In case you have not heard...

LOTRO is going F2P...

Now...for the haters out there, or those who simply have never played LOTRO, this may not seem like a big deal...It is though...It REALLY is...

Like most of you here I'm a MMO junkie...It all started with SWG some 7 years ago...After the NGE I bounced to Vanguard, then EQII, then LOTRO, I Beta tested Gods and Heroes, then AoC, back to SWG, back to LOTRO...Even tried to like STO (I really tried...lol)...You get the picture...I LOVE MMO's...

In my travels through MMO Land with My Best Friend and I going from one Game to another, there is one thing we ALWAYS agree on...Overall LOTRO is the best MMO we've Played...It may not be perfect, but we're PvE Players, and LOTRO just about has it all...and then some...It's got a monster license in Lord Of The Rings, Great graphics that make you feel you're right there in Middle Earth, tons and tons of content (most of which has not cost anything additional...ie Forochel, Eregion, etc...)...The Classes are fun to play...The maps are real cool (the 1st time I went to the Misty Mountains I could not believe how awesome that Map was...I REALLY felt like I was in the Mountains))....There's the story line with the Epic Quests...Legendary  weapons...Moria...I could go on and on...It's a heck of a good Game...

So what exactly does it mean when a Game this good goes F2P? Well...for Me it means more Folks trying out LOTRO, loving it, and contributing to the Community...But on a larger scale I'm sure Producers around the world will be watching this closely...If LOTRO mirrors the success of the DDO turnaround and then some as I hope it will, Gaming Companies are going to have some REAL decisions to make. What about  a Game like Vanguard that has SO much to offer but almost no one Playing it? Would a Hybrid F2P spark that Community? What about SWG which has all but been run into the ground? I mean....Who in their right mind is going to pay $30-$45 a month just to have 4-6 toons on one SWG Server when they can play other Games for free? Would SOE of all Companies look at a F2P system now that Station Pass is really not much of a bargain any more? I can't imagine the conversation not coming up at SOE if LOTRO starts turning BIG numbers like DDO has...What about AoC?...A Game that has REALLY improved this past year but still has low Sub numbers overall...Will Funcom consider a F2P option?

LOTRO would have been fine without the F2P move. It was never going to set any Sub records like WOW, but it has a great, loyal Community...It was going to be around no matter what. So chances are if the F2P move works like Turbine thinks it will almost every Game out there is at least going to have to consider a F2P, or Hybrid F2P model...Or risk being left behind for good...

I think this is a GREAT time for MMO Gamers everywhere...The choices are getting better everyday...And the price of MMO Gaming is definitely becoming more affordable...I look forward to a lot more people getting on LOTRO in the Fall and checking it out for free...I think, like me, most Folks will find out it's a heck of a great Game...We'll see though...We'll see soon enough...
