This may be a personal gripe with today’s newer MMORPGs, but I am tired of MMO companies thinking they need to make everyone who plays their game a "winner". I am a true believer that not everyone needs a trophy and sometimes you need to be told you aren't very good at something.
Examples: Champion's Online - You are thrown into a mess and everyone pretends like you are the savior of the city, lets ignore the 40 other 'saviors of the city' who are doing the same thing you are . . . as long as you feel special.
Example: Fallen Earth - You are thrown into a mess and everyone pretends like you are the savior of the city. Sorry, same example . . . but it's not far from the truth.
MMO's are not single player games and you aren't supposed to be a superstar unless you've earned it. Nothing makes me quit a game faster than having rewards and crap thrown at me like I’m a 3 year old who won’t eat his vegetables unless he gets ice cream. I even checked out EQ2's trial yesterday and the first thing I see when I log on is "If you reach level 14 by the end of this trial, you get a title!" so I logged off. I've accepted that MMOs have become progressively easier and anyone with a mouse and keyboard can reach max level, the evidence is very obvious in WoW, but I simply don't think I can accept this new genre of baby fed stardom MMOs.
When I played my first MMO (EverQuest1), I didn't need to be told where to go or what to do and there was no divine reason for me existing. I found some rats and started killing them. I realized their pelts could make armor and so I made armor. I did not see a big golden (!) and no one told me exactly where to get everything I needed. The new system of quest leveling & massive tutorials has generated games with absolutely no learning curve . . . MMO’s are now chores with graphics and people eat it up because they are fed rewards like children. There are no penalties for death and auto attack is ample for killing any NPC, even if the game has given you 40+ abilities. It’s sad to see games that are supposed to be about exploration and adventure turn into linear gaming experiences. When I play an MMO, I want a sandbox and some abilities. . . I’ll create the quests, I’ll have my own adventures, and I’ll learn the hard way that the named mob can kill me. When I’m strong enough to kill him, I’ll feel like I’ve accomplished something.
To make a long blog post short: Please, stop treating people like babies and making sure everyone feels like a winner. Not everyone is a winner and no one deserves a reward for “logging in” or praise for completing a tutorial.
