Magicians in Midkemia Online; Demonology or Psionics.

August is almost at an end, the Artefact discount and EXP bonuses will soon come to an end. Who knows what September will bring in the way of promotions but I am excited to find out on September the first. Today I will be talking about the two specializations open to the Magician class in Midkemia Online.

The two choices open to the Mage are Demonology, the summoning and controlling of demons from the fifth level of Hell and has a mix of offensive and defensive capabilities. Whilst the Demonologists may not be viewed kindly by others it is still a great skillset and provides ample opportunity for roleplay. The Psionics mages are taught by the Mistress Elliandre of Stardock and while the Skillset is looked upon a better light by others, those who learn it who aren’t members of Stardock will not see the same benefits as those who are.

Demonology Mages are viewed differently by the three main cities of Midkemia Online. Sar-Sargoth, the home of the Dark Brotherhood have no issues with Warlocks within the city which means that the Warlocks of Sar-Sargoth are free to practice their arts wherever they choose. Those of the city of Krondor mostly view the art as unsavoury but they allow its citizens to practice the art in a designated location in the city for general use or openly in times of city defence. Elvandar has the least amount of love for the Demons summoned by Warlocks and those Magicians of Elvandar are encouraged to either take up Psionics or if they do take up Demonology they are refrained from even bringing the demons within the city boundary. The only exception to this is with permission from an Elder during times of defence. Elvandar officials have even tried to outlaw the practice in the past but this ruling has never gained enough support due to the potential loss of able mages to defend the city from other Warlocks. Warlock Magicians can call upon a number of different demons for PVP and also have a little utility such as commanding an Imp to deliver mail, summoning a lurker to trap hidden foes, using a darkhound to lead you to a person and even sacrificing demons for buffs which can be used while hunting. Demonology adds tremendous benefits to the mage for PVP but as a result when a Warlock has an active demon his magic reserves take a small debuff to counter this.

The Psionic mages are primarily taught in Stardock, the academy of Magicians on Great Star Lake. While Elvandar do not allow citizens to become members of Stardock, they do allow their mages to travel there to learn. The mages who learn Psionics who are not of Stardock get a longer balance for their Psionic attacks but can still learn the skillset fully. Psionics is a fast and unblockable skillset which can be used with devastating effect against foes as it allows affliction combos to be easily stacked. When coupled with certain arcana skills the Psionics mage will really shine through and will become a hard person to take down. Psionics mages are also able to amplify certain areas of their brain which give great buffs to stats or add defences such as stun immunity.

Either way, whichever skillset you choose to take as a mage you will become a force all your own as you quickly and efficiently wear your opponent down with clever combos and fast thinking. Today I will be writing a breakdown on the skillsets that are used by the Magicians in Midkemia Online, a fast paced roleplaying game produced by the king of MUD games Iron Realms.

The magicians of Midkemia Online combine the arts of Thaumaturgy (Manipulation of the Elements Earth, Air, Water and Fire along with the weather) and Arcana (The use and manipulation of Arcane magic.) With devastating results.

Magicians as a class are capable of using a number of stat breakdowns, whilst this is true for all classes to a certain extent. The mage has the most diverse stat options of them all.

How Stats Work for a Magician:

Strength: Affects magical damage dealt.

Intelligence: Determines your maximum Magic and the rate at which you regenerate Magic.

Willpower:    Determines the precision of your magic-based attacks, which is their ability to ignore an enemy's defence, and the rate at which fleelag builds (see the Fighting skill Flee)

Dexterity: Determines your maximum Endurance, and the speed at which you can cast spells.

Constitution: Determines your maximum Health.

Sample Stat Builds for Magician:

Intelligence and Strength: This is the stat setup mostly used by the Magician, especially true for Novices. Intelligence gives a large magic pool which regenerates quickly and strength makes the attacks hard hitting. Whilst not the fastest build it gives the most survivability. The Int/Str mage has almost no Health but with the skill of Spellshield, an early defence in Arcana you can use your magic pool to absorb all damage taken at an equal loss of Magic but since the pool regenerates so quickly and the healing skill Overdrive used by all classes can be used to heal magic this build has more damage soaking than a build with constitution would.

Constitution and Dexterity: This build uses constitution for survivability and relies on fast attacks to quickly wear down the opponent and finish him quickly. This works really well for 1v1 PvP but has a moderate downtime between fights when bashing and you may struggle to stay alive when fighting a group.

Strength and Willpower: This build is only suitable for PVP and will hit your opponent really hard and make them struggle to defend against your attacks which will cause a fast build up of afflictions on your enemy which will disable their offense and allow you to finish them off.

Magician Skillsets.

Thaumaturgy: Thaumaturgy is the primary offensive skillset for the magician and can be used to quickly stack afflictions and cause damage to your enemy whilst also providing a few defensive abilities such as windweave and levitation. Windweave adds armor to the mage and levitate allows the mage to float over water which is a big bonus when fighting on water or in a flooded environment. With this skillset a Mage will ignite their foe on fire to cause burns and damage ticks whilst simultaneously chilling the core of their being to slow defences and allow bones to be shattered to hinder offense and defence. The main damage attack is stormlance, which builds stormfury charges that power up the next attack from the thaumaturgy skill to do increased damage. The final skill in this tree is Immolate which will cause the burns caused by Ignite to flare up and consume the body in flames doing mega damage.

Arcana is mainly a utility skill, though the utility enhances and compliments the other skillsets and adds some offence as well. Arcana allows you to create a mirror image, which will take an attack in your place but be destroyed in doing so which will negate the first attack done to you after it has been cast. You can cast convincing illusions to trick your opponent into reacting to an attack that does not exist, with some clever use you can cause the player to panic and react as if a devastating attack is coming which opens them up for an onslaught. There are various time based attacks in this skillset that can speed you up, slow the opponent or indeed the all those in the room. Couple this with the ability to form a singularity of power drawing all adjacent enemies into the room and even set it to explode. Eldritch barrage is an instant, high damage attack that can affect multiple enemies in the room as well as the target and then at the Transcendant level you get the ability to cast rifts to any location you have memorized in the whole of MKO and return there at will in an instant. Arcana also has many abilities that hinder and affect rogues which makes them a must in any organisation.

Out of all the classes in Midkemia Online, the Mage is the one I have played the most and always go back to. The RP opportunities being a Mage present are endless and the skillset is amazing. Brutes and Swordmasters; A Soldiers specialty in Midkemia Online.

MUD games, for me are a very rewarding type of game where there are no restraints put on your character and roleplay is everywhere and player driven. You will never find the immersion that comes with playing a MUD game in any other type of game and the multitude of things you can do are almost endless. My current series of Blog which focuses mainly on my MUD game of choice, and for me what is the best MMORPG 2012 which is Midkemia Online, produced by the King of MUD producers, The Iron Realms.

Combat can be very challenging and rewarding in a MUD, the multitude of classes, skillsets and defenses along with the numerous ways to combine said skills into tactics for combat makes for fantastic PVP. Readers of my Blog will know I am currently showcasing the different skillsets open to each class and today I will be looking at the Specialization skills offered by the Soldier class. See previous entries for the Rogue and Rogue specials followed by the primary skillsets of the Soldier.

The most used Specialization for the Soldiers of Midkemia is Brutality. The reason I say it is the most used however is not due to the superiority of the skillset but the restricted nature of the second specialization open to soldiers.

Obliterate is a damaging soldier skill that increases in power the more adrenaline the soldier has, A Brutal soldier has little trouble in gaining Adrenaline in combat.

Brutality is the combination of brutal strikes and debilitating roars which build up physical afflictions on the opponent, stunning them and breaking bones whilst draining their adrenaline thus further debilitating them in battle. Brutality is named for the nature of its attacks which when coupled with the primary skillset of a Soldier can cause a great deal of damage while building up the afflictions needed for one of the soldiers many ways of finishing a melee. While a very effective skillset though, it is a little lacking in the Roleplay utility that comes with Swordmastery though from a skill mechanic point of view it makes up for this by not having the upkeep associated with the Growing and Protecting of a Great Tree to power attacks. Said magic power being limited in how much can be stored in the blade per day.

The second specialization currently open to the Soldier is Swordmastery. Swordmastery is the ancient art of the Queensguard Eledhel and is taught deep within the forests of Elvandar. The Eledhel are very protective of this skillset and as a result only one person not of Elvandar or allied with the Eledhel have managed to gain access to the skillset due to the manner in which it is taught.

Swordmastery combines the Eledhel nature magic and great trees with a Greatsword imbued with the power of the Forest to deliver unrelenting attacks of great power to beat down the opponent whilst drawing power from the greatsword to simultaneously unleash magical attacks on their foe. The Skillset as a whole is very RP driven for the Eledhel and allows the Swordsmaster to blend in with the trees, rendering him or herself invisible and then using a skill called Windsong Dance they are able to instantly flow to any other person within the same forest environment as themselves to either aid an ally or intercept a foe. The power utilized by the Swordmaster is drawn from a bonded great tree in the Forest of Elvandar which generates magic over time which can be infused into the Swordmasters Greatsword. The tending of the trees and the planting and bonding is provided by the Spellweavers guild in Elvandar and promotes cross guild Roleplay for the Eledhel involved.

One can’t say which of the two specializations are better as each skillset is balanced against the others to avoid OP classes. The great thing about PvP in Midkemia Online is that it mostly comes down to skill over level and a skilled player will generally win out over those less adept. So what are you waiting for?? The second class I will be looking at in my Class breakdown set will be the Soldier in the Iron Realms MUD Game Midkemia Online.

Soldiers in MKO have two primary skillsets to take advantage of. The first skillsets you will learn are Arms and Warcraft and these two combined will allow you to deliver brutal attacks and use quick defenses coupled with the ability to take huge amounts of damage through the use of plate armor, damage mitigation skills and passive bonuses amongst other cool abilities to make the soldier a truly needed addition to any raid and especially comes into his own during hunting groups.

The arms skill tree is where the soldier will find most of his offensive repertoire along with numerous defensive and aggressive bonuses. Basic combat allows the use of any of the multitude of weapons available in game and gives the appropriate skill to either slash or bash with it. The Arms soldier has many ways to increase his or her adrenaline and maintain it during combat for attacking, defending and curing. This skill tree also gives access to plate armor and shields for damage mitigation and defense which further ads to the soldiers tanking capabilities. You can build up debilitating afflictions and adrenaline reducing debuffs on your opponent with the skills in arms and a transcendant soldier has the opportunity to instantly end the fight if the opponent has less than 20% adrenaline left. To start off with, a soldier using Arms would either use a one handed weapon with a shield in the off-hand or a two handed weapon for increased accuracy/damage/speed (depending on weapon type). When a soldier has gained most of his skill ranks in arms he can dual wield single handed weapons and deliver an extra attack every few seconds to further beat down the opponent.

Warcraft is where the group utility and extra survivability comes into play. A soldier can turn his party into a Unit which has the added benefit of being able to keep the group together and avoid people getting left behind if off balance or from fleeing if suffering from fear using skills like forced march and stand ground. Stances provide extra speed, damage or defense and open up other tactics for combat and Skills like tenacity make it harder to force the soldier prone, immunity allows poisons to be shrugged off which further increase the survivability of the soldier. Where a Warcraft soldier really comes into his own is when taking players of lower levels hunting or into combat. They are able to intercept all attacks meant for another and also intimidate agro of a mob onto him at will thus allowing the lower levels to hunt where they would normally get destroyed. Some other skills that add to the ability to lead are Exhort which boosts the endurance of someone in the unit, rally which bolsters the endurance and adrenaline of all in the unit, berserking which allows you to bring down targets quicker and last stand which gives a bonus to damage and defending for a short a short time.

What Makes Midkemia Online the best MMORPG of 2012 are its unique nature and excellent classes and skillsets available along with a diverse player base and player driven events and roleplay. Bards and Thieves; A Rogues specialty in Midkemia Online.

My last Blog focused on the primary skillsets of the Rogue and the primary uses of such. Today I am going to be looking at the two Specializations open to the Rogue class though bear in mind you may only take ONE of these skillsets.

The first skill set I am going to look at is Thievery, which as you can probably guess turns you into a master thief in the world of Midkemia Online. The first skill in thievery allows the rogue access to the thieves’ highway, which in the lore of the books of the Riftwars by R.E.Feist is the name given to the Rooftops of towns and cities by the thieves’ guild. No other player asides from other thieves can gain access to this levitation, which allows you to bypass other players or city/town guards which may be on the ground below. Thievery also has the skill Pickpocket which allows you to pickpocket an item or coin from another player or NPC. Coupled with Snoop to see the inventory of denizens and players this skill can be used to make money very quickly. Whilst players have a number of skills available to protect themselves from being stolen from, a talented thief has the ability to strip said defenses from within the shadows where they hide. The thievery skillset also has hidden afflictions that can be whispered to other players without them realizing it which gives a very good head start on the ensuing combat. The thieves of Midkemia online really are to be feared. Some other utility for the thieves is the ability to sense incoming projectiles and avoid them, forge the seals on letters to send in game communication to others with the authentic seal of another player, graffiti on walls with inks and construct hidden bolt holes to escape into, which when constructed can lead between two rooms in different parts of the map. It is also possible to snipe from these bolt holes through the use of crossbows.

It is skillsets like these that really make me enjoy playing MUD games over other, more conventional no download mmorpg games. In no other type of game do you have the level of freedom offered by a MUD.

The next skillset I am going to talk about is performance, which when taken will make your rogue a Bard Rogue and is an excellent specialization for solo combat and even better in groups. The bard will enchant his fencing weapon into a song blade, which when used in combat will absorb cadence that will extend the duration of songs that the bard will play on his lute. A skilled bard is able to have three songs playing at once and can also play a dissonant note to remove or disrupt the songs of enemies playing nearby. The songs played by the bard have many effects, from passive bonuses to all listening, beneficial buffs to allies and malaise’s to enemy players. Some of the de-buffs include sleep inducing melodies, songs that increase bleeding and damage done and even fear and terror which can cause the enemy to become frozen to spot whilst simultaneously trying to flee which saps adrenaline. A skilled bard is an insane foe and someone to be careful of. Bards are also able to perform plays, songs and stories in tavern which grants experience to all those listening as well as the performer. A fun skill to use is a song of lust which causes all the enemies listening to fall in love with the singer which removes the bard from their enemy list which reduces the amount of skills able to affect him.

Midkemia Online has a vast combination of Skillsets across the four available classes and no matter which class you pick there are many different combinations of skills to customize your play style. Midkemia Online has to be the best free to play mmorpg out there.

Rogues in Midkemia Online; A Class Breakdown.

Rogues in Midkemia Online are a very versatile class and capable of fulfilling many roles through the utility offered in the various skillsets open to them.

A rogue starts the game with two distinct skill sets, Fencing and Subtlety. Fencing is where the Rogue gets the majority of his combat skills from along with a whole load of utility through buffs and passive abilities. Subtlety is a very powerful skill set which relies on cunning and guile, a skilled rogue using subtlety can essentially move about unmolested and gain access to pretty much anywhere in the game world without first having to bypass any guards, enemies or NPC denizens. Subtlety, while essentially filled with utility skills is not without essential and effective combat skills including the feared Hostage and Execute along with the ability to Deep-shroud which prevents other players from being able to see or even target you whilst you move around at will.

Fencing is the bread and butter of Rogue combat, Fencers wield a rapier, saber or longsword in their main hand and a dagger, poniard or similar in their off-hand. Fencers are quick to attack and have the ability to cause massive bleeding damage and stack movement hindering afflictions that can slow defensive and offensive equilibrium, slow and hinder movement and various other crippling skills. With enough lessons invested a fencer can increase their speed of attack, precision and damage passively through bonuses to weapon ratings which further boost the efficiency of a rogue. Fencing Rogues are also the only class who will automatically ready a parry to intercept incoming attacks on every hit which makes defending a little easier.

if you use Balestra to inflict Severed Nerves then you will increase the likelyhood of critical damage from bleeding which can be applied with fleche as seen above.

Possibly the most important skill in the fencing skillset when it comes to PvP is Envenomer, which allows all manner of poisons to be layered on the blades of the fencer to add extra afflictions to each attack. By layering certain combinations of poison the Rogue can tailor the offense to any situation. A good finisher for the skill set is Coup de Grace which will instantly kill your opponent when certain criteria are met.

Critical bleeds can drain the hp of denizens quite quickly allowing you to finish them quickly.

Subtlety is the skill set that most Rogues are known for in Midkemia Online. With subtlety you can hide in the shadows and move about unseen, though there are skills that others can employ to detect your presence at this stage of hiding it still lets you move about un-noticed for the best part. With hide comes sneak, this allows your movement between rooms to also go un-noticed and is another aspect of the hide skill. Whilst hidden you can stalk others silently which means they will not notice that you are following them. This is a good technique to gain access to places you are not normally allowed to enter, such as guild halls and temples. Beware who catches you inside mind, it might get ugly. Some of the other things you can do whilst hidden is pick things up from the ground such as loot and coin, before the person who rightfully earned said coin gets a chance, again, beware who you use this on as it could result in a fight if caught, but hey if we are sneaky enough, go for it.  Subtlety also has a few ambush style attacks to start a fight with an advantage. You can sneak up on someone and stab them in the back which gives you enough of a chance to start a decent offence before the other person even knows you are there or you can set up an ambush which will automatically backstab a personal enemy the instant they walk into the room.

Subtlety is not only about the hiding and sneaking though, oh no, it is much more than that. Subtlety also has a wide variety of bombs, fireworks and traps to confuse and disorient your enemies or even to make a hasty retreat. Couple this with access to crossbows and you really do become the master assassin. Where this skillset really comes into its own though is with the upper skills of the set. Infiltrate, Hostage and Deepshroud are all in the top tier of Subtlety along with Anatomic mastery. Infiltrate will allow you to listen in on a target players conversations from a distance and whilst subtlety has eavesdropping in the low tiers to listen in from a few rooms away, with infiltrate you get EVERY communication that person says or receives across all organizations, allowing you to find out what all other organizations are planning and getting tip offs as to potential attacks on your own organizations. Anatomic mastery gives an increased chance to cause more damage across all skills. Deepshroud is the most advanced form of hiding and whilst deep shrouded, no other player in the game apart from other deep shrouded rogues will ever know you are there and even if they did, there would be absolutely no way for them to target you with any attacks unless you initiate an attack yourself. Couple this skill with Hostage and you are able to grab hold of a victim and either steal an item from them or execute them outright with an insta-kill or even just torment them a little or hold them to ransom. The choice is yours.

Rogues also have access to two other skillsets or tertiaries to further the specialties of your character. I had planned on covering them here but I have written more than I had intended already for today. Check back in a day or two for the breakdown of Thievery and Performance.

For a new player or indeed a new character for those who already play, this means that it is very easy to work your way up through the levels to get your character stronger and accumulate lessons and credits to further advance your skills or purchase artefacts (Which coincidentally is linked to the second part of this month’s promotion which I will go into further along the Article).

There are a great many ways to earn Experience in the World of Midkemia Online and indeed in the other MUD Games produced the Iron Realms. Experience can be earned through Questing, Bashing/Hunting grounds, Exploring, Fishing, Listening to Bards telling Stories and by participating in World PVP Sieges which means you won't be far off in finding ways to take advantage of the accumulative experience bonus.

 

The second part of this month’s promotion is a discount on the prices of artefacts. Artefacts are purchased with an in game currency known as Credits.

Credits can be accumulated in three ways. The first way is by gaining levels. At levels 10, 15, 20 and 25 you gain 5 credits and then at 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 70 you gain a further 10 credits, all of which can be used towards buying artefacts or traded in for extra skill lessons. Credits can also be purchased on the in game credit market for gold which is acquired through bashing and questing. The third way is with real money from the Website and while it is convenient it is in no way compulsory.

For the Month of August, All Artefact purchases are subject to a 25% discount to the Credit cost which makes it the perfect opportunity to buy bonuses for your character.

So, you might be wondering, what is Midkemia Online and why would you want to play a game that exists entirely in text.

Midkemia Online is a fast paced roleplaying game of Epic proportions. The game is based on the Epic Riftwar Trilogy written by Raymond E Feist and set in the fictional world of Midkemia. There are three main City Organisations, eight unique guilds, a huge number of religious cults and sects and four specific classes each with a selection or tertiary skills to further customize the skills and abilities of each player.

The gameplay in Midkemia Online can be very different for every person that plays. The game world is so diverse and has so many options open to each and every player that no two characters will ever be the same. Thses are just some of the roles open to you as a player but bear in mind there are many many more things you can do.

Roleplay: Every player in Midkemia Online has his or her own history, backstory, personality and style. Every action taken in game is a form of Roleplay, whether talking to city or guild mates, hunting denizens of the world, killing enemy players or preaching the teachings of your religious orders. Everyone strives to stay in character at all times and there is always ample opportrunity for players stories to overlap, everyone contributing to the ever changing world that we all love to be a part of.

Hunting or Bashing: There are many areas to be found in Midkemia in which to quest or hunt for coin and experience. You can put your skills to use in the hunting and killing of Denizens or NPC's (Non Player Characters) and loads of new storys and lore to be found while doing so. This is a great way to earn coin and experience in order to level up your character.

Fishing: Some players enjoy taking time out to fish the many seas, lakes and rivers of Midkemia, seeking to catch bigger and rarer fish than their peers and earning a significant amount of coin and experience in the process. Fishing will also earn you credits at each skill level which can be used to purchase new skills or powerful artifacts to help your character.

Trader/Crafter: There are many tradeskills on offer in MKO, any of which can be learned by the players. Every item of clothing, every weapon, ever piece of armor and all poisons are created and designed by the player base. There are many who play out the parts of smiths, tailors, alchemist, tattooist or trader and there is much opportunity for roleplay and making gold for those who take this path.

The political structure of Sar-Sargoth

Politics: Every City, Guild and Order has a structure of leadership along with many ministries to ensure that the running of each organisation can be smooth. Every city has a Leader and a council of 5 elders/barons(esses) or praetors who serve the leader and overlook the various other ministries, such as the chancillor, ambassador, minister of security and many other positions aof political power, all of which are neccessary to the running of the city. There are similar positions held in every guild and order and every one of these positions are held by a player. It is these players who through political roleplay keep the games organisations interesting.
