Pod Cast!

I am an old school gamer in the deepest meaning of the word, I am also a true fan of EVE Online. This blog will be where I will expound on my thoughts about EVE.

With all the talk of how new player cannot contribute I started a new character to prove everyone wrong and succeeded when a 4 day old character played a major role in a 0.0 space mining operation.

Now while Kletus accomplished his task he also started something else me in, a fun way to play. Kletus is not your typical gun hungry, kill my enemies type of character. Kletus is a simple, laid back guy that wants to see the universe, haul some cargo and make some ISK on the way.

When I started Kletus I used my main character to give him a little seed money to get him roling. Kletus will have to pay it back of course and he intends to with interest.

I am having so much fun with Kletus that I started a blog dedicated to his experiences. The blog will see near daily posts and has some interesting pictures in it as well. If you want to follow Kletus' adventures be sure to come on over and check it out, subscribe to the RSS feed if you wish to be sure you are up to date.

Yes this is shameless plug, but still fun. BTW if you see Kletus in space give him a yell out, or if you need hauling work done let him know, he is for hire.

Doubt I need to say more.

Madness I guess I should have been more clear, the bump I gave him was about 3 million ISK, which is a very minor bump. The reason I did this was Kletus is did no mission running. Oh he did the very basics but that is it.

I could have done some mission running and had no need for the bump but wanted to explore the world of trade more deeply so I gave him the bump to get a bit deeper a bit faster.

This however in NO WAY efect his ability to be productive so quickly. He would have done just as well and been just as useful at 4 days as he was even if I had not seeded him for the trading.

My point was that, if you wish to play as a new player, you must do everything like a new player :þ In other words, starting from scratch.

Beside, you already had experienced EVE already so you pretty much knew where you were going.

To know when a game allows new players to play an important job in the game even upon creation of his character, a player must join a game with no knowledge of the game aside from what you may see on the website or hear from other players. Only then can we determine wether or not new players can contribute to the game.

You see your premise is not correct you are judging if a new player has the ability to contribute based on the skill, knowledge and general attitude of the player. My point is the game mechanics are such that even a beginner has the ability to contribute.

Of course there are players that will not contribute early on, but that is becuase of play style and attitude as much as anything else, in many of those cases even with the knowledge I have they would not contribute.

I do agree that for new players EVE is a bit overwhelming, it is a game that requires a lot of self motivation and determination. However I still stand by the premuse that the game is not as noob harsh as people say if the noob wants to learn the ropes quickly.

As for the starter money, if I had not given it to Kletus he would have had to run a few more missions to get a couple of skill books. At no point did the money really  did little in the way of help. By just doing some mining or mission running he could have easily made the needed funds the the training time would have been the same.

In fact the base skills I used for the mining op where actually all done and learned half way through day 3.  So in three days time a pilot can get into a good hauler and be of use. The same pilot BTW can also become a tackler, EW pilot, miner or just a mission runner that is able to do well at the chosen profession.

True he is not as good as a pilot with more epxerience but then again he should not be.

You seem to have missed my point. What I meant is that players will take more time to play a game they've tried for the first time. It takes days and for some weeks to understand the mechanics of some games.

I'm not saying it is impossible for a new player to join a game and do a decent job, but they will obviously take more time to learn about the game and their surrounding, dangerous zones and safe zones, what they can do and can't do. You already knew these. That's what my point was.
