Something Bugging me, and it's not the Radroaches

Yeah yeah, posted a blog entry already today, oh well. I already warned you all!!

Anyway, i've noticed something today and it's REALLY beginning to bug me. I don't mind people being a critic, giving critiques on works of art and the like. Not at all, it's what helps us writers and artists do better work in the future. But what I DO mind is people knocking something down without giving reason, or saying degrading things that in no way helps.

What am I talking about? Well, besides my opinion on the fact that MMORPG.com had limited forsight when they allow it's users to bump/bury things, but those people who bury without saying why. Especially when it's a piece of work that someone spent hours on. Case in point, I recently uploaded some pictures of weaponry I have worked on in Second Life. To me they are works of art, as it takes creativity, patience, time, and an idea to get it done. I've spent a few hours on each item, i've spent time and patience and frustrations one ach carefully crafted creation, but people don't seem to take this into account.

If you are going to bump it, say why. If you are going to bury it, you are obligated to say why it deserved a bury. Why is that, you ask? Well, one it gives me an idea as to why you disliked it, where I need work, and the opinions of others. If you just bury without saying why, to me, you are just being an immature moron that has no taste. Now I know a LOT of people on here dislike Second Life for whatever multitude of reasons there are out there, and I can pretty much gaurantee 90% of them have never tried it, think it's filled with sick sex addicts and freaks, and a waste of time.

But to those who HAVE tried it, and enjoy it, know that most of the people in Second Life are creative, well mannered, mature folk who are just there to have fun and use Second Life as an outlet for their creativity. I felt I would share my cretaivity with those on this site, to show them that not everyone who plays Second Life are just degenerate sex fiends with no life. To show them it ha spotential, it has it's use, and it CAN be fun.

So, to ALL of those who buried my uploaded pictures or have made degrading comments without giving either a damn good reason or some semblance of civility, stop. But I won't limit it to just my stuff, but others too. Stop burying things people upload because you "Just don't like it or whatever game it's a part of." That's not why we uploaded the pictures. We wanted to share with you our finds, creations, and joys. And get some good opinions on the side.

And to whoever is in charge of MMORPG.com, I implore you to remove the Bump/Bury option on EVERYTHING. It does not help creative growth. It only hinders creativity and makes others feel bad. It's unneccessary, as we all know, 90% of the internet is filled with immature dolts who are only out there to make others miserable.

Exactly! Movie critics don't just say 3 stars out of five, then move onto the next movie. they say WHY. Same with gaming mags. They rate the games, the review them, and they say WHY they gave them the rating they did. Be professional and mature, tell us WHY. That's all we ask, and it won't kill you in the slightest.

If you care what random internet people think you need to re-evaluate your reasons for creating.

I care what a lot of people think. Art can be great if done by me, sure. But my own opion isn't enough. It would make me look like an egotistical pompous ass. Art thrives on response. That is why we care.

As a creator you must try to become immune to such people who are simply attempting to insult your work for their own personal entertainment.

Why do comedians read the magazine/paper reviews of  "critics" when these people aren't even comedians themselves?

While professional game reviews will give reasons for their ratings, they very often give stupid reasons, such as fawning over the graphics.  The problem is that they have to file their review before they've played the game enough to have an informed opinion.  Things like how quickly the game will get old and repetitive are vitally important, but a game reviewer doesn't play the game long enough to have any clue.

In that spirit, I'm going to give a stupid reason to bump/bury this post:  because you used consecutive exclamation marks at one point.  Oh, and I'm not going to say whether that's a reason to bump the post or bury it.

That only makes you look like them. Foolish and immature. And that reason isn't even a viable reason. It's pointless.

Oh, i'm not gonna go cry if someone buries it, but I'd like to know why. That's all I ask is why. It's not hard to provide a simple reason, and if you have the time to hit the Bury button, you have time to say why as well, seeing the comment box is RIGHT under it.

I think people simply bury your images because they'd prefer to see MMO screenshots on MMO website, and you are posting pictures of guns in here. It's nothing personal, and probably doesn't have anything to do on how fine the guns actually are or not.

If I were you I'd seek out some other place to get constructive critisism of your pictures. This is not the right place to look for.

It's Second Life. It's an online Game. Mass people play on it. It's listed here, on MMORPG.com. It has it's own forums her. What I posted were things I MADE in Second Life. Thus, this site is PERFECTLY fine for those images.

Is it possible that bury doesn't actually mean something sucks? I mean, couldn't someone bury something if it was just not of interest to them and therefore not something they would want to see on a front page or something of the sort?

Ultimately, everyone is a critic. The thing is, some people are paid to be called critics. If you want to know why people buried something, perhaps you should offer to pay for their opinion. Otherwise, why should, or would, they be obligated to give it away for free.

As far as target audience, you mention yourself that a lot of people on here dislike Second Life. Whether that is true or not, it means that you are willfully placing your art in a hostile environment and then demanding to know why someone didn't bump it. It seems to me you've already formulated your reasons and fully expected it to not be bumped.

If you want meaningful feedback I would think a SecondLife specific site would be your target and not a general gaming site.

I'm not asking for it to be bumped. And if that's their reasoning for it to be buried, then why don't they say so? Wouldn't harm them any, nor make me upset. But if you are going to do somehting, at least say why to the parties involved. And i'm not just targeting Second Lifers. Thus my putting it here. This work is for gaming in general as well. Art also. So just going to a Second Life site wouldn't give me as diverse opinions as it would here.

Well, I am not here to argue about it. You asked a question and hopefully I presented you with a different perspecitve.

You did not address the point that professional critics are paid to give their opinion and you are asking that people take their time to give you there's when all they want is to not see your work. Otherwise, it is like art displayed in any public place. People will walk by it all day long (a bury) and some people might stop and admire (a bump). Neither of these parties may ever utter a word about the subject matter though.

Part of being an artist is being content in your art regardless of critical opinion. Pandering to critics is a commercial endeavor.

Walking by the art is not a bury. To bury it, one has to actively look at the image, the select the bury option. Big difference. All i'm asking is for people to say why. And no one here is a profesisonal critic, and i'm not even sure that's a legitimate job. All i'm asking is that they should say why they bury the image.

If they meant for bump/bury to be a text box they wouldn't have made it a button. It doesn't even bring one up.  It's a mechanism for instant polling nothing more. Seek validation elsewhere.
