I wish....

If i could have a perfect online experiance with a game, i would have to make lots of changes. Warning : [may devolve into ranting]

Hi, first entry, so i am going to look at something that always depresses me about mmo's in general. I always find short paragraphs are easier to read, so while it may be long, i wont leave huge blocks of words mashed together.

Complaining : This is one of my personal pet hates, don't ask me why, i doubt i could be exact. People who play a mmo, decide to go onto a forum and let loose with everything that they dislike, they hate about a game,

For examaple, take WoW, good game, at least in my opinion, generally solid not too much to complain about in my opinion. A class gets nerfed slightly and you will have quite a significant number of people attacking whoever they can because it is unfair, it hurts them, etc... I have never been able to understand why people feel the need to vent their feelings over a forum like this, i can understand it if they make a calm, or rational complaint to whoever is in charge, or starting a discussion with other gamers about it, but now it seems, people feel the only way devs listen to them is to scream their heads off [figuratevely].

Another thing i have noticed is that people are getting less and less patient with games in development, and when a game is delayed, to make sure it is ready upon release, people take this even more badly.

People can wait 5 years for a game, when there is no release date, as soon as there is a release date, if it gets pushed back, all hell breaks loose and noone can wait the extra 2 months or whatever that is required to release the game properly.

With these things in mind, i thought up some guidelines which these "complainers" never think about before posting.

1. The game is not made solely for you, so just because something that has been made does not benefit you does not mean it is bad.

2. Adding lots of swear words and capital letters does not make you : more grown up, able to express your feelings better, sane

3. If you do not like a game being produced there is no need to say so, just dont buy the game, just because you were possibly, maybe thinking about buying the game, does not give you the right to criticise it if you havent tried it for a reasonable amount of time.

4. Just because you have bought and played the game does not give you the right to be an arse, you have paid for the game, so you have the right to an opinion about said game, but then so did many other people, and more often than not, the game will be changed however is best for the majority, as has been said before... if you dont like the changes, you can always quit, noone is forcing you to play.

 

This is mostly just for my benefit, because this has been annoying me for a long time, but if you read this and disagree... just remember.. you didnt have to read it, you didnt have to pay to read it... and read my guidelines before you add a comment :D

 Edit: Sorry but i just saw something which illustrates my point to insanity...  Some guy got into the beta for a game, downloading the client etc.. and found out he only had 2 weeks of play time... went off the rails, and started ranting.... if it didnt make you so depressed about the human race it would be slightly amusing i guess xD

It's generally an accentuation to immaturity; Ill take Guild Wars as an example. Recently, some changes to skills nerfed a skill named Splinter Weapon. naturally, many people kicked off about it, because they want to abuse the most powerful skill combinations possible with no care as to how imbalanced it is. It *should* make us become that little bit more tactical, as opposed to abusive, and walk off in a huff to find the next potentially overpowered skill to abuse. At the end of the day, we can only hope they will get some common sense and not smear their randomly accumulated hatred across forums. But for now, im just ignoring them as best I can :P

It's just therapy for bored gamers. It gets annoying, but it's why forums like this are here. Just overlook it or if you really want to stay happy and enjoy your game, don't visit it's forum on any site at all.

Developers shouldn't rush with the release dates. They should announce a release date only when the game is nearing completion or otherwise in the last stages of development. Because of the early announcements people get their hopes up and are eagerly waiting for the game. But when they hear it gots delayed by 6 months its a big setback. Some may disagree with me, but that's how I am feeling about delays.

See, if I say raiding ruins my MMO experience and 10 persons read it.  There is a slight chance, that it will improve a future game, so it doesn't break the game for peoples who doesn't want to raid.  It may never happen.  It may have no impact at all.  But, it MAY succeed.  There is a slight possibility that my "evil rants" will bring positive results (although some players or staff might be bruised by that, but considering I am bruised by the situation in the first place, I honestly don't care to bruise a bruiser).

 

So, this comes from a desire to improve the world, no matter how silly my methods are, and the chance it has any impact at all ever.  It MAY helps improve something, even if only by showing how much raiding is distateful to me and ruins my MMO experience, this will be a lessong well worth me posting 6500 messages and countless other feedbacks here and there.

 

Love is stronger then hate.  I LOOOOOVE games.  Raiding ruins MMO.  I will only quiet down when most games MMOs doesn't ruins the players experience with this flaw.  ATM there is only CoV which understand that point, and this is great and wonderful, but it is also fueling me to keep spreading the good news.  I don't have to convert everyone...if enough games understand that point so raiding doesn't ruins the MMO experience in most games, then I will go and play...or find something else to "improve".

 

Since my method is not efficient, I guess you will be doomed to see me more complaining about raiding and how it ruins my gaming experience.

 

Negative feedbacks is extremely potent when fueled by good intents to have a better gaming world.  It may be hard on some players/devs, but why would I feel bad since in the first place, this design is really bad on me (relatively spealing, only a game and my life is blessed if I can complain about it that much hehehe).

people like to win. in any competition, any perceived imbalance or disadvantage will be furiously opposed by those who report that they suffer under said imbalance/disadvantage.

Those who prosper from it will say everything is fine.

Also, good article. I agree that to many people complain to complain.  I think that coming to a forum and saying what you dont like can help other people decide on the game.  On that note, it is only helpful if people have a logical and well thought out point.

You see it more and more, Devs want to "work" with the guilds to develop the game. Heck they have special spots for guilds in the betas, etc.

Most of the way feedback in delivered into Devs tends to be quite dodgy, if you ask me. Be it via forum bitching, representatives they pick or the uber 1337 guilds.

Most people they listen to are very active in the game, which means they are either kids or adults with no life. These are usually the wrong people to give good unbiased input.

I think Devs should try to reach the older semi-casual gamers. They are usually mature and experienced people that tend to be able to understand the game very well. At least this is what I believe in, from my experience in dealing with players in other MMOs.
