Good Gamers have no Life

Or so the masses would have you assume no life.

Everyone knows what i am talking about, if you have skill in a game or any sort of reputation in a game flames from across the chess board spill into your chat boss in a nice whisper color tone..

"You have no life otherwise you wouldnt have *** " or "you only won cuz you sit in your char 24/7 "

What is the demanding factor that states one has to have no social life, or sit in their chair literally every second of every day - it's rubbish and gets old.

To get good gear you must: Run Hard dungeons

To be good in pvp you must: Know your class

To be a good gamer you must: Have no life?

It just doesnt fit, what's the point of insulting someone's entire life, declaring it revolves around a video game, just because with whatever online time they have - they choose to do some beneficial of their character with it?

Just a bit of a rant i guess, just bugs me that people think it's "be good at a game or have a social life"

Thanks for reading..

Agreed and to further this point.  Who gets to choose what "having a life" means?

I know I have no life.  I go to work I come home.  Next day, rinse repeat.  Its the staple of life itself.  The "no life" people are talking about in the gaming world are those that sit at the computer for 12+ hours a day playing a game.  These people generally have no job, live at home, or are milking the government because they are too damn lazy to get a job.

The problem with mmos is that people equate player "skill" with "gear."  Who cares?  This genre has become far too reward centric.  BTW, a couple years ago I did the whole raid/progression/gear thing in WOW.  I fully admit I had no damn life when I was doing it.  Anyone who denies they don't have a life while being a hardcore raider (or pvp'er)...are lieing. =)

Why did you not have a "Life" because you did the whole raid/progression/gear thing?

Was raiding and playing WoW all you did? Did you eat, talk to friends, go to work, drive around, shop for food?  All that is having a life.

Each person needs to make up there own Mind as to what they want to call a "life" because your definition and my definition are not the same.  You had a life while playing WoW and raiding.

I have a life and I play on line games 20+ hours a week.  I know I have a life because I have friends, I have a job, I do other stuff then just sit and play games.

Its the exact same as success.  How do you define something that means different things to different people.

i think the real question here folks is... Can you be a hardcore gamer and have a "life"? Simply becuase for all those that sit at a computer desk for more then half the day EVERY day for weeks at a time, you can declare that yes they have no "life", but not that they are a hardcore gamer, they are gaming hardcore however, but that in turn does not make them so. For instance, its taken him a total of 2weeks to max lvl, get a good amount of raid gear etc. etc., for me the casual player, its taken me a good 2-3 months to max lvl and get the same decent amount of gear. In this case i find him and use the same combo over and over, slaying him each time for reasons that are merely calculable, depending on class, etc. Now ofcourse eventually he may try another strategy and kill me a few times as well but in the end i still OWNED HIS ASS! Who is more hardcore now!?!?! and oh look im just in time for the movie with me and my gf, while noob-tard is set to adventure for somthing that will prevent him from being slain as often again, and probably again over 3x that night....

But also in the statement "Practice makes perfect", in this cannot be had in an MMO honestly, becuase it just comes down to numbers.... in an FPS/Action game its just your strategy and skill period!

Having a life is a different experience to everyone. Personally I like my video games and chillin' with my friends. yet, some people would rather go get drunk and die in a car wreck. It's all rhetorical, really.

Because of state of society I guess...they think the more time you spend on a game automatically the better you are at it. Where as games such as WoW, gear is very important, so casuals can be good too if they have at least enough time to raid.

It's pretty obvious when someone online doesn't have a life, flipping out and saying you have no life because you beat them at a game is a pretty good clue.

To be honest one of the main things I think shows no life is being overly social, there's also people who randomly tell you their problems, or follow you around when you're on a girl character. I don't really think skill shows it much, unless the person obviously takes the game too seriously.

Also saying "Waah I have a life because I define it differently" is pretty lame. You might as well say you're not fat because you think 250 is thin.

I totally agree with both of those statements.  I\'m a mother of 3 teens, I definitely have a "life," but I enjoy PC gaming as my hobby, so....sue me??  O.o  STUPID.

Hmm, depends what one consider "having life". For some is getting drunk every night, for some going to parties at every single occasion (+eventually getting drunk), for some going to run or do some sport, for some working from morning to evening in office ... and for some playing games.

For me "having life" is when you are satisfied with whatever you are doing AND possibly you are not harming (to much) your health. If somebody sit in front of computer 12+ hours per day and does no physical activity ... he is having life, but he is also shortening it. I have always tried to balance all this, maybe for the first time in my life I got in problems because of WoW. Was the first game to which I was really addicted for about one full year. Lol.:-)

But of course if you want to be good at something you must invest time in this. One can not be very good as i.e. surgeon or astronaut or pilot without of great deal of time invested in its job. By this definition then all this people does not have live. Which is nonsense. But for sure some parts of life suffer if you invest too much in a single activity. Maybe family, friends, job, health, ... So for long term »having life« balance is key (imo). But there is usually always some main activity which can change through time.

I have work (for average 10 hours per day), I go to fitness or to run few days per week, kids grown up, my partner also very busy, have few good friends  .... and most of the rest of my free time I spend for gaming. For now and for about last 2 years. But there have been times in my life when for years and years I have been working for +16 hours per day and having a lot of fun (I’m computer programmer .. lol :-)). But also for years I have been involved a lot in sports doing three different sport activities very intensely. At some point I will change my priorities to something else and maybe in time return back to gaming for some time.

"Having no life" have different meanings, like spending countless hours working to get a item in the game that really doesn't mean much in real life, when that time can be spent, well in real life doing things that  are progressive.

have no life can also mean sacrifying sociel life order to play a game. Like if your in a middle of a quest or something and one of your friends want to hang out, but u tell them your busy in order to keep playing. this i think is the worst from of the gaming desease.

i used to be like that in middle school when final fantasy 11 just came out. but change gradually occur doing highschool. It come to the point where i really don't care. i would just leave my computer if some friends call me up. Most of time i would leave a quick bye message and log off, or just log out, but some time i would get too excited about some thing and leave my character afk. and usually my party member will get me kill some how :D and when i do log back on everyone will send me negative messages. i would explain what happen and when they don;t believe me, i just tell them to go f*** themself or something to that degree :D

I think games are meant to play during ur free time, and some do have 12+ of free time each day but free time can also be use to do other activities, and having no life is when u use up every minute of that 12+ hours of free time

I am still waiting for the incrediable mmorpg game, but i have become more and more causual over the years. infact i have gone beyond causual,  that why i can;t keep interest in any mmorpg that is current out.

people who are on the top ten rank of any mmo are usually the most familiar type of no life that are fat (opitonal :D ) stays in his mother basement 24/7 and plays the games so much that it causes mental and physical harm to the person.

there a different being good in a mmorpg and being the best :P
