It's my experience in the gaming world that people get bored very quickly with games, and very few of them have the strength to hold more then a few very active members, wow of course is one, a few other games such as Final Fantasy, everquest and lineage - but who else? guild wars is still a baby, Lotro isnt growing as quickly as people would like to beleive either, so what are we to do?
People, well almost everyone that plays mmo's have tried wow or one of the others mentioned, and either loved it or hated it, the people who loved it stuck with it - enjoying each momment of breathtaking graphics or just enjoing the conversion with other people that theyll never meet in real life, but what of those who hated it? they go around from game to game "warhammer yay!!!" "wow i cant wait for Aion to come out!!" " do you know if this is f2p? I cant wait!!" and then it goes down from there, "this game sucks, it cant compare to ***" so what? These kids are addicted, and so are a lot of people - but it's so unhealthy, and people quit everyday because of it, no one here who has played games for over 5 years can look at themselves and say "im happy with what games have made me into" you just cant, dont lie.
So with all this quitting and no one living up to par, what happens? what happens when wow dies because they impliment something that no one likes? When Lineage goes free to play because not enough people subscribe! when games like everquest and D .@. D go dead because the kid's with the wallets dont like to role play? what then? I need to know! We all need to know, what happens when gaming dies?
I hope you know

Thank you for fulfilling my daily requirement of total bull.
i'd respect your comment if you explained yourself, but your just another flamer, please quit forums and kill your computer with some acid
Gaming will not die because the gaming community is a self sustained and regenerating entitiy. As older generations quit younger generations begin so then it is only up to the developers to pick and choose content that is palattable to the current player base to keep the whole shebang going.
I'm old, many of us are. We are the ones who want more, who want to expand on our adventures. What you percieve as "gaming dying" is simply a cry from us old schoolers to advance our cause. The bulk of the gaming community however is alive and well and having a great time and will continue to do so until someone comes up with a better way for us to live out our fantasies.
If you look at gaming as a window in time like say, your ability to date 17 year old girls (legally of course) then you will understand why people are not happy when they have to move on. It is not dying though, we are.
On the bright side, there are other things we can go and do so don't get depressed from what I just said, just find yourself the equivalent of a hot 30 year old (which is still viable and accessable to all) in gaming form and keep rolling.
And try to have a nice day! :)
A couple choices if you stop playing MMORPGs because they get old to you or they ruin your life.
#1 Go buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360
#2 Go get a Girlfriend/Boyfriend
#3 Go Get a Social life and begin drinking more
#4 Find another hobby
Like most industries ,it seems like the mmo/gaming one is pretty cyclical.I'm in the midwest US and have seen the end of time, and the glory days of industries over and over. Most likely mmo's are just in a down cycle.
btw, The AMA just had a conference on if on-line gaming addiction is an illness. They decided at present to delay any decision in lieu of the massive amount of lawsuits vs the game companies it would cause.
I hear ya man. You shouldn't fear the 'end' of gaming for yourself. Realize that you may have wasted part of your life and move on and enjoy what's left. Socialize, be a part of your community, do something good for someone else. Or if you're not the socialite then take care of yourself spiritually. Gaming is entertaining, but it doesn't bring peace to your mind, body and soul, it just occupies you because everything else doesn't seem important.
Maybe end your MMO gaming and pick up some console gaming. It'll leave you with less of a 'hook'.
Maybe gaming doesn't need an end, maybe it can go on forever if played in moderation. Alot of MMOers play way too much to the point that it hinders their very life, whether they're in denial or not. Find some MMO's non-WOW like that you can actually get a good fix in 15 mins to an hour and enjoy the rest of your life doing real things.
I love gaming, I love computers, I hate gaming, I hate computers. When you realize how much life these machines suck out of you, you'd wish we weren't so attached to them. Don't let these things take over your life, be strong, the end of gaming is not the end of your life, but probably the beginning of a better one.
It's late i'm prolly blabbing , hope it's coherant.
I hate how time spent playing games is always displayed in a negative manner. Years later, people still seem to look down somewhat on gaming. How is it any less a viable use of time than any other hobby? And is drinking yourself into a stupor every night really a more noble pursuit than staying at home and playing some games with some friends?
Lets face it, if you're working a steady job and don't have more money than god, gaming is probably one of the more interesting things you can do with your time. More importantly, it should be noted that its also not the only thing you have to be doing with your time.
Just because you're gaming for a bunch of hours a week, doesn't mean you can't still go out, you can't still have a relationship, it doesn't limit you from doing anything. Gaming only becomes a "problem" or "addiction" when you lose sight of all that, and generally people that allow that to happen, have bigger problems that they're looking to avoid.
Gaming is not a negative. It's not a vice. It's no more a waste of time than reading a book. Gaming is what you make it.
Jesad, Kordesh - great posts!
Not much to add to this. Im exactly at the same point in life. Gamed RPG's, boardgames and PC stuff for some 30 years (no, not PC ofc) and Im not going to quit any time soon. And I am one of those looking for more in this place then currently offered.
regards
Heh, what have gaming made me into? Well one thing for sure, is my better english as well as skills in communication! The ability to organize events! The knowledge that we are all different! The joy of actually having used your brain instead of watching the god damn telly! Getting a network of real people (EVE as well as WoW)!
What has gaming made me into? Well it has certainly made me into more than drinking myself into a stupor every saturday night, watching the telly, or playing with a god damn barbie doll or action man! LOL
Of course there are people that cant control the amount of time they use on gaming, people that are online 50 hours a week. But must actually have a life besides gaming! I have played computer games for the last 20 years, MMOs for the last 10 years. I have been there, living with a friend, being online 50 hours a week. I moved on. Today I am an engineer, have my own house, wife (that does not play games on PCs), soon a child... Lots of money... a great network... Hmm... I wonder what gaming has made me?? I have had a lot of fun, and still have! And probably will forever.. Its all about learning that you have to stand up and take control of your own life - noone else will do it for you!
I switch games faster than I switch coats during the season. I've tried nearly all of what you list and many more in other genres as well. I have a small group of dedicated friends who move around with me (not all at the same time and I'm not always first). We don't use the GAME itself as our social network, but we maintain our social network through other means (IM, Ventrilo, BBS, etc.). We're friends and switching games and trying new stuff is just part of life.
Would you want to eat Pork Chops, Mashed Potatoes and green beans every single day of your life? Nobody wants to eat the same meal all the time. It is my right and, quite frankly, my responsibility to keep trying new things and keep my hobby fresh and appealing.
The gaming industry is far from dying. It is highly competitive and the bar is continually being set higher and higher for the quality and inventiveness in the gaming experience. When one doesn't meet standards we move on and try new things.
Besides! It's fun to be a demo/beta fiend!
Yay! I found something to depress me! oh wait... depressing articles are everywhere. Where can I find something that doesn't have "The world of <insert> is coming to an end, boo hoo" written all over it?
I think your missing the point,
My point is that the bar let's say is set at 7, but the only game to reach a 7 at this point is WoW, and every game that comes out get's bashed for trying to reach 7, making game's try to be like WoW, which will never happen - so what happens when people quit trying?
i guess that was my real question
Sorry for a second post, but seriously, stop trying to make people as miserable as you are. If you do not enjoy gaming, why do it? I'm one of the rare individuals that didn't become addicted to WoW. I didn't hate it, but I honestly didn't see anything special about it. The graphics and grind were just not worth 15$ a month to me.
Well for one I don't make excuses for who or what I am today. i don't blame games or tv or anything else because of what i have become , that in itself is a load of crap. Everyone out there decides for themselves weather they are going to succeed or not. Games, tv, music.. these do not decide for us. To blame something or someone else for what you have become is just looking for something else to pass the buck to. So you are quite wrong games and such do not decide for us what were are or become. We decide that with our choices. I personally love games.. I'm very happy with my life. There are things I would change yes. However I know who is responsible for me being what I am, and that person is me and me alone.
If you try to blame anything other than yourself for who you are...You're just kidding yourself.
im not miserable, im actually pretty happy- you like a few other people are missing the point, but look at your own post please -- your complaining yourself, so who is the real person that's miserable?
and to raven, omfg read the damn blog first, no one is making excuses for who they are, if your going to read tidbits and scim through quit forums
Gaming never dies. It just changes forms. I have been playing RPGs for almost 30yrs. Pen and paper gave way to stand alone PC games like Wizardry which in turn gave way to MUDs and now to the modern MMO. They are all a drug. You're always trying to regain that "high" you got from the first great experience you had.
The problem is they always loose their luster, but someone is always making something new...so you try it, you like it and play for a bit then...repeat as necessary.
I doubt gaming will ever die out, it just morphs into something else and we rush out to spend our hard earned cash on it.
Find Jesus!
What game is he playing?
@Iatan, huh?
There are more subscribers to WoW than there are residents of most US states. Gaming now makes more money than movies, music, and books *combined*. Although I enjoyed your article, I think sounding gaming's death knell may be a bit premature...
simkyn, youve captured my post: thanks
well most of thies posts have somewhat summerized what ive thought but there is still one thing mmos havent done whitch makes me think Its Not Over Till The Fat lady Sings. ive yet to see a MMORTS or one with significan support. i think it would be verry sucsessfull. think of CNC3 mmo or Suprime commander MMO tell me that im wrong.
Kenny3000---
The problem with an MMORTS idea is the "Real Time" aspect. Most people (I would say the largest part of the MMO population) are not hard core players. Hard core players may make the most vocal aspect of the populace, but I seriously have doubts that they are the largest part.
Real Time Strategy cannot be maintained in an MMO setting because nobody has that kind of time.
That being said. You should see the "crafting" system in Burning Sea. NDA prevents me from going into detail, but it's not crafting, per se... it's more... industry... resource management and marketing. It may intrigue you greatly.
I might be totally wrong but it sounds like you (the person who wrote this article) are afraid of "wasting" time playing a game for fear of it dying population wise or just because the company who made it implements a bad patch. This is a legitimate fear and one that I share with you. In the end I try to remember that if I'm having fun playing the game then I should enjoy it for what it's worth at the moment and not let my fears get the best of me.
As far as the game/gaming ruining you as a person, too much of anything is a bad thing, and if you can't control yourself and limit your gaming to healthy amount (however much that may be for you) then you will suffer in the end.
