like their very first. I played Asheron's Call and was hooked into that and since leaving I have not been as content with other MMO's as I was with that game.
I have to agree with you. Like you, I too have played nearly everything under the sun and have yet to find anything that really hits it for me. I'm going to give Eve one more chance tonight. See if I can stay in it for more than 2-3 days. Here's to hoping.
If you ever do find that game, hit me up. Chances are I'm looking for it too.
Hexxeity: I thought about trying TR, until I saw my friend playing the beta. the gameplay seemed way too simple and repetitive (in a boring way, imo) and the world itself didn't really amaze me. if the game will evolve in the future, I just *might* try it. thanks for the advice though!
Sorontar: if they'll ever re-vamp NC, I'll be running back myself :) and if your gf really has that thong.. god lol, that's just awesome.
Rorschach: ooh, I'm really looking for Huxley and hoping it'll be similar as well. all these night elves sure do make me sick.
soulwynd: lol, I hear ya. reminds me of all the times I left the game only to come back a few days later.
jaxandalan: yeah, it seems so. every MMO I played was being passively compared to my first MMO.
BigDaddyTee: heh, I actually have the same problem you have with EVE. played it for 2 months (with a half a year interval between these 2 months) only to cancel my account after each month. I just can't stick to it, although I do see it as a great MMO. good luck!
and if I'll ever find that game, be sure I'll let you know :))
