over the last weeks i read a ton of ppl complaining about aoc beeing not quite finished yet others (like me) defending the game as playable and fun.

so heres my sollution:

Developers go to your marketing departement and ask them to come up with a cool name for a "almost readdy" game

i mean hey, if the guys from war would tell me to give them 30euro to play their game now even if its buggy and balanced/polished only in 3 month id get out my credit card and pay them.

maybe we should look at it like discovering your new favourite band.
you like the sound but on stage they sound rough and not every song on their album pleases your ears. still you buy it cause you want  to be the guy that sais "oh yeah i knew they rocked when they were just starting" when you go to their comercialized concert 2 years later....

from a commercial point of view the company will still get a good deal of money that helps them to bring in more content/support and sees what the players think beyond the rather positive vibes of a closed beta programm. if they are just honest about it (that the game isnt yet finished) they wont loose the hyped up people that expect perfect perfomance...

You bring up a... sort of valid suggestion.  People complain that the game isn't finished (its not), but at the same time people are impatient and want to play... now.  Many of the games I look foward to I'd gladly pay to play early.  The full price? no, its not a complete game.  But publishers want to get games out the door and start making money after the long expensive devolopment process.

Sure, I'd pay $5 a month to play WAR right now, maybe the same with the new Stargate MMO or huxley ect... however.

I wouldn't want to play knowing the servers would all be wiped before true release.  But if they didn't wipe all the servers, we would deal with the aftermath of exploits that wern't fixed before mass numbers of people got access to them.  AoC current mass bannings, the same thing happened with Lineage2 open beta... mass duping.  and while both games banned many who exploied, they missed a lot too.

So while I like your idea, Releasing unfinished games, maybe charging less than they will when they go "True live".  I also think it has problems.

So in the end I stand by my opinion that MMOs need to be released FINISHED, like games from every other industry.

Developers would straighten up and stop releasing unifinished bug-ridden unbalanced games like AoC IF players/customers would take a stand against it.

Not a bad idea.  It would certainly solve a lot of flame wars on message boards.

Publishers would be happy about box sales (usually a key factor when they force a developer to release an unready game), and developers would still be, ahem, motivated to get the thing working right.

No bug fixes = no subscription revenue.

Yes, I like it a lot.

I see both points, but i would not pay full price to see half a movie and i dont think we should be paying full price  for a game that is full of bugs and things that were promise are not in game yet. WoW was horrible at launch. i could not even log in for the first 3 days, but as i recall, we were given a week free and everytime the servers when down for more then a day they would credit us a day. i know sometimes developers must do this in order to start making some money for their investors, but not at the expense of customer. dont get me wrong i love the game, but i think i will cancel my account until the game WORKING AS INTENDED!!

the movie analogy is interesting indeed if you look at a blockbuster:

1. theres these guys that download the pre-release movie out of the net to watch some crappy quality avi with bad sound just to have the brag rights "yeah i saw it first"

2. therese the premier guys sometimes paying a bit more to see the movie. they have a bit less bragging rights but see it in a decent quality.

3. theres the regular guys going to the cinema when it pleases them just to watch the movie

4. there are the fans that wait for the hd-version on blueray or the directors cut.

while i would say that the directors cut on blue ray is probably the best experience most people do not want to wait for it.

same goes for mmo

if you look at ddo having released 7 modules so far it is a much richer and polished game then its release.still these modules got payed by people that bought the game at release and payed their subscription fee each month

the same goes for conan. part of the money that flows into aoc atm will be used to polish the game, bring more content and so on. if you dont want to be a part of the early access crew just sit back and relax and revisit it a few month down the road.
