|The odds are against PlayStation 3-to-PC cross-platform play for Sony Online Entertainment’s upcoming spy MMO, The Agency, CEO John Smedley tells Next-Gen.|
|“If I was a betting man, I’d bet that we don’t allow it,” said Smedley of cross-platform play. “You’ll still be able to log in with your character on either [PS3 or PC].”
SOE still plans on giving cross-platform play a shot, but the shooter mechanics of The Agency make for a tough translation between a console’s controller and a PC’s mouse and keyboard setup.
“We’re going to start play-testing that soon, but I’ll be honest: I think that our expectations are that we’re going to decide that we won’t have cross-platform play, simply because of the difference in [control schemes]. Would the mouse player have a unique advantage? Would we have to make the auto-aiming system on the console a lot better to compensate for that? That would take some of the skill element away on the console.
“I’m guessing it’s going to be where you can log into your character on either platform, but they don’t cross-play. But we are honestly going to give it a try.”
Cross-platform play between PCs and consoles is a novel idea, but has proven to be a tough challenge for developers, with few game makers attempting to implement the feature. (Shadowrun from Microsoft's defunct FASA Interactive had some success with PC-to-Xbox 360 cross-play.)
Major MMO company NCsoft also expressed its apprehension towards cross-platform games in a recent Next-Gen interview.
"...Personally, I don’t really believe that you could build a top notch game play that really works across platforms," said NCsoft North America boss Chris Chung.
Next-Gen will have more about The Agency and SOE’s plans from our interview with Smedley in the coming days.
too bad My guess is that the DC universe will not be cross platform as well.
