The Misadventures of an MMO freak/noob

The life and times of an MMO freak who can't get enough of it. I spend all day looking for the best MMO's out there, and then spend a week daydreaming of what it would be like to play that "awesome" game.

So this past week, I sat on my couch staring at the Tv watching for the most exclusive announcements from the Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. The big three. For a whole week, I had my Tv on to G4, the only channel to broadcast E3 LIVE on tv, anxious of the announcements, demos, and Steve Wiebe's world record attempt to breaking Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong record.

On the first day, Monday, Microsoft was upl first. I was excited, as I already was, about all the new announcements. I was expecting so much from them, since last years E3 they seemed to have dominated the gaming industry(at least that was what I though). First, they come out with the video of the new Beatles Rock Band, which looked really great, but I wasn't satisfied with that.

For what seemed like an hour, Microsoft announced the big games we were all  anticipating. Modern Warfare 2, Halo 3 ODST, and so much more. Modern Warfare 2 looked so amazing, I could not close my mouth. I was so excited to play this game. I mean, from the incredible graphics to the snowmobile riding, I mean, this was a perfect game!

But Microsoft didn't stop at that, they announced Project Natal. For the last year, many people were asking if the Xbox 360 would turn to motion control just like the Wii. Our questions were answered, but more than what we anticipated it to be. Project Natal turned out to be motion system, where instead of just using controllers, your whole body IS the controller! I was so excited, I thought this was the technology to take us into the future! But I was doubting it, until they showed a live demo on the stage, I could not keep myself from tearing up and laughing at the same time, This technology was amazing! Microsoft had really outdone themselves. But they didn't stop at that, they showed  a video of an Ai that you could interact with, sort of like a virtual brother or something. His name was: Milo. A girl talked to this Ai on her TV and this virtual person had human-like emotions and reactions. It's really hard for me to explain this, but Youtube has a video of this Milo character on their homepage right now.

So after that great first day, I didn't really think anyone would Microsoft's entertaining press conference. And indeed, I was right. Nintendo's press conference, no offense to anyone, was a total sleeper, especially for me. They talked, and talked, and talked, and talked. and I was literally falling asleep.Only when they announced the new Mario games and Metroid that it got me a little awake, but still the whole press conference was a sleeper.

Sony, I thought, did second to Microsoft, with their new PSP Go, and the games coming out on the PS3 this year. What I didn't see from the Microsoft  press conference was Assassin's Creed 2, the only game that I'm really excited about this year. It looked amazing on the PS3, and I could not stop daydreaming about it. But then Sony introduced a new project they've been working on: a new motion controller. Although, not fully done, this controller looked promising. In my opinion, it couldn't beat the Natal, but definitely maybe against the Wii.

The days after that, G4 showed live in-game demos of the new games coming out: Modern Warfare 2, Brutal Legend. God of War 3, Assassin's Creed 2, DJ Hero, Guitar Hero 5, and so much more that I can't even list on this blog. Overall, this year's E3 was amazing and I'm definitely excited fo the rest of the year, and Microsoft's Project Natal. I can't wait for next year's E3.

By the way, Steve Wiebe didn't beat the Donkey Kong record, but I wanted him to. Still though, he holds the Donkey Kong Jr world record, and is about to be inducted into the videogame hall fame.

The Life and Times of a "Jerk"

A lot of peple out there think of jocks as simple, single minded, little misfits, who like to crush the bones of little nerdy guys. Well, that's really stereotype, and I'm offended by whoever thinks like that.  I happen to be a jock, but I'm not sure if I'm proud to say that here in a non-jocky website. I'm kinda weird because I have this passion about gaming, especially MMOs. I love to read, preferrably fantasy books, that have a  lots of killing, and swords, and dragons, and stuff. So, I guess I can call myself a nerd, as well; if you combine the word jock and nerd, it turns into "jerk".

When I tell people that word, they ask me, "shouldn't it be "jerd" or "nock"?" I picked jerked because, it adds humor into this boring, unusual character, which is me. Probably right now, you guys are thinking, why is this self-proclaimed jock writing this boring blog? Shouldn't he be with his girlfriend, somewhere in the woods? Or be in a party, where eveyone is getting drunk, high, or knocked up? Well, as thrilling as that sounds, I'm not.

I've actually gotten invited into parties before where people actually got drunk, high, or knocked up. Only except my parents wouldn't allow me.  They wanted to keep my social status high with the preppies by playing sports(football, basketball, baseball), but also have nerdy friends. This way I wouldn't get enemies right? Well, I don't know if I have enemies or not, heck, I have no idea what goes on at school at all. I've always thought to myself that being this "jock" would get me inside the all the gossip and the hubbub, and such, but actually I feel all left out, even from the nerd group. Which led me to the MMO world.

Little emo kid finding a place home in the vast world of the great entertainment empire of MMOs. At least, that's what it feels like to me. None of my "friends", preps or not, know what I'm doing right now, that's because being home cuts me off from the rest of the world. That's why I'm a nerd, I love to be in school, because of the reason for attention, eveyone wants attention don't they?

Before I go any further, let me tell you what goes in my head, everyday:

I'm on top of the world, all the girls love me, yet I have no girlfriend. It's okay, maybe some of these girls won't wait any longer and just jump on me. Yay! That would be great. All the guys worship me because of my athleticism, and the way I made the other basketball team look bad last night. Man, you are good! Yes, you are!

I get off the bus expecting a crowd of fans just wanting my autograph. A bunch of  girls jumping on me, and guys kneeling before the great athlete. Yet none of that happens, which leads me to my emotional distress. This leads to my depression, which I hide, because people don't like to associate themselves with emos. Trust me, I've been through that a lot of times.

To tell you the truth, I've actually led my basketball team into big games and came out winning them. I'm the starting point guard, should have a lot of credit for all the victories, but have all the blame for all the losses. Oh yeah, if you think like what I just wrote, you'll be depressed for a long time. I know. So, anyways, I seek refuge somewhere where people don't care if you are a jock or a nerd. As long as you love games and have a passion with them, you'll be accepted. Plus, MMOs are the greatest escape in life. Not movies, or even books, can satisfy the beast inside a person.

What I'm saying is that in real life, jocks can almost literally tear a nerd apart. But in MMOs nerds can tear the jocks apart, and better; the nerds can do that over and over and over and over again, without getting in trouble. While the jocks get detention if they even implied about beating up that person. My ultimate point is that, flat out MMOs are greatest escape  you can have from the crazy hectic, world.
