Mindless banter about MMORPG's and any other game I feel like talking about.

Age of Conan Beta Event Explodes

So for many of the IGN/Fileplanet beta participants it has been a very long day of blue screens and pretty severe bugs that like to eat your system. These mean little buggers like to crash you out and then totally bjork your video drivers, make you restart everytime the game crashes cause you can't even attempt to run anything after that, or plain just freeze up on ya.

The bugs are very wide spread and pretty categorical...all-in-all I got about 30 mins of playing time in betweeen the BSOD and the other miscellaneaous errors and then they all returned for what appears to be no appearent reason.

The time I did spend in the game was pretty cool but like I said very short. I covered the specifics in the post here if anyone is interested but thats about the long and short of it. If you want to check out the full cryfest then just hit the official forrums can't miss it lol.

Go Funcom get us a build we can play....we have faith!

99% completed it seems. ;)

Hope it gets working though, looking forward to reading about it.

Well it's a beta... this why they are testing apparently some hardware and / or software/driver combination causes crashes.

Less bitching and more sending in crash reports.

I know what a beta is. I'm referring to the hordes of fanbois who said "it's not really a beta, it's a paid trial / preview" and insisted the game was 99% complete and ready for release.

The AOC forums have exploded with people announcing the Doom of AOC and how they are cancelling their preorders.

It seems very little constructive help is going on and more "sky is falling" propaganda is being spread.

....Lol then let them cancel their preorders...not the kind of person I personally would like to play with.  What game is absolutely perfect BEFORE launch?...I mean alot of games still have various bugs post-launch thus why there is a support channel/section in games.  This beta is like they have announced, and like every beta.  They want to see how many ppl are going to flood the servers, what their capacities are, and how to make the game run as smoothly as possible.

My experience so far has been completely different. Other than some lag in the City, I haven't had any glitches or seen any noticeable bugs. Granted I have only played for about 5 hours but everything seemed smooth to me.

The only issues I've had are jump bugs when getting ready to fight stuff. Things seem to teleport right on top of me and I lag then usually die.

The biggest problem I have is the fact that every time I try to log out, the game "crashes" or it freezes up my computer and I have to reboot. Obviously it's in beta right now, but hopefully that doesn't carry over into the final game.

I'm not here to bitch or moan.  I have beta tested several mmo's before, and the point is obviously to put in some work and find issues that can be rectified prior to launch.  However, the way Funcom has marketed this "beta" adds to the misconception of a lot of those who have never beta'ed a game before and think this is a trial or preview that they payed for.

The choice to require a payed FilePlanet account (when it would have been easier and much more effective to release the open beta client as a torrent) was a mistake leading a lot of these ill-informed people who thought they were actually getting something for their money.  Not 3 minutes of intermittent gameplay at a time before a crash.  The message you get upon loading the game prior to getting inside it does a very poor job of presenting the point of this open beta also :

"Welcome Fellow Traveler! Welcome on your first step from the light, into the Dusk!  Step into the brutal, savage and sexy Hyborian Universe.  Feast your senses on what we hope will be a truly remarkable journey.  What you will experience now are all twelve classes, and the first 13 levels of the game!  In addition to that, please use the PvP match-making system to do as much minigame PvP as much as your heart desires." (and that was their poor wording in the last sentence, not mine)

it continues on...

"Some words of caution!  Age of Conan is unlike any MMOG you have ever tried.  It is faster, more hands on and requires you to learn some new skills...." etc.

Instead of giving false hopes of an actual gameplay experience, they should have said something more along the lines of:

Welcome to the stress test!  Your computer will crash often, your fps in the central hub city of the beta will be countable on your hands, the choppiness will be rivaled by no game you have played, and you will get frustrated as hell.  But hey, thats the point of a stress test and beta, to work out the kinks before release.  So endure it to help us make a better product, or stfu and play something else 2 months post release when it runs smoother.

I dont think all the problems are the testers fault, because Funcom chose to market this like it was a payed trial of the game.  In many ways it is their fuck up.  But even for those who have beta tested before, this game runs like absolute garbage currently.  The only MMO I've seen to date with this severe of problems so close to launch was Vanguard.   And Vanguards was still prematurely released to meet deadlines, just as AoC will be.  It is 15 days before servers go live, there is no chance in hell these issues will be fixed by then.  Testers cannot even stay logged in long enough to report bugs within the game beyond choppy graphics, instability that shouldn't be this bad in alpha, and just a fucking poor overall beta model.  Don't hold your breath on this one, folks not in beta.  Didn't we learn anything from Vanguard?

Sounds like there's a wide variety of technical experiences from the beta testers.  Personally, I am somewhere in between.  My system meets the recommended specs, but with low settings and shadows off the game is still barely playable.  I don't get some of the issues others have reporter here but I do crash every hour or two.
