Sunday, June 6th, 2010 saw our biggest update ever, version 1.31, go live. Considering the size of the update and the major changes that were included, the upversioning of the server and the launch of the live game went pretty smoothly. We had a hardware conflict that set us back for a bit, but by the end of the day, the server was up and huge numbers of people logged in within minutes. The battles started up instantly, amidst a chorus of "OOOHs!" and "AHHHs!" and "OMGs!. The energy and excitement were awesome, making the hours, days and months of work worth it. It never ceases to amaze me what this small team can pull off and the ridiculous amount of work they're willing to put in.
If you haven't logged into 1.31 yet, it's like a new game. The battles are epic. I've taken part in a few engagements now that have involved enormous groups of players, the likes I haven't seen since the heyday of WWIIOL . Tanks shelling the town to rubble, planes screaming across the sky riding down enemy fighters, mortars dropping on troops like rain, infantry shooting and dying by the boatload all in an effort to gain more ground. Don't even get me started about the new levels of awesome that are reached when the rain starts falling and thunder booms across the terrain.
For the last few weeks, the staff at CRS have been focused on getting 1.31 out the door. The atmosphere of "Push! Push! Push! Fix! Fix! Fix!" was thick. We still have lots to fix and are always pushing to make a better game, but now there's a new energy around the office. We can't wait to work on the next batch of goodies for you guys. Planning meetings are scheduled, and hallway chats are starting up again.
The Campaign server has been packed every day with excited players, and the love of 1.31 is flowing strong:
I shoot 2 guys WAAAAY in the distance in the church tower. I see tiny little bodies fall out the window hit the roof and slide off onto the floor. Very satisfying. -Obear71
AMAZING! AWESOME! STUPENDOUS! NEIL DIAMOND-ESQUE!!!! - jjb52
I spawned into an FB attack MS for my first go, and was in awe at the fact that it looked like we were set in a real forest. - Zeroace
The readme for 1.31 is out there - and I for one would like to take the time to say that I am flabbergasted, in awe and totally 100% psyched about 1.31 - Szyporyn
Yea 1.31 looks sexy. Thanks for putting up with our whines and not punching us in the face. You did a great job. Pretty much a brand new game...I like! - Christianr
Thanks again to all who supported us and rode our asses to keep pushing on. We're eager to get working on future features and improvements.
