So, by now you’ve heard the news that your favorite publisher of free-to-play MMO games is wading into the über competitive DotA sub-genre by releasing Realm of the Titans in the near future (if you are not in the loop check out this Press Release). Don't forget to Sign up for Closed Beta too.
As we glide toward the game’s Closed Beta release we here at Aeria Games are more than wading; we are currently fully immersed in all things DotA / MOBA.
For our inaugural Developers Blog Entry, we bring you what you need to know about DotA, Realm of the Titans, and our upcoming events.
What is DotA and MOBA?
DotA (pronounced DOTE-uh) stands for Defense of the Ancients. It was originally released as a custom scenario within the Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos RTS game in early 2003. The mod, in which two teams of 5 players each begin at opposing corners and must battle across a dynamic map to destroy the enemy structure, grew so popular that it eventually spawned its own RTS PvP sub-genre of DotA-inspired games. Follow-ups to the original DotA include League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth.

Duke it out on the battlefield in a DotA game
As the sub-genre matures, it is adopting a new, more general moniker: MOBA. Massively Online Battle Arena. However you refer to its worthy category, Realm of the Titans brings you the best gameplay and fierce competitive style of its original predecessors, along with its own distinct flavor and direction.
Yes, yes, I know the genre’s unique history. What makes ROTT so much better?
The industry veteran developers of ROTT learned a lot from the wins and fails of League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth. The talented folks at SG-TY made sure to resurrect such old-school DotA features as the popular “deny” tactic, while still creating an authentically new experience. Realm of the Titans delivers freshness to the genre with advanced matchmaking, unique map control points, and a new crop of beefed up heroes to play. We will bring you a special hero showcase for each of the first playable characters in the coming weeks, beginning next week!
