Seriously...this song by Saliva pretty much says it all for part three of this blog entry - My Dream MMORPG. I couldn't say it better myself. Truly, you'll be begging for more. So onward we go into the mind of a gamer girl who is so jaded that she has finally decided she would spill the beans on what she wishes to see in her dream MMORPG. Make sure your seats and trays are in the upright position and your seat belts are fastened.

Before I really get started, I wish to touch on something. Ships and their importance in this game. Kirk had his Enterprise, Reynolds has his Serenity, Solo his Falcon, and Bikirk her Sol Biance, and so should you. I dreamed of having a ship of my own in an MMORPG. Oh sure we got them in SWG, EVE and other such games that allow players to have their own ships and they truly do rock, but not like they should. There is just not enough to them to make them our ships and what you can do with them is limited. Not in my MMORPG. Ships in my game are just as important as the players. Think of the roleplay possibilites one can partake of in their ship with other gamers...omg...the sky is the limit for all sorts of roleplaying, quest, missions sitting around just shooting the breeze inside your very own fully customizable star ship!

Yea in my dream MMORPG I'll be able to have my dream ship. I'll be able to deck her out as I want, with the things I want, inside and out! Give her a special paint job, and then make sure her name is painted on her hull for all others to see. You'll not only be able to walk around outside your ship, but the inside as well. Yes...that is just as important as anything! Seriously. Being able to walk around inside your ship is of the utmost importance in my game. Why? Because it is a roleplaying game and your ship is just another tool(albiet a very special to your heart tool) to RP with!

Just like a player can increase their skills, your ship will be up-gradable and increase what it can do. Some ships will be space bound always do to size, however, some will be able to go planet side and actually land on them. Yes, atmospheric flight will be in my dream game. The game will use cut-scenes to show your ship going from space to the planets atmosphere, but once in the atmosphere you're back in control. You'll have to land her. There will be space ports for players to make use of. Some will be nothing more than huge parking lots, others will be more elaborate...but your ship will never just blink out of existence nor get stored in a data pad - ever.

Depending on the size of the ship you may have to hire a crew to man her, either NPC type henchmen or robots or real players or a combination of al lthree - it'll be up to the player how they hadle this aspect. Ships will come in all shapes and sizes and use various means of FTL (faster than light) travel and some will have to make use of worm gates because they don't have FLT capabilities.

Space flight is all twitch, and so is combat with ships. In my dream MMORPG you'll be able to board enemy vessals and take their cargo, kill the players on her if you like, and leave her a derelict - drifting in space. Sooner or later a scavanger ship will come along and chop her up for parts and material, maybe even a player ran scavenger ship. Remember, in space, nobody can hear you scream. Well..not exactly true. See if your ship is registered with the Galactic Confed (known as just Confed) or the United Planets of Earth (UPE) then there is a good chance if your ship is attacked and you can ID the attacker, send off a mayday and let the authorities know you are being attacked by space pirates or raiders and you may still die and loose your ship and cargo...but atleast you'll make it much harder for the pirates to get away with it. See in my dream MMORPG you can help generate game content simply buy playing the game. When you send the info in about your attacker...that info goes up on Galcom and UPE central databases. The authorities make that info available to all other players to warn them of where a pirate attack occurred adn who was responsible. This will allow the players that choose to play pirate hunters and bounty hunters to gain information on where the last known position of the pirate or raider was at...making it easier to hunt them down. Oh yes, once you decide to become a pirate or a raider, be aware...you'll be hunted.

Note: Players can choose to take out insurance on their ships and of course insurance on cargo.

Now...what will players do in this giant sandbox game to occupy their time. As I have mentioned the game will have quest/missons, but much of the content will be generated simply by how the players play the game. Those players that wish to be merchants will need goods to sell. So their will be awesome crafting in this game. If their are crafters then there will need to be players who gather the raw materials for the crafters to make all the various items that will be available in game. This opens up huge opportunities for playes to set up networks to buy, sell, and trade goods among one another. Not going to go into detail here on how this would work, not enough time, but I have actually worked this out on paper based on my experince with the game SWG pre-NGE.

Now as I mentioned there will be hard written quest and mission, but there will also be dynamic content added to the game from time to time. What is dynamic content? Dynamic content is content that can change as players interact with it and change its nature or manipulate it and some of it is randomly generated. For instance. A new alien species is introduced as players come in contact with them, they will eventually be intergrated into the game or they might be wiped out - due to a virus or maybe intergalactic war. Again this will depend on how that scenario plays out. Randomly generated content could be a player coming across a derelict space craft. Like there you are in your ship. You're in FTL between two star systems and suddenly you are yanked out of FTL space because you recieve a distress signal from a ship. You scan it for life forms and there is none showing. So you and your crew decide to board it to see what she has on her. You dock with her. Board her and find she is full of cargo and her crew had mysteriously abandoned ship via escape pods. No reason given why - they just did. Suddenly one of your crew members learns why. The ships main drive system is off line and leaking high levels of deadly gamma radiation in small burst. So do you risk a random burst of gamma radiation(which can kill you instantly without the proper shielding) and go for the cargo, or do you leave and report that derelict ship to the authorities so they can take care of it?

Another example I'll use is from one of my stories this game is based on. My main characters had needed to repair their ship after an encounter with UPE authorities. So they set down on a planet that was friendly toward them and they had contacts on. While there the main character went out and got totally wasted and ended up running up her gambling debt with one of the casino's that happened to be owned by one of the local crime bosses that also happens to be the local goveranor of this planet. Having a bit of a relationship with this local crime boss, the main character knows how dangerous he can be when he demands that she pay up her debts before leaving the planet. If she doesn't he'll put a bounty on her head in Confed controlled space and that is the last thing she wants or needs. She also doesn't want her companions to know once again that she has gotten herself into trouble. So she figures out a way to get out of trouble and make a little money on the side. She scans Gal Com for bounties that maybe available on the planet they are on. Sure enough there are a half a dozen, but one in particular caught her eye and not only would it pay of her debt - but make her a little extra on the side. No the main character is not a bounty hunter perse, she is more a merc/pirate/trader - but not really a bounty hunter but her skills are more than capable of hunting down and taking out a wanted felon. So while her companions are busily hunting down parts and repairing the ship, she goes after her mark. Even though she has a hangover (alcohol and drugs will have an effect on your character so be aware of this). She goes into town and begins her hunt asking the local merchants and or various people on the streets if they have seen a particular person. Eventually she is pointed to a local brothel and goes there. Once there she buys a drink and ask the bartender if the guy in question is still present, she slips him a couple of hundred "Quill" (quill is the name used for Confederation money) to get him to fess up. He nods and points to a door in the upper part of the brothel.

Then she waits. Soon her mark comes down, a local hooker by his side. They come down the stairs and he stands at the bar and the hooker still hangs on him. The mark mostions for the bartender to bring him a drink. Then my character makes her move. She takes out her PDP, punches up the info from Galcom and slides it down the bar to the mark. She has to make sure it is the right person. The mark glances down and see's the wanted poster on the PDP for him on the view screen and realizes someone has hunted him down. He feels safe though. He knows this bounty hunter will not dare make a move on him here on this world - atleast so he hopes. This is how it plays out.

Carvel doesn't look up as he glances at the wanted poster on the PDP. "So...and what is your point? Do you know who I am?" He says with his heavy english accent.

"Yep."
"Then you know you can't touch me bitch."
"Is that so?"
"Yea...because if you do you'll never leave this rock again."
"I beg to differ."

Others in the bar of the brothel move away from the two knowing that this can only end in one way. Tash takes another drink of her scotch, her head still pounding from the neverending hangover from the night before. Drinking more she knows will deaden the pain and steady her nerves - as it always does. She also knows Carvel is dangerous, he's all ready proven how deadly he is since he is wanted for murder in half a dozen star systems. Then again, Tash is wanted in every system in UPE space, so they should be about even.

"Aey...I know who you are. There is a bounty out on your pretty little ass in UPE space. I could retire on that kind of money." Carvel taps a few keys on Tash's PDP and then slides it back down the bar to her.  A wanted poster appears. "Wanted: Dead or Alive - Tasharra De'Nar - 100 million credits. A list of crimes from murder to terrorism shows up on the poster. Tash notices the bartender looking at the PDP screen. She hits the off button while looking at him, her glance alone lets him know that he'd be stupid to even move at this moment.

The hooker that once stood next to Carvel slips away toward the back of the bar. Carvel takes a sip of his drink and sets it back down on the bar. "We going to do this Tash..." before he finishes his sentence, Tash steps back from the bar spins and kneels as she releases a well aimed kyber blade toward Carvel. Carvel turns, draws his sidearm from it's holster on his hip and lets a round fly just as Tash's blade catches him mid-chest. The hooker, behind the bar now, let out a scream that pierces the air like a sharp knife. Tash falls back to the floor as the round from Carvel's pistol rips through her shoulder. Carvel looks down at the blade that is sticking out of his chest up to its hilt. He then looks at Tash as she slowly gets on her feet, her left hand applying pressure to the wound he had given her. She winces as blood spills out between her fingers and looks at Carvel through painfilled eyes. Carvel stumbles back and steadies himself with his free hand with the bar. His pistol falls to the floor as he looses his grip on it. "You killed me...you bitch."

"I know." She answers.

Carvel's legs give out and he falls to the floor with a defeaning thud. Tash looks around at those present still applying pressure to her wound. She looks at the bartender. Call the local authorities..and get their asses out here - now! The bartender nods quickly and moves toward the com booth. Tash walks toward Carvel's body and kneels beside it. She takes her bloody left hand and removes a small device from her belt and takes a sample of Carvels blood. She pushes a button and gets a DNA match. She drops to the floor and sits against Carvel's body. Those present slowly make their way out of the brothel through the swinging portal doors and disappear into the various crowds.

Skip to what happens next.

Tash shows the local authority the bounty and the matching DNA. An officer kneels and takes his own sample. He nods to his partner. One of the officers slips a memory crystal card into his PDP and punches a couple of keys and then removes it handing it to Tash. Tash will need to take the card to the local authorities main office to collect the bounty to prove that she has elemented a known felon. She first goes to a local med center and gets patched up. Then she collects her 50,000 quill and goes to see Raffe, the local crime boss she owes money to.

A couple of hours later Tash walks into Raffe's office. One of Raffe's goons stops her as she enters. Raffe looks up from his desk. "So...you have my money Tash?" Tash nods to Raffe. Raffe notices the bandaged shoulder. "Looks pretty nasty and painful sweetheart...the guy must have been good to have even touched you."

"He was fast...just not that good of aim."

Raffe motions to the goon at the door to let her approach. Tash walks forward and stops in front of Raffe's desk tossing a small cloth bag onto it. "30 g's, that is everything I owe you." She looked at him with disdain, she really had no clue why she even delt with Raffe the way she did, she actually hated him, but she also knew that when times are lean Raffe could get her jobs nobody else could. Raffe picked up the bag and leaned back in his chair and poured the chips out into his hand. "Very good sweetheart. It was a pleasure doing business with you - as always." He smiled up at her as he placed the chips back into the small pouch.

Suddenly one of Raffe's girls burst into the office and quickly steps over to him, leaning in close to his head she whispers something into his ear. Tash steps back one step from the desk as Raffef's eyes lock onto her's. He stands and pushes the girl next to him to the floor and Rafffe's goon moves toward Tash. Tash draws her pistol and points it at Raffe's forehead. "Don't Raffe...don't do it, tell your goon to stand down or I'll drop you they way I dropped your naphew."

Raffe motioned for the goon to stop. Looking down the barrel of Tash's pistol into her eyes. "You fucking little bitch...that was my naphew." Tash just shrugged her shoulders and winced slightly while doing it. "Money is money Raffe. What the hell do you care if your sadistic little naphew is dead?"

"You're dead Tash...!"

"Now, now Raffe...let's not get our panties in a wad. You know that isn't a good ideal. I'm one of your best customers and I make you plenty of money, all your naphew ever did was bring heat down on you. The way I see it, I helped the both of us out on this one. I cleaned up a mess you yourself have always wanted to clean up and I just took out a business competitor that didn't make you a third of what I have made for you. In the end we both win."

Raffe puts his hands up and smiles at her with his wry crooked smile. "You know...you have a point. My brothers son has been more than I can handle and a serious pain in my side." He slowly sits back down in his chair and motions his goon to move back away from Tash. The girl on the floor picks herself up and moves to Raffes side and he slips his left arm around her slim waste. "You know Tash I under estimated your convaluted enginuity...pure genius." He laughs. As he laughs the goon at the door and girl at his side laughs and Tash places her pistol back into the holster at her side. "We'll be in town a couple of more days Raffe...if you have any jobs you need done locally, just send us word." Raffe smiles at Tash. "I might have something. I'll get back with you and Trin on that."

Tash smiles, turns looks at the goon with a steady glare, her hand still resting on the pistol at her side as she walks to the door. Raffe watches her leave admiring Tash's female form. As she leaves Raffe calls out to her. "Someday Tash, I'll own you...you'll slip up one of these days sweetheart and you'll be mine."

"Dream on Raffe...dream on." She closes the door behind her.

Now of course, this is written in book form and not exactly how something might take place in game, but I feel something like this could be programmed into an MMORPG if the right game mechanics are created for it to play out in such a manner. In my dream MMORPG, that is how something might go down in game. There are many ways in which Tash could have gotten out of trouble with Raffe, she just chose a different way to do it. In other words - quest or missions may have multiple ways to accomplish them. All Raffe wanted was his money and he didn't care how Tash got it. So Tash used her head and found a way to elimanate a competitor and make money and still pay Raffe what she owed him - completing the mission. Frakking cool huh?!

Just so you know what you just read is not the original script from my story, it is a hacked down version of it. The original is a lot longer and part of a group of short stories. What you just experinced was player made content. Tash's actions caused another action and this in turn caused another and another. This is just one small example of game play in my dream MMORPG.

My Dream MMORPG - "It'll knock your socks off and blow your mind." Part 2

"So tell me Kristi about this Dream MMORPG you have cooking in that pretty little whacked out head of yours."

Well...let me tell you, its like nothing you have ever seen before, it'll not only knock your socks off but, blow your mind as well.   Seriously...my dream MMORPG will be the bestest thing since Volta discovered batteries and let me tell you I like my batteries, so you better believe me when I say my Dream MMORPG will revolutionize this gaming genre.

I have all ready said that the game would be basically an open ended, sandbox, sci-fi, space opera (yea thats a mouth full huh) with graphics that would even make baby Jesus shed a tear of joy.   Now let me go into a little more detail about what else you'l find in my dream MMORPG.

I'll start with a little background history.  The game is set in the year 2169, or there about's...no reason for that date, it just kind of rolled off my tongue when I said it, i liked it, so I picked it and I figured if we look how far we've come in the last one hundred years there is no reason humans would not have found a way to leave this rock.   So yea...the year in my game starts in 2169 and we can galavant across the galaxy from one end to the other discovering all kinds of new places and wondrous things, dangerous things...::does her alien impression of the guy from the movie Explorers::...like Space Pirates!   Awesome huh...a whole frakking galaxy to play in fraught with danger, love, crime, sex, booty, aliens and just a whole lot of merchanty shitz we can steal, plunder, trade, sell, and who knows maybe even extort.  Mwhahaha....oh yes...my verse is not for the weak and timid...because out here in my Dream MMORPG...omg...there are things - things Mikey, things that can eat you!

Now as I said the humans learned they were not alone.  Yes there will be other species in my game for instance there is a species known as the Da Sha Nae(dah-shah-nay <<< so you pronounce it right.   I am really kinda anal about how the names of the different species you'll come across in my dream MMORPG's names are pronounced - DEAL WITH IT!)  The Da Sha Nae are a very advanced species that have actually had earlier contact with humans, in our  distant past.   You know that big rocky thingy in England known as Stone Henge.   Yea...I explain that.   Yep.  As well as many other things in my game.  Seriously...my game is that good...it is so good it even explains the origins of cats.  Yep the common house hold cat.   They are not what you think.   Seriously...cats are not of this earth originally.   My game explains this though.   You'll see.

Speaking of that henge thingy, that is how the Da Sha Nae use to travel between our world and thiers for hundreds of years back in the day.   Very similar to a Star Gate, but without out all the technical stuff that goes along with it, like buttons and lights and weird symbols.   Nah...the Da Sha Nae don't need that sorta stuff any longer they have advanced past that stage.   Think of them as elves in space.  They are so far ahead of humans that we'd be like mere children to them.   Oh they do use technology, but nothing any human could ever use.   Oh and no they do not have pointed ears...I said they are like elves, but they are not elves...ok.   Anyway...going on.   You know that guy Merlin that was in England long ago?   Yep...he was Da Sha Nae.    No what that means?  Yep...magic...it's everywhere.    Even in my Dream MMORPG there will be magic.   I'd go into great detail on how magic in my verse would work...but I do not have the time and this blog entry has to end somewhere and I have so much more to tell you about my dream MMORPG that there just wouldn't be enough room on this page - really.

So I'd like to touch on another of the races you'd encounter other than human.   For intance the Draconians(draw-koe-nee-ans).   Think Klingon and then breed it with a Komodo dragon.    Neat huh...a bad arse lizard dude.   Yea...these guys are nothing to mess around with.   In fact they are major players in the Galactic Confederacy.   It was either let them, the Draconians participate in the running of the galaxy or they'd just as soon take it for themselves.   The Da Sha Nae and Gwerska((gweer-ska) another prominent species decided it would be best for all to let the lizards play with them - btw Gwerska sorta resemble otters.   No really and they are so very cool - you'll like these guys, their whole planet is nothing but water!  Fresh water!)

Oh and oh my god, if you think the Draconians are bad...pfft!   The Thuverians(thew-very-ans) are ten times worse and eat Draconians for breakfast...infact...Thuverians eat just about anyone or anything breathing they come into contact with - they do not believe in prisoners - they prefer to suck you dry of liquids first and then eat what remains slowly - raw.   Thuverians are insectoid and live in a quarantined part of the galaxy - that is just how bad arse these dudes are...think Praying Mantis, with a hive mentality, that knows how to use technology - weird tech...but technology nevertheless.   Amazing I know...I thought that one up all by myself.   ::pats herself on the back::  There piece of the galaxy is left alone....and you'd best stay away from it...unless of course you think you're tough enough to go in and see what kind of tech and what not you can find on their inhabitat worlds.  Be warned though...not many ever come back from that part of the galaxy - ever again.    Yea...bummer dude...perma death sucks.

OMG you mean I didn't tell you.   Sorry...guess it must have slipped my mind, yea...see - my game has perma death.   I know...it just signed its death warrant.   Who in the right mind would play a game with perma death in it?  Well I figured out a way to include it into my game and make it work and guess what.  It is staying in.   So the next time you go running off across the galaxy, in my Dream game, without a care in the world...better be saying a little prayer in the back of your head that you'll survive to see the next day.    ::using her bestest wicked witch voice:: " You're not in World of Warcraft anymore and neither is your dog Toto."

Yea there will be perma death.  Don't sweat it though...it is all handled very well and for you to die permenently would be very hard to do.  See in my dream MMORPG nano technology has advanced to the point that your body can be regenarated over and over again...but be aware...eventually it can no longer be regen'd and you have to pay the Reaper his due.   Play smart, wise and careful in my Dream MMORPG...because it doesn't play fair and things don't always go as you would like...its dangerous out there in the blackness of space and as the old saying goes...in space nobody will hear you scream.  So weak and timid players stay away.   This is for us hardcore sandbox rats!   :p

How is it I can write so much about a make believe game?  Dude...I have dreamt of this game for years!  Oh my god...if you only knew how long.   Even back before there was UO  I was dreaming of such a game.   No seriously.   My game is based on a book I wrote...actually two books and a few short stories - anthologies.   So guess what...yea...my game is full of lore!  Why?  Because of the books I wrote.   Yea I actually wrote books.  I know my grammar and such is terrible, but I use to write stories and one day I wrote a book and then another...never got them published though.   Hmmm...maybe someday.   ::shrugs::  Nevertheless, omg...so because these books are chuck full of lore I aways dreamed that one day my ultimate dream MMORPG would be based off them!  Yea...I know...hehehe...I am loopy huh.   Never mind that, just think...this truly could be the holy grail of MMORPG's!  OMG and here I am typing about it.    Tell me that isn't so frakking cool!

Lore in my dream MMORPG will be a big part of it.   So learn it and learn it well, it might save your characters life someday.   ::huge grin::

Now moving on we'll dig a little deeper into my dream MMORPG.   Guess what?  My dream MMORPG woud have no classes and no levels!  Yea!!!!!!!  She is going to break the mold with this one folks.   Actually their are constraints, you just can't pick up any skill you like, oh yea it is all skill based, and that is where a characters stats come in.   See this is a role playing game, but it is up to you to define the role your character plays.   Will you be a merchant ship captain plying your trade from one world to another, or maybe you'd like to be a doctor or perhaps a bounty hunter.   The possibilities are endless...it is all up to you the player to create the kind of character you wish to play.  As I said you're not in World of Warcraft any more...this is a true sandbox game so be what you like, but be aware you can't be everything.  

So yea, your characters stats will pretty much determine your characters abilities and skills you can obtain, which in turn will pretty much define what it is you can and cannot do.  There are the usual stats we're all use to like intelligence, strength, agility, speed and what not.   Once you've placed your stat points you can go in and select a certain number of skills.   Some species have abilities only they can have and some even get skill bonuses and the ability to learn a couple of extra.   Don't think that'll make you a god in this game because all the species have pros and cons - all of them.

So for instance...lets say you wish to play a bounty hunter...that is all your character wishes to do.   Track down bad guys and collect the bounty on them and trust me, there will be more than enough bad dudes to go around for all you wanna be bounty hunters in my verse.   So what does that mean for stats for such a character.  Well strength isn't as important as speed and agility, so you'd know doubt put more points into speed and agility and of course you'd be very smart so you'd put more points in intelligence and since you are a bounty hunter your wisdom will be important as well, gotta have those street smarts you know.    Once you've built your character using the stats, a set of skills will become available for you to choose from.   Some will be for other unrelated things, but all the skills a bounty hunter might use will be at your disposal...pick them wisely and train them up.   As you get better with your skills, you'll unlock more skills in your related line of work.   Further advancing your knowledge and ability in the profession you have chosen.  Eventually though, you'll not be able to gain enough skill points to progresss any further in a particular skill.   Law of numbers.   You'll have maxed your character out.   How long will that take, I dunno, haven't crunched the numbers to determine how fast one might learn a skill to the point that they can no longer progress in it...but if this game is ever made - you can bet I'll let you know!

Stats as I said also determine what you can and cannot do.   Like for instance a character that is not strong will never, ever be able to wield a Lom Mok Tar Hyper Velocity Rifle - ever.   Just isn't going to happen.   Now a Draconian warrior can...but Jemetha of the Da Sha Nae with his low strength attribute will never use it.  It is to big and bulky of a weapon for him to use.   Get the ideal.  

Now certain weapons and armor everyone can use.   As long as they are within your characters stats abilities.   Some weapons are skill based.  Some are species based.  Some are even so advanced that only the most skilled of players can wield them as long as they meet all the criteria to be able to use it.    Now weapons very and all are pretty much dangerous and fit a role of there own.   As I said...think of games like BF2 and Planetside and you get the gist of how weapons will work in my game.   That levels the playing field - since this game is based on FPS type combat.    A noobie guy with a steady aim can easily send a veteran player to the regen chambers under the right conditions.

Yep there is PvP in this game, but it isn't all out all the time wherever you go in my dream MMORPG...ok really it is...but a player would be really stupid to start a gun fight in he middle of a casino with casino guards all around.  They'll kill you if the can, not permanently, but you'll wish you character were dead when they are done.  So yea, you can pretty much kill anyone, anywhere at anytime...but you better know the laws of the world you are on - because some worlds show no mercy to murderers.

This brings me to another thing about my game.  It is of course an awesome open ended, sand box, sci-fi, space opera game, but it will also be aimed at mature players.   My game will all for your character to have flaws - serious flaws.   Because in my game there will be crime, sex, drugs, murder, extortion, gambling and all kinds of nefarious activities one can participate in including running slaves.   Bad stuff.   But hey...I am sick of these patty cake, patty cake, bakers man games....ugh...I wish to play a game with real mature content in it.   So my dream game will have it.  

For instance as I told you I wrote a book that t his game was based on...I know isn't that so frakking cool...anyhoo, my main character had a thing for scotch.   Her species is very easily addicted to scotch...she is a human hybrid...yea this is something else I forgot to mention...humans are not exactly as we are today...I discuss it later though.  Anyway, this human hybrid(a genetically engineered hybrid - known as a huminal(cross between a human and a lynx), no...no...no...furries they are not and no they do not look anything like you can may be thinking right about now.   Most huminals are very human looking.  Some have different degrees of hybridness but nothing to extreme.   So she has this addiction to scotch.   When she drinks it, she gets totally messed up, forgets things, and can get herself into all kinds of trouble...like running up a gambling debt.   These flaws your character will come across will have to be controlled.  If you don't you could end up dead.   Some are that serious.   Lots of bad stuff out there your character can get into in this game...like I said it is not for the meek and timid.

Worlds will be many, but some maybe nothing more than a way station, with only a small star port, a hotel, a bar and maybe a casino and other minor little businesses and a couple of smaller settlements scattered here and there.  While others may have three of four good size cities on them and decent landmass to explore.  

Some quest will be hard written into the game while others are player driven and or just crop up based on how you play the game.   Like say you are a merchant ship captain with questionable background and you travel about the galaxy delivering your goods from one place to another making money and such, gambling here and boozing it up there.  Then one day you cannot take off.  Something is wrong with your ship.   So what do you do?   You figure out something is wrong with the anti-grave lifters and you need another part.   Well you could travel to this one planet, it is easy to get to, has the part you need and it is dirt cheap, but you're not welcome there.   Then of course you could hitch a ride to this other planet that you know has the part you need, but yea...you've got gambling debts there and the local crime boss is looking for you.   So...you have to figure something out or else the local star port will impound your ship and sell it at the next auction because you can no longer pay the fees.   See that is player made content.  Nothing the game really had planned...it just happened that way because that is how you played the game.  

A hard written quest or mission may be to deliver a certain cargo - say medicine to a distant outpost on the edge of the galaxy.   You'd pick it up the mission via Gal Com (sorta like our internet, but galactic wide) and be on your way.

There will be no go kill me a billion Bumble Snarfs in my dream game by the way, though you may need to actually kill a Bumble Snarf someday in the game, nobody will force you to kill a Bumble Snarf...ok.   Their are missions to outpost that may need a certain creature thinned out a bit because the are posing a threat to the outpost...but you can bet they will pay good for killing them - but nobody will ever force you to do it - ever.

I'll explain questing and dynamic content later in another update about my Dream MMORPG.  It'll go into a lot more detail.

Now as for other little things...like sex, yes I did mention it would be a part of this game.  Don't think of it as porn, because it ain't!  In fact you'll never see any actual sex acts in the game.  It is just implied.   Like if your character picks up a hooker(using hookers in game has pros and cons).  You'll never really see your character do the dirty with the hooker...you just see a cut-scene that implies that you did.  OK.  OK we discussed sex.

On to drugs.   Yea...drugs are in this game.  Can your character get hooked on them.   You better bet you can.   All drugs have pros and cons...some are worse than others.  Be aware though, using a drug like suprenol to enhance your agility can lead to some nasty side effects.   There is also illicit recreational drugs in the game.  Use them at your own risk.   Some can really mess with you and some are extremely addictive.    Use them at your own risk.  Big money can be made running and dealing with certain illicit drugs however the law will punish you severely if you are caught in my Dream MMORPG.  

There is all kinds of ways one can make money in my Dream MMORPG and it will not be that hard to come by...keeping it...that is the key.   You'll be able to gamble.   Be a merchant.  A crafter.   A crime boss.   A space pirate.  A miner.   A bounty hunter.   A mercenary.  An assassin.   A smuggler.   A doctor.    It is up to you to pick your skills and to define what your character is and then to play the role of it in my dream MMORPG.   The possibilities will be many and adventure will be limitless.

My Dream MMORPG - "I think it'll knock your socks off!" Part 1

Long ago in a verse far, far away, in another time and place gamers were treated to the words of an MMORPG producer and they were simply, "I think it'll knock you socks off."   Only to be disappointed in the end.   Ever since that day I have looked for an MMORPG that would really knock my socks off.   Unfortunately none have done so, though many have come close, such as games like Planetside, Dark Age of Camelot, Star Wars Galaxies(pre-NGE), but none have really grabbed me the way I wished they would have.

So in my usual not so casual and rambling kinda of way I will describe to you my dream MMORPG, my perfect virtual game world - unlike anything you ever seen - ever!

Now I will admit I've done my share of bitching, moaning and whining on forums, with the best of the best jaded gamers, for years about the various games as I played them, and many people who have read my rantings on forums from here to the Vault Network over the years know how passionate I am about my MMORPG's.   I am, to put a bluntly, an MMORPG fangirl from hell.    I can rant and rave like no other.  Seriously....I love these games to the point that I often daydream about making my own...let's face it, name me one gamer of this genre that hasn't dreamt of making their own MMORPG - just to show the so called experts how it's done.  

God how I wish I could raise the capitol to make my perfect MMORPG.   Oh and it would be perfect!   I know it would...because I would be in charge and I'd make sure that my game truly did launch with everything I design into it.   What kind of game you ask.   Hang on...because I am going to tell you what my dream MMORPG would be like.

First let me describe the setting.   It isn't fantasy, though magic is in it.   It would have swords..  It would have firearms.   It would have different species, though humans are the primary species, they are not alone.  It would have ships.   Starships to be exact or spaceships if that is your preferable tag for such a vessel.   No not the kind you see in Star Trek, but they would be starships, just different.   There would be planets one could visit and of course space stations and what not.   See where I am going with this....it would be set in the future and be basically a open ended, sandbox, sci-fi space opera MMORPG.   I will describe the various aspects of this game in detail as  I go through and describe my dream MMORPG...just bare with me...I have a lot to say.  

Second it would have true twitch, full blown FPS, type combat.   None of this spamming various hotkeys or mashing buttons in a certain sequence to perform X special move or shot.   I am so sick of these games that come out and tout how their combat system is unique and special and how much fun it is to play when in reality they are just rehashes upon rehashes of games that came before them.   Nope...not my dream MMORPG.   The ranged combat would be like playing Battlefield 2.   Yep, straight and simple.   I like BF2's ranged combat system...that is perfect for my dream game.   As for melee.   Yep, got an answer for that as well.   There was this single player game that was recently released called Mount & Blade.   That melee combat system from that game would "almost" be perfect for my dream MMORPG.   I would however change a few things, like adding a few extra forms of attack, plus it would have an unarmed combat system derived using the Mount & Blade melee combat system.   Melee combat would be kung fu in nature.  You know the proverbial kicks, punches and what not of that style of martial arts and the animations...the animations would be fluid - you'd think you were watching an anime.  Yep the combat in my MMORPG would be the best ever.  

Third, it would have a very unique art style to it.  It would be a 3D game, but look almost like a Japanese
anime, but OMG...the graphics would be awesome bar none.   I would spare no expense on how this game looked.   If you've ever seen the cinematics of the game Lineage II, well that is the kind of graphics detail and richness my game would have, but with an anime flair to it.  

From the clothing and armor to the very hairs of the characters, it would be unmatched in any game to date.  Clothing and armor would not be painted onto your character/avatar like a lot of other games.  Nope.  Not in my game.    Each piece of clothing, armor, jewelry, even the very hair on top of your characters head would behave like it does in the real world.  Real physics would be applied to this game so you'd see your characters hair move if it is standing in the wind, or get wet if it is in the rain.   Also no clipping here.   You know where cloths seem to not fit properly and or a shield slices through the back of your avatars head when you place a shield on their back.  Nope...not in my game.
 

Am I just dreaming?   Well of course I am silly, this is my dream MMORPG, but you know what, the tech is coming, and it won't be to long before this kind of graphics and physics can be applied to online games.   Every few months or so the vid cards with their gpus and the computers with their cpus exponentially get more and more powerful.   Less then 10 years ago we had 2D scroller games that were the rage.  Then came blocky 3D virtual worlds, and today some single player games we see on consoles and such are all ready showing what can be done with the new vid cards with their ultra fast gpu's capable of millions upon millions of calculations a second - look at games like Half-Life.    So very soon I believe we'll be seeing vid cards that are not 2 times faster or 10 times faster, but thousands of times faster than anything we've seen on the market to date.  Which will allow for my dream MMORPG's type of graphics to become a reality.

Star Trek - Latest Movie and What It Could Mean for Star Trek Online

On May 8th of 2009, Star Trek fans will once again go where no one has gone before and this time is no exception.  I dunno about the anyone else, but I for one am kinda looking forward to this step back in time to see the crew of the Enterprise in a new light - the beginning.   JJ Abrams, director/producer of such films/TV shows, as Cloverfield, Lost, Alias and many others is taking us back...back to the beginning of it all.   What will we find?  I think we'll all be in for a pleasant surprise, because from the looks of things that we've all ready seen in movie trailers, interviews, and such, he is doing his best to stay within the Star Trek universe as it was envisioned by Gene Roddenberry, yet making it look more up to date in the visual aspects.

After reading tons and tons of previews, interviews and getting my hands on every little scrap of info I can, it seems that all the characters we know and love are here again...like Dr. McCoy (Karl Urban), Lt. Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Spock (Zachary Quinto) , Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), Chekov (Anton Yelchin),  and yes Cpt.  James Tiberius Kirk (Chris Pine).   Of all the new people playing the parts of these well known names I understand just one Chris Pine kinda missed his mark when it comes to playing Cpt. Kirk.   Let's face it, Pine has some big shoes to fill when it comes to playing one of the best known sci-fi captains of TV and movies so whether this is true or not, I do not really know, I am only passing on what I have read elsewhere from people who have all ready had a look at the film.   As for the rest of the cast, it turns out that most of the others slip right into character as if they were born to play the parts - could this mean we could see a rebirth of the old, original show - just with new people playing the parts?   Now that might be pretty cool if you ask me.

I for one am seriously looking forward to seeing this new film.   It looks like it might be as exciting as the trailers make it look like it is going to be.

Now how does this movie even garner a spot in a blog that is geared toward MMORPG's?  Well, in the near future, we gamers will have the opportunity to play in a virtual Star Trek Universe online.   My question is, how will this movie impact the vibe about the game being developed by Cryptic Studios?  Will this movie help promote the online game and bring Trekkers to the online gaming genre, bringing yet more virgin gamers to our fold?  I think it might.   I think if this movie is as good as I think it is going to be, it might very well swell the ranks of online gamers by a couple hundred thousand...if Cryptic does their job right and delivers the kind of game we know they are capable of producing.  

Is this a good thing?

That depends.   Because what if Cryptic totally blows this?   This could set the genre back even further then it has all ready been set back by such flops as Age of Conan, Warhammer and so many others.   Cryptic is going to have to do their homework about why these games failed miserably, and then try to avoid the same mistakes that Funcom, Mythic and others made with their games.  Star Trek is a huge franchise, with very fanatic and die-hard fans.   If Cryptic fails to deliver what the fans of this IP expect...it could really hurt the MMORPG genre and make it harder for others to obtain funding in the future for the development of other MMORPG's...and I seriously doubt if gamers of this genre would like to see that happen.

If Cryptic succeeds, then the MMORPG genre gains more fans and it'll make it easier for future developers to get funding for their own projects.

So the ball is in Cryptic's court.   Now let's see what kind of serve they've really got.
