Reminiscing Star Wars Galaxies Pre-CU
After my First Impression review on Age of Armor, I find myself unsatisfied with the games on the market. I went to World of Warcraft, trialed it, quit it again. Guild Wars, can't even bring myself to play past Level 5. City of Heroes/Villians, it got old faster than the last time I got back to it.
I even tried some more free games. Exteel, Dungeon Runners, Perfect World... they just don't have that "quality" that keeps me playing.
Then, as I uninstalled all these games which I will not touch ever again, I suddenly started thinking of a game I've played a long, long time ago... which felt like home to me. Star Wars Galaxies.
I just moved to Perth at the time the game was released. It took me a few months to get the retail box as it kept selling out everywhere I went. At the college I was attending, I happen to have the fortune to meet a new friend who was fortunate enough to get the box at launch.
I loaded up my installation of SWG, paid for my subscription, and logged into a world unknown.
After creating my online persona, I met my friend in the city of Theed with a few of his other friends. They welcomed me to the game and invited me to their guild, and escorted me to the city they founded. We had no vehicles then, we had to leg it. Dodging agro mobs across grass and rivers was the first ever adventure for me.
A few weeks into the game, I start to get a feel for the scope of the game. I was grinding up the Teras Kasi Artist tree, while doing some medic work to build my template. Missions were interesting as there were so many people to play with. We would go on huge hunting groups and come back to a handsome credit payout. Then in the middle of the hunt, someone would throw up a camp for us to rest. We'd sit, talk and watch entertainers do their thing.
Then after reaching Master, I started a new persona to try out crafting. I looked at the profession list and was dumbfounded at the amount of professions for crafting. I took Tailor as it seemed interesting at the time. Calculating cost of maintaining harvesters, factories and shops, taking the time to talk to people about how they wanted their threads, even supplying a load of uniforms and custom ordered formal wears for a wedding function... it was just a really good time.
Thinking back to what Pre-CU was like really made me WANT it back. But it is obvious the powers-that-be will never reinstate the great game. Whats left is to hope and pray that the group of people trying to bring back a certain state of a certain game back to the community that yearns for it, pull through.
(Yes, this is pretty much a rant entry. For some reason, I just couldn't stop thinking of what I've done, acoomplished and socialized with back in the day. Seeing all these other MMOs in the market and their features just don't appeal to me anymore, even the new upcoming ones. I fear SWG Pre-CU was that good.)

wow. I played SWG when it was released and came back to it some time later to give it another go. I found it to be a totaly bad game made for fanboys.
That's My Opinion, but with all the MMO's out there your saying SWG is the best and most interesting?
I'm happy you found a Game that you likeand wish to stick with.
Looking at my first post it seems to come off as a flame.
Sorry, I was just stating that my time with SWG wasnt as enjoyable.
Sorry for the Flame
i baught swg the total experience which included jump to lightspeed and wrath of the wookies around 2004. and for almost a year before the nge came out i really enjoyed the depth that the game had to offer. i would love to see them reroll pre cu although i didnt experience it , i heard it was the golden age of the game. currently im playing wow and its starting to lose its flair. it has a ton of content but i like the simulation that swg offered and the whole sci fi atmosphere really apeals to me. the fact that u can have a ship and travle around from planet to planet and pvp on land and in space was just too much fun :). i am really keeping my fingers crossed that bioware will make KOTORmmo and try and incorporate some of the great and innovative aspects of swg
look up the swg emu, they are making some nice progress, been going for a long time but they are dedicated, there are like 3 emu projects going on i think, swgemu.com would be the one starting it i believe
I feel your same yearning for the Pre-cu. I got to experience it and it felt like a world not just another game, no other MMO on market even comes close to the experience from SWG Pre-cu. The social aspect of the game was the best, the community by far the greatest (in comparison to today's normal mmo allotment.), the sandbox of the game was so unique as well (TKM/Mdoc was my main template :P), and people usually were always friendly.
Now I have experienced many different MMOs all are pish-posh, no real communities, no social atmosphere, and it feels more like a grind (yes, you may argue that SWG Pre-cu was a grind, but in due respect it didn't feel that way to me...maybe cause I always had fun with friends etc FORT TUSKEN HOOOO!!!!!). The various games I have experienced since them are WoW EQ2 VG PS DDO and TR (Tabula Rasa is my current, really enjoy it just hope people don't ruin it and drive away the subs =_= it is fun Sci-fi is the best).
Anywho I am going to end it right there. Really hope that SWGemu pulls through or as what Riverflex says KOTORmmo with SWG Pre-cu features from Bioware.
Let it go man....
Just kidding, pre-cu FTW!!!!
I played just 11 months before the NGE hit. It was the golden age of the game. SOE's lack of vision of keeping legacy servers proved talented and disenfranchised players would begin to make the inevitable attempt of the SWGemu. I am pulling for them as well because if they are wildly successful, the swg refugees can return home, where they belong, and the balance in the forums will be restored once again. My only regret is seeing my toons languish on SOE's servers, disembodied, nerfed and without purpose.
How about picking up a Pre-cu private server and stop crying? It's getting on my nerve to hear people crying river about how good it was... WELL YOU STILL CAN EXPERIENCE THAT. DO IT AND NOW SHUT IT EVERYONE.
No Pre-CU private server exists, Ahnilator. What website made you think there was one? lol
Early on, the feature list for that game was insane. Amost every feature you could ever want in a sandbox style MMO. If someone could launch an MMO, with all of those features, and a good amount of polish, Id pay what ever the hell they wanted for a monthly sub...
