Vanguard Player Profile - Rikoo

Character Name: Rikoo Rakoo

Race: Raki

Class: Ranger

Adventure level: 30. (And staying 30, on purpose.)

Diplomacy level: 3

Crafting level: One of my characters is like level 19 crafting.

Harvesting level My total is like 390? I forget off hand.

Guild: None, and will not join one. Nothing against guilds. Immersion Rules, that's all.

Server: XETH baby!

*(optional) Tell us a bit about yourself (the RL person):

I am a 34 year old kid that refuses to grow up. I have a wife and 4 wonderful fur kids. I play drums and do art. I have traveled with my old band all over the US, and will do more touring soon. I am a big dork, but I am also a black belt in Karate.

Given Vanguards huge variety of races and classes, tell us how you picked your particular character & class and why:

The Raki are cute, but not in a "WoW Gnome" type way. I liked their racial ability of a bonus to run speed. I picked a Ranger because I like to solo and I like ranged combat. But, I learned later that (my favorite description) ranger ins Vanguard are Aragorn rangers, NOT Legloas Rangers.

What is it that drew you to Vanguard and how long have you been playing?

What drew me to it? It was cheap, as in 20 bucks. I had it on my Station Access so I figured I would stop reading about how the game had such a horrible start and would just give it a try. I'm glad I did!!

What sphere to you enjoy the most in Vanguard? (adventure, diplomacy, crafting)

Exploring and trading, if those were spheres. Other than that, adventuring.

Vanguard leaves a lot of room for different play styles, very thing from soloers to raiders, what is your preferred play style and why?

Oh boy, long story here. I play "Immersion Project" style, which is a rule set I made for myself that puts certain, more realistic boundaries on my character. For example, if he dies, he's dead. Period. I might even go so far as to delete the character.  Also, I only use certain forms of "normal speed' travel. It has been so much fun it drives me CRAZY. lol

What do you enjoy most about your class?

His survivability. he can live on his own in the woods forever. He can forage his own food, his own arrows, and can get away from a pinch anytime. He's just an everyman that kicks ass.

What would you change about your class if you could?

Hmm, I'm not sure. I love him the way he is. I am glad he is not a typical "hunter" class. I guess I would give him a ranged auto attack, but that's so minor.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in trying your class?

Play them till at least 15 before you decide. Also, always always shoot from stealth!

Of the places / areas you have visited in Vanguard what are your favorite?

Hmm, I love the docks at New Taragnor. They just seem to bustle, and they FEEL like a giant cities docks. Beautiful, too, especially at sunset.

Are there any particular favorite adventure sessions or quest you would like to share?

I have the most fun of my life every time I log in, seriously. The way I play has brought out the most of this game.
Oh wait..there was this one quest I did to help out some lil ghost, and the lil ghost told me to sneak into this giants lil hut and to steal something out of the giants lil (huge) chest. I snuck up in Stealth and slipped down a hill only to find the giant standing RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. I could hear him breathing, and he stood there forever, with lil question marks floating over his head. (The mobs do this when they might be sensing you are near.) I was literally so scared my hair on my arms stood up. It was brilliant!

Do you own a house? If so, where is it and what type is it? What do you enjoy about it and what would you change about housing if you could?

Housing is AWESOME. I own one on Conner's Retreat, with my own private beach! There isn't much I would change about the housing, but I would add some things like more seating, more mini-games, etc. Oh, and windows that actually open and close. I'm a girl like that.

Do you own a Ship? If so what kind is it? What do you use it for?

It is a beautiful green Caravel, given to me from a friend of my characters family. Seriously. I got a letter from this person and they gave me this whole back story of about my father and a debt they were re-paying, in the form of a boat. I was sooooo excited. I use it every day for my shipping route. I only travel by boat, foot, or horse.

What sort of mount do you own?

My brown horsey. His name is Royal. I have always used the same dark grey horse, but just upgraded his "class." I am going after my Shadow Hound, but honestly it doesn't fit my character to have one and isn't that much more of a mount. So I am staying with Royal.

What would you most like to see added or changed in Vanguard?

The largest ships in the game are due for release soon. They are about 4 times the size of my ship but have a cabin that you can decorate!! I would love to see them along with actual boat storage.

Beau

*(optional) Tell us a bit about yourself (the RL person)
Active duty Air Force NCO currently stationed in Germany. I've been playing MMO's for about 8 years starting as a Planetside beta tester and my first full up MMO, Earth and Beyond.  Since then I've played EQ2, SWG, EVE, Horizon beta tester, Lineage 2 beta tester, City of Heroes, LOTRO, DDO, Saga of Ryzom, Matrix Online, WOW, EQ, DAOC, Guild Wars....basically darn near everything.

Given Vanguards huge variety of races and classes, tell us how you picked your particular character & class and why.
Class was really not a difficult choice. I have always enjoyed the Ranger profession in all MMO's, exploring the world and spending days in the field hunting, so naturally I picked Ranger right away. Race, however, was a different matter. Originally I started with a Wood Elf, figuring Wood Elf and Ranger just went hand in hand. I was enjoying his progression when my wife decided to give Vanguard a shot and went straight for the human class. After many attempts of trying to coax her into the Wood Elf race, I surrendered and moved to a human Ranger. I'm enjoying it, but every now and then will sneak back to play the Wood Elf for a bit.

What is it that drew you to Vanguard and how long have you been playing?
I've only been playing Vanguard a few months. Several things drew me in though. First, just the sheer size of the world. I have never seen a world this big before. In SWG, I used to love running on foot all over Tatooine, hunting creatures in the hills and dunes for weeks before returning to the cities to sell my goods. Vanguards land masses puts SWG planets to shame. I have had a blast trying to explore every nook and cranny of the world so far.

The second thing that drew me in was the amount of professions and different skills each player can work on. Tired of Adventuring for the day/ Switch to crafting or harvesting or go find some NPC's and work on your diplomacy skills. There is always something to do.

The third thing that I love is that this game helps you a bit, but doesn't hold your hand. You have to really pay attention to the quests and ensure your gear and teams are prepared for the adventures. Running in hacking and slashing doesn't cut it.

What sphere to you enjoy the most in Vanguard? (adventure, diplomacy, crafting)

Right now I'm really enjoying the Adventuring side of the house. It lets me get out into the world and explore. Diplomacy is fun as well and reminds me of a different version of Legends of Norrath (except its free ! :) ).

Vanguard leaves a lot of room for different play styles, very thing from soloers to raiders, what is your preferred play style and why?

Soloer definitely. I enjoy getting out into the wilderness and just look for those odd sites or landmarks. Also it helps with questing and hunting when I get into groups in areas I have explored. if they don't have a clue where to go I have usually been there and can guide them right to it. I try and bring folks out on my treks, but they tend to miss cities after awhile.

What do you enjoy most about your class?

The freedom to explore a vast world and survive on my own, as well as help in a group. I can pull individual enemies to the group from a longer range, root them down for the tank or hide and sneak up behind them for a surprise attack.

What would you change about your class if you could?

Not real sure yet, I'm still to new to the game and low level to really have an idea of what he may need changed.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in trying your class?

Patience, it takes some time to get used to playing Rangers, or any character in Vanguard. If you are used to the quick paced leveling of other MMO's it may get a bit frustrating. Take your time, learn to evaluate your targets and from what I've experienced, you are great vs. 1-2 targets. Anymore then you need to run, and there is no shame in that.

Of the places / areas you have visited in Vanguard what are your favorite?

Themwars Shield. Nothing really special about it, its just a cool looking place and a good jumping pint to more rugged areas.

Are there any particular favorite adventure sessions or quest you would like to share?

No real favorites so far, i'm still rather new to Vanguard. however one particular session that made me like Vanguard even more was my first trip down to the RiftSeeker cave. We had a quest to enter the cave and enter a portal for a series of quests. well, we get down to the portal entrance, but have no clue how to get in. We walk through it....nothing happens. We jump, stand in it, etc...nothing. We reread our quest and it mentions nothing of how to enter. As we are talking to each other a non aggro NPC walks right to the front of the portal, looks at our groups, shrugs and says a strange saying.

Pop, he disappears.

Suddenly the lights clicks on and we all say the same words. Pop, we are in the dungeon.

4 days and many, many deaths and alot of swearing later we finish the quests and head out.

And that was just a level 10 cave.

Do you own a house? If so, where is it and what type is it? What do you enjoy about it and what would you change about housing if you could?

No, not yet. But I am trying to level my crafting up so I can support the creation of our guild house.

Do you own a Ship? If so what kind is it? What do you use it for?

No, no ship...yet

What sort of mount do you own?

A sooty brown horse right now. Its hard to believe that I already can buy and use a mount at this low of a level. Its great.  I'm working towards getting my city faction pet as well, but that may take a bit. Oh, and you can rent flying mounts for 25 copper, how great is that. You also have total control over the flying mount. Direction, how high/low they are and actually having to "launch" them into the air to get them flying. Its a blast!

What would you most like to see added or changed in Vanguard?

Better Guild Management tools. SOE, if  you are reading this, take the EQ2 guild management tools/functions and plant them in Vanguard. It desperately needs them.

Tell us a bit about yourself (the RL person)
I am a full-time employee, full-time college student, and have a family (wife and 1 daughter).  I’ve been gaming since text-based games and have played everything from Meridian 59, The Realm, AO up to WoW, LOTRO, and EQ2 and just about everything in between.
I game because it’s a love of mine.  After about seven months of marriage, I got my wife addicted and we’ve been gaming together ever since.  After spending time in WoW (up to endgame), EQ2 (up to level 40 or so), and LOTRO (didn’t last long there), we moved to Vanguard and have been in Telon ever since.

Given Vanguards huge variety of races and classes, tell us how you picked your particular character & class and why.
Basically, we played trial and error until we both found the classes we enjoyed.  With Vanguard, we quickly realized that EVERY class in the game is unique and plays differently from the rest.  We spent about 3 weeks playing each class up to level 15 or so to get a feel for the play style and then made a decision and started over.  One thing to mention…during this trial time I don’t think we EVER got bored or tired of starting over.  So many starting areas and lands to explore made this an easy approach for us.

What is it that drew you to Vanguard and how long have you been playing?
I initially tried Vanguard during Beta and at Release.  I realized very quickly at that point that the game needed a lot of work and help to get it where it should have been, so I stopped before my free month had expired.  About 3 months ago, after reading about the changes and hearing testimonies, I tried it again.  What drew me to this game was the open, expansive world, the varied classes and races, and the interesting lore, history, and stories.  I’m also drawn to the HUGE world and the feeling that I actually belong in Telon.  My character has not been so much an extension of myself since text-based games.

What sphere to you enjoy the most in Vanguard? (adventure, diplomacy, crafting)
Personally, I enjoy all 3 to some degree, but adventurer/explorer is my favorite. Crafting is fun, and the diplomacy is a very interesting and worthy concept, but I’ve had wanderlust since the day I was born and exploring Vanguard suffices when I can’t get out and explore in the real world (travel and exploration are two things I love to do).

Vanguard leaves a lot of room for different play styles, very thing from soloers to raiders, what is your preferred play style and why?
I play a lot with my wife (duo) and do some soloing, but I am definitely a group/social player.  I like to find a group of people, get together, and explore and adventure for the time we’re in game getting to know other people.  I’m not a fan of grouping “because we both have to kill 30 of these, so why not”.  While convenience is okay, I’ve always seen it in a different light.  As my wife and I enter the tavern (LFG), we’re looking for specific people.  We’re not going to jump at the first screaming jester that tumbles across our path.  We’re looking for quality players who enjoy what they do and seem to have a level head on their shoulders.  From time to time, a goon is inevitable in a party, but getting to know people helps build a network of friends to play with, which is enjoyable.
I have not yet attained the maximum level, and therefore, have not attended or completed any raid content, but I’ve always enjoyed the cooperation and cohesion required to take down raid bosses.

What do you enjoy most about your class?
I enjoy the fact that I am a CLERIC.  I am not a weak, insignificant individual hiding behind the big bad warrior wiggling my fingers.  I am a skull stomping, skeleton smacking tough guy who can hold his own against an opponent while providing aid to my companions as the backbone of the group.  The ability to solo well (most classes – not all – but most can) and the ability to heal while duoing with my wife is important as well.  She doesn’t enjoy healing, so I usually do it (and enjoy it).

What would you change about your class if you could?
I don’t have any complaints about it and don’t know that I personally would change anything.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in trying your class?
Accept that you are a healer and heal.  I’ve grouped with clerics before that were invited and understood that they were primary healer for a group only to have them stand around in Castigator’s Fury (offensive stance) and dps, letting people drop like flies.

Of the places / areas you have visited in Vanguard what are your favorites?
I am a huge fan of The Tomb of Lord Tsang (as far as dungeons go) and of Wailing Winds Asylum (that structure hanging off the side of the cliff over the water is amazing).  My favorite town/city is Agraham (love the Arabian marketplace feel to it).  We’ve had some amazing adventures in Telon, many of them in no-name places in between points of interest.  We only use traditional travel methods (foot/horse), so we do a lot of adventuring in the wilderness and while traveling.  Those are some of the best times we have in-game.
Are there any particular favorite adventure sessions or quest you would like to share?
Right after we started our most recent characters, we decided to explore Qalia some and see what was out there in the form of caves and dungeons to explore.  We decided to explore Chrysol Mines (I might be wrong on this location – I’m never good with names) and see what we could find.  Inside the cave, there were these creatures that burrowed into the ground and jumped out at you when you got too close.  It was dark as night inside and our torches weren’t casting much light, but my wife keeps the nametags on to be able to see the mobs better (she just had lasik surgery).  She thought we had cleared a small opening, so she strolled in thinking she was safe.  When one of these creatures jumped out of the ground and growled at her, she screamed (IRL) and jumped back out of her chair.  It was the funniest thing I’ve seen in a long time. (Almost as funny as the time she joined a raid (in WoW) for the first time and she pulled a raid boss while over ½ of the raid was AFK!)

Do you own a house? If so, where is it and what type is it? What do you enjoy about it and what would you change about housing if you could?
I do not currently own a house (but hope to very soon!)  We often go exploring home where permissions will let us in and we both love the way they are setup and the freedom you have to decorate them.  I would love to see the option to place armor/weapons in the house (my cleric has his first really nice weapon in the bank for that day).

Do you own a Ship? If so what kind is it? What do you use it for?
I don’t own a ship yet (again, I will one day).  I haven’t decided on a type yet, but I don’t use the rifts, so the boat will be used for travel, exploring (YAY), and roleplaying. (and fishing when it goes live!)

What sort of mount do you own?
Right now, I have a trusty pony named Brutus.  I haven’t decided on whether I’ll try later to tame one of the various beasts of Telon, but I do plan on one day forming an agreement with one of the noble winged species to soar in the skies with!

What would you most like to see added or changed in Vanguard?
I would love to see the BoP taken out of the game.  I’d really love seeing item deterioration as well.  Some customization for weapons (being able to name it myself) would be awesome.  Performance is absolutely amazing these days, and I would love to see the new character models and some new content for those hardcore folks.  (They need love too!)  I’m excited about fishing and perhaps other little things implemented.

I would like to thank Torak for the effort he is putting into this project.  Things like this build a community and make a game more than just something to play.  When you read about someone and then see them in-game, you understand a bit about them and what motivates them, which I think is important.  I am long-winded I know, but I like nothing more than to sit in a public place and watch people.  I wonder where they’re headed, what motivates them, and what’s going on in their life.  Catching a small glimpse into another players thoughts and ideas makes the world of Telon that much more interesting.

On that note, I’ve recently started a blog chronicling our adventures and journeys through Vanguard.  As I have time, I will continue to write and add more entries as we progress throughout the game.  I will drop the urls here as long as Torak doesn’t mind.

Tell us a bit about yourself (the RL person):

I currently live in Scottsdale, AZ. From WI and grew up in OR. Some of my hobbies are riding 4 wheelers, going to concerts, collecting DVD's (especially anime). When younger, I was hooked on AD&D, until the Apple IIE came out and played Wizardy and Ultima for the first time. Since that point, I have never looked back. I built my first computer, which was a AMD 386 (40 MHz), 4 Mbs of Ram and a ATI vid card (cant remember which one). One of my favorite games, including Castle Wolfenstein and Doom, was Ultima Underworld, The Stygian Abyss. It had one of the first interactive 3D enviroments (not just picking up ammo and health), great story and so many other great features. A real mind blower for its time. Years later, I became addicted to Ever-crack, EQ1. Since then, I have played numerous MMO's, but currently playing Vanguard and loving it.

Given Vanguards huge variety of races and classes, tell us how you picked your particular character & class and why:

To be honest, I remember in EQ1 how uber wizards were, even though I never played one, and decided to go that route in Vanguard. I use the same character names in most all the MMO's I have played, as long as they are available.

What is it that drew you to Vanguard and how long have you been playing?

I have been playing Vanguard since its pre-release, not beta. I got a buddy key that allowed me to play a few days before the game went live to the general public and have been playing since. I could see immediately that this game was a diamond in the rough, regardless of its many faults at release. I knew that if the negative issues could be fixed, that this game was going to be one of the best MMO's available.

What sphere do you enjoy the most in Vanguard?

(Adventure, Diplomacy, Crafting): As you can tell by my profile, I am not a big crafter or diplomacy person. I do think that VG has one of the best crafting systems and Diplomacy is something so new and fresh to the MMO world, I have to give it credit as well.

Vanguard leaves a lot of room for different play styles, every thing from soloers to raiders, what is your preferred play style and why?

I like to solo, as I enjoy trying to prove prove my strengths and skills to myself. But, I have had friends playing right along side me from day one as well, who I met in EQ1 and have been playing with since.

What do you enjoy most about your class?

I enjoy being able to kite mobs to their deaths, but still find the class challenging as Sorcerers are made of paper it seems. Taking on more than two mobs at a time, usually spells death. Two mobs is the sweet spot for a good challenge.

What would you change about your class if you could?

Until high levels, a Sorcerer doesn't really have much to add in the way of group buffs, but plenty of other classes make up for this. The only useful ability we have is our evac. I do wish we had some more unique utilies, whether levitating, invising or teleporting group members (all of which we can do to ourselves, but no one else). I'm sure there are some more unique ideas than those, but sometimes I do feel I am there for nothing more than the nukeage.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in trying your class?

Make friends and/or join a guild. There is so much awesome group content to this game that I assure you, you will not be disappointed to have some help along the way.

Of the places / areas you have visited in Vanguard what are your favorite?

At the early levels, I thought that Pantheon of the Ancients was an awsomely huge looking dungeon. Mid level my favorite was the Xennu City. From above it looked like an ancient egyptian city had sunk into the sea coast line. Once you acquire a key, you can be teleported to its insides with unique and challenging quests. Being in a guild that is raiding now, APW is nothing short of spectacular in its size, grandeur and challenge.

Are there any particular favorite adventure sessions or quests you would like to share?

My first favorite, was Lord Tsangs Tomb (awesome low level weapons can be acquired). Hunters League and CIS are equally rewarding. Wardship of the Sleeping Moon is great as its very challenging and tests the tenacity of the most dedicated adventures. Greystone Castle is a superb example of a group dungeon with excellent rewards. But, APW tops them all, testing the true strength and skill of an adventurer and its raid force. The mobs require specific strategies that must be learned and practiced before success can be yours.

Do you own a house? If so, where is it and what type is it? What do you enjoy about it and what would you change about housing if you could?

I have built a Tier 5 house on Qalia contenent. I like the fact that you can add chests to store more of your personal goods. I do wish they would add the option to change / customize the exterior of the house and make interior decorating items that resemble gear in the game, such as swords, axes, armor and such, if not allow you to place gear that has dropped as decorating items.

Do you own a Ship? If so what kind is it? What do you use it for?

I own a Thestran Sloop. It gets me and my friends around, but not much to look at.

What sort of mount do you own?

I currently own a level 30 horse and due to my lack of in game funds, am working on the griffon quest. My favorite mount was Randall the flying reindeer. Flying in the game is unbeatable. The screenshots and areas I have explored are second to none. FLYING ROCKS!!!

What would you most like to see added or changed in Vanguard?

I could go with the same old stuff like increase performance, content (more quests, dungeons, continents...), but I wont. I would love to see an unbelievable underwater adventuring area and places that would look from out of this world (alien, extradimensional, planar...). And as stated earlier, flying rock. I would like to see a flying capability added that does not require the use of a mount. The mechanics are there, mounts can do it, why cant I. We are magical races with extraordinary powers after all.

Thanks for giving me the opportunity to be involved in your survey and blog. I look forward to seeing it and others. I also hope that my experiences in the game help show others the depth, complexity, challenges and beauty of Vanguard.

Best of luck and Peace!!

James
