Ok, look. (about WAR)

I have been waiting for this game for a very long time (ever since it was first announced) and I DID buy it launch day, not having enough time beforehand to play the beta and such. Now this is my first impression/rant on the topic of WAR, so if you don't like individual opinions on this topic, I suggest you leave promptly as to not get angry.

This game honestly feels like WoW with the pace ("gameplay speed") and graphics of LOTRO. That's what it feels like to me. I honestly feel like I'm playing some kind of WoW mod with mildly enhanced graphics every time I play the game. I've been playing for a few days (not the whole week, but at least a good deal of it) now, and it still feels like this. I've basically quit at this point, because although it is fun, I really don't want to play a game that feels like a less polished version of another game.

UI:

The UI in WAR is nearly identical to that of WoW. Even the windows look the same, but with different colors and textures. All the buttons do the same thing that the WoW ones do when you start out. In fact, the only original thing I have actually noticed in the UI is that it's customizable. I know I can change the interface and everything, but when I'm trying to get a feel for the game, I want to actally have to get a feel for the game. I want to feel like I'm learning something new and different. I don't want to repeat what I was doing on another game.

Although I will say that it's saving grace IS the customizability, and it is very nice, but it's not enough to make me feel good about this part of the game.

GRAPHICS:

The graphics in WAR are somewhat disiappointing. The greenskins have some nice models and shading, I can't really say much for it other than that. It looks to me like a grittier and darker version of LOTRO; but the grittiness is taking away from the game and making it bland with greys browns and very dark greens. I like war-strewn landscapes as much as the next guy but when I'm starting a game I don't want this many dull colors. I want vibrance. I want a landscape that can make me feel like I'm immersed in a living world that isn't monotinous.

On that topic:

COMBAT:

The combat in WAR feels like WoW combat, except it seems a little slower and less active. By this I mean that the animations are slower and abilities take longer to cast/activate and that it's more standing in one spot and loking at these animations as you kill stuff. Not only that, but the skills you earn are few and far between. I might get two on rank 6 (there are ranks instead of levels) but only one on rank 7. One that isn't even useful.  The spells I did get weren't too exciting. There wasn't anything I could really get pumped at.

Back to the combat:

To me it seemed boring and repetetive in a bland landscape. A less polished and less exciting verson of the WoW combat system.

EVEYTHING ELSE:

I will honestly say that I was so turned off by the game that I didn't level my character past rank 8.  I just completely lost interest. You quest in one zone until you finish allll the quests and then you move onto the next zone which is more of the same, except that the setting is in a dark forest instead of a dark town. I found nothing to look forward to and propel me forward and nothing that was really redeeming about the game, save for a few things. I will list those things at the end if I have enough time.

FINAL OPINION:

Everone has their own opinions, and this is mine. This game honestly feels like a mod of WoW that has less races and classes. It's too slow for me, and there isn't enough variation. To me it is a major disappointment and I make this entry with a really bad feeling in my sotmach.

Don't say that I'm only comparing it to WoW cause it's the only game I know. I really don't like WoW and I never really played it too much at all. I'm saying this because it's how I actually feel.

Here are the game's features that almost made it interesting.

Saving Graces:

Realm v.s. Realm

Public quests

Customizable interface

The fact that the magus class is always on disks.

(in response to comments)

Steuss made the point clear. The point is that this game can't hold me past rank 8. I don't want to play the RvR and all that other stuff if I have to grind quests (public or not) alllll day. It's not worth it. And half of you didn't even read the whole thing before you commented. Or if you did, then I guess I did a poor job getting my point accross. This is my personal opinion and I specifically said that to try and get you people to accept a point of view instead of bashing your own in everyone's face. I don't care if you like the game. Go ahead and play it. I won't.

This is basically all I see when I read your post:

"Swords A and B look the same! They both have sharp edges and handles, even though A is differently colored and shaped than B, and is bigger and can be wielded with two hands instead of one. When is someone going to make an original sword for me to wield?!"

Your experience in the game was to level 8....

You never played wow at launch did you? Never played wow when going into org was a lag-fest or when the other faction decided to try to assault a city in the middle of this lag.

When TM was the PvP battleground.

You haven't even played to the end game in wow to understand what they mean when the say there isn't anything do do outside os raid the same monsters over and over and grind rep.

But you still think your educated enough about both games to offer your opinion and compare the two?

If you want to title this, maybe you should call it my opinions up to level 8... just to put your opinions into perspective.

Personally, i want to like the game, i really do, but while the Public Quests are fun and the RvR is awesome, i just feel like something is missing.
I don't know what exactly i find lacking, but i just get this feeling while playing that, as i said before, something is missing, i felt this way too about LotRO although not as early, and that may be what is turning me off WAR, the combat feel just as sluggish.
The tome feature however, is very much exciting to me, and as a rank 9 black orc i had no less than 20 titles to choose from and bunch of unlocked lore, but sadly this isn't enough to keep me playing...
I guess i'll just have to wait a few months and try again, then my WAR experience may be more pleasing to me.

Wow, rank 8. Way to look past the cosmetics. I bet you didnt even look at half the starting part of the game.

Do some research, learn how to spec your character, learn about your skills, realm rank gear, influence, RVR objectives, trophies for your armor, explore Altdorf, try learning about the game first before dishing it off

I just turned rank 11 and started getting the cool armor. The starting areas are gloomy and dark because an invasion is going on and there is foreboding. As you get further you're going to see change.

As for the UI, they've always been the same I've been seeing those UI's since 2000 in Korean mmo's, picture in corner and map, icons along the bottom it's just the way it is like a car dashboard. The layout editor lets you change anything you'd like though.

I hope you find a character to connect with, goodluck on your travels!

Smack on the nose there, perfect!  WAR does feel this way I was very unimpressed.  It has good PvP play but the PvE play is very weak.  It is like across between DOaC and WoW, and that isn't saying much.  It has a few redeeming qualities but the game feel small with only about a dozen PvE zones total (count the two maps that are in the same teir together as a zone, because u don't zone between them), and most of those are shared with PvP.

These are the same peeps that are gonna be doing KotORO and I honestly, for the love of all that is good and uberness, hope they do better with Knight of the Old Republic Online then they did with this half-assed visual abombination (ok that was a bit harsh).  But I was very let down by this, I see the potential for them improving the game and after my first 30 days if up will probably stop playing till the first expansion is announced.  But please EA/BioWare don't screw up KotORO <pouts lips> SOE already screwed over SW MMO once we don't need it to happen again.

for those that will complain about me not playing WAR enough my main is in high 20s and rr11.  I have also played a lot of games at start up and although most get better most usually offer something extremely impressive to keep people coming back.  AoC did, GW did, and to and extent WoW did.  WAR doesn't.  It probably will get better after month 6 and I pray it does because I would love to see this game succeed

To all the idiots that have a keep saying, "You didn't even get past rank 8! OMG that is so stupid ofyou! I mean how could you miss out on the RVR, the HIGH LEVEL CONTENT, the blah blah blah blah blah."

Morons, NONE of that matters if the game can't hold the player's attention past rank 8. I think the poster made it clear, there is something seriously lacking from WAR, WoW, LoTRO, etc. If they don't hold enough interesting Basics (combat, skills, spells, etc) from the very beginning, why should someone stick out hours and hours of time to get to the "end game??"

I too think the combat is clunky and very WoWish.. i wish it was more like Daoc instead. This is a reason why i too, didn't make it past rank 10.  Nothing new or intersting to hold me to the game.

I'm really wondering a lot of times what are people expecting from car. To have door on roof? To have 7 wheels? Just to be something different. What a nonsense. Good car takes the best experience of previous car makers. Hey, wheel has already been invented, I’m sure there will be no revolution about it, only evolution (maybe).

So, have been playing War since open beta and despite I miss few things, game is simply great! Ok, for now Wow is still my no. 1. And the only game I have been ever addicted (but after two lv. 70, seven alts from lv. 64 to 68 ... I needed some change). And no, Wow is not only game I have ever played and I know. I'm not so young; Spectrum was not even invented, when I was born. :-) And War is the second having chance to cause me addiction. And some day I guess will return to AoC to see if they have finished job. And please ... games older then 10 years could/were great at time. Pacman was really great. Then. Now is history, despite few hard-die lovers.

In War so far I have two lv. 11, and 7 up to 8, I love to experiment different alts (also a way not to be bored :-)). And for now game is getting better and better every day. I never liked PvP, actually I hated it; this is the first game where I really enjoy in PvP (ok, RvR). Before War I was sure I would never say something like that.

I do not care at all if it looks like Wow. Wow has great interface. Why to fix not broken things?

About delay between pressing any button ... explanation was to allow other player in PvP to have time to react. I'm either not sure if this is good or bad ... time will show. For now is not bothering me too much, but I would prefer shorter delay (like in AoC).

However I miss things in War (but not for this game is bad, because it is great, despite this!). Wheel discussion.

Now misses. Things are too simplistic a lot of times. I.e. white lion gets lion from start. In Wow you must find pet, tame it ... and later feed it, so it is happy. You must learn new »tricks« from animals in wild and then make them learn to your pet. In War (of course not only) you need only bow ... no need for arrows. In Wow you must buy arrows (and they are, like in real life, of different kinds). Out of arrows – no shooting. Talent build is much more interesting in Wow, you have 3 directions, but later is also important in which sub direction you go to get some goodies. In War only 3 directions ... then you simply add points in linear fashion. In War you can pull without problem certain mob from close group of 100 mobs without disturbing the rest. Feels pretty unreal. In Wow for every class there is separate trainer. Naturally. No one expect that medical specialist will be also good teacher of i.e. blacksmithing. In War one trainer trains all.

But the worst thing (all above is nothing compared to this) in War however – IMO - is gathering+crafting. It looks like joke compared to Wow where it is more like full time job, better to say science. This will cause bad economy in War, I'm sure. I just hope they will start to adding professions soon. Hey, we are in War! Remember? At least one would expect some kind of weapon and armor crafting, not talisman making!

Well, that is all about (mostly minor) things/problems I miss in War ... for the rest all the best.
