In today's digital world, the old standard ways of commerce through product and services are dwarfed by the new king- information.
Some of this is packaged as product, or tethered to a service. Because computers are involved, the fine craftsmanship of a diningroom set, or the dedicated devotion of a hairdresser do not take up normal resources like materials or time.
But still, there is one thing that must not change- and that is control. Control of your 'intellectual property', your potential property, your percieved possible property- and of course covering one's ass.
So when people encroach on the 'digital domain', the 'Lords' of said lands make sure things go a certain way.
Whether that's right or not...
People want to have fun. They don't care about politics, problems, or 'justice'.
And businesses? Yeah- they care about you- to the degree that it's profitable/convenient. And though you have many 'rights' according to the law, and should 'ethically' be treated a certain way- in the digital world... 'it's make believe'- so it's not important. For fun's sake people will ignore their friend's problem, turn their back on 'reasonable expectations' of 'fair business' practice- instead blaming the victim saying 'they should have known better.
They should have read the Terms of Service.
So, there we have it- in the light of a higher calling, we withhold compassion from what should be serious concerns.
After all, 'fair is fair'- right?
Anyway, enjoy it while it's on the brink.
It only tips into the bowl for others.
