Achaean Series: Starting a clan

Most people that play online games with any amount of frequency know of the term, "clan". It is usually synonymous with that of "guild", or "corporation" (for you EVE players), or even "squads or teams" in certain competitive gaming leagues. In those games, such a term signifies that a group of players have joined together for mutual cooperation, aid, and advancement. In Achaea, however, and in many MUDS, clans are different from those familiar connotations.

In Achaea, players organizations are all ready accomplished using established houses and cities in the various factions that comprise the world of Sapience. Therefore, there isn't a need for guilds or clans in the traditional sense. You'll find many websites of World of Warcraft guilds or EVE corporations, but you won't find that in Achaea. Players find camaraderie by joining the in-game organizations all ready present and communicate in game using a variety of methods.

However, due to the fact that Achaea is an MMORPG, it does allow players to create their own organizations outside the traditional organizations. It takes a good deal of work and dedication, especially if the clan is in conflict with an all ready established faction, house, or city. But if you want to create a group of performers, or perhaps a chess or reversi club, you can create a clan to do so! Some have created various cults in game, using the clan system, while others have created families or Houses that mimic the traditional, structured Houses within the game using the clan system.

In a role playing game, your only limit is defined by the game storyline constructs and your imagination. Achaea is no exception! There are many clans that have successfully ascended to the position of "high clan", a term signifying a clan that has a very high role playing atmosphere and one that is beneficial to the game itself. For instance, the Pirates of Meropis is a clan that was formed to unite the pirates in their goal to plunder the oceans and ships of Sapience. Another clan, the Dwarves of Kongol Drak. exists to unite the various Dwarven clans together.

Some clans exist to benefit the various factions, cities, and houses too. For instance, each ministry in the city has a clan in order to facilitate the work that needs to be done. House councils usually have clans formed for their secret meetings. The armies and guards of each city have their own clan in order to assemble defensive and offensive maneuvers against their enemies.

And for those that enjoy talking to others in a less restrictive fashion, clans can be created for OOC (out of character) reasons. Though I am not personally a fan of such clans, many partake and enjoy being able to talk to other Achaeans without breaking the role playing standards of the game. They function as simple chat rooms, though there are various (and humorous) ways to customize them as well.

As you can see, clans differ from the more common use in other games. At the same time, though, they can function as important and arguably closer organizations than guilds or clans found in other games. They possess the ability to invoke real change within the game, unify individuals, help in different projects, and provide a medium for anything you wish to create. Achaean Series: Tattoos and their importance

Ever wanted to become a tattoo artist? In IRE's MUD of Achaea, you can do just that! Unlike our world, within Achaea, tattoos are not just beautiful works of art. No, they are an outright necessity for combat, hunting, and safety. There are many different tattoos one can get, most of which are not permanent (though they can be made permanent through another process). Each tattoo holds a special power, some of which are always activated, and some which need to be activated.

No needles needed here! In Achaea, the art of tattooing is an old one, practiced by ancient Tsol'aa. Using dried powders formed from various berries and roots, a tattoo artist can swirl the inks and imprint them upon any body part that you wish. With training, more spots on the body can be imprinted with tattoos, and an adventurer can learn to tattoo their own body!

So, what are the kinds of tattoos available? Let's take a look:

  • Shield              Protect yourself from most attacks.

  • Bell                Be warned when there are those spying on you.
  • Crystal             Heal yourself of all your wounds.
  • Moon                Regeneration of mana through the power of light.

  • Boar                Feel the noble blood of the Black Boar beat in your veins.
  • Web                 Snare another in a sticky web.
  • Tentacle            Call the tentacles of Shimite to rip someone from the sky.
  • Hourglass           Send the sands of time to put your victim to sleep.
  • Brazier             Summon another to you.
  • Prism               Walk on prismatic shards of light.
  • Tree                Heal yourself with the tree of life.
  • Megalith            Partake of the determination of the megalith.
  • Ox                  Endurance flows through the spirit of the Ox.

  • Superscribe         Hold two tattoos on each body part.
Some tattoos, like the boar, cause health regeneration in an adventurer. The moon tattoo functions similarly, only regenerating mana instead. Those that wish to stay alive, even in death, would want the starburst tattoo inked upon them. Assassins and serpents might find the chameleon tattoo to their liking, allowing them to change their identity to someone else and remain unseen. Shield tattoos are important in combat to protect against damage, and web tattoos can be used offensively to hinder an opponent. Ever wanted to teleport yourself to another being? A prism tattoo will do the trick. Or how about bringing them to you? Try a brazier tattoo!

Blademasters: The mysterious warriors of Achaea

The skills of the blademaster, chronicled in ancient Achaean lore, were lost to much of the history of Sapience. The only record of their mysterious skills was from the story of a long forgotten hero. His name was Lucaine Pyramides, a warrior-poet that hailed from the distant continent of Kashar, where he had been born into slavery. He was secretly trained by an elder slave in the skills of the Two Arts and given a blade called the Three Moons. Eventually, he commandeered a ship and set sail across the oceans, with a rising reputation as a fearless mercenary.

He rose in prominence, the story goes, during the days of the Seleucarian Empire, fighting for an empress against her many foes. The legend tells how he cut through hordes of enemy soldiers, killing over three-hundred men with his blade, Three Moons, trying to save her life. His later death caused his skills and blade to fade with the passing of time. However, in modern times, his blade was rediscovered, and the lineage of Lucaine was found. The skills of the blademaster were reborn, and now many seek to train in the mysterious arts.

What does it take to become a blademaster, and what are the skills that they wield? Those that accept the path of hardship, discipline, and fortitude will find the path of the blademaster to their liking. Each warrior is trained in the skills of Two Arts, Striking, and Shindo. Striking is unarmed combat using pressure points and physical vulnerabilities, allowing a blademaster to cause a host of afflictions against an enemy combatant. Striking complements the excellent sword skills of such warriors, allowing them to strike and use their blade together. These sword skills are called the Two Arts. It is a style of swordsmanship that allow smooth, swift, and precise slashes against an enemy.

Unlike other combatants, a blademaster forms a special bond with his sword, each uniquely named. No two swords are alike, and each blade is specially named and crafted using ingredients found throughout Sapience. Held in special scabbards, the blades may be released quickly upon those that would dare do battle against a blademaster.

The last skill is that of Shindo. Through hard work, practice, and training, the rigors of combat can be eased using many of the skills found in Shindo. At higher levels of training, Shindo becomes somewhat of a battle-frenzied energy, allowing a blademaster to form the shintrance, specially using the powers found in Shindo.

The blademasters that possess the skills of Two Arts, Striking, and Shindo are formidable indeed. The path is not easy, but it is extremely rewarding. Those that would bond their soul to a blade and discipline themselves for the rigors of combat, will find the skills of a blademaster to their liking. Achaean Series: Dragons and Dragoncraft

For some adventurers in the MUD of Achaea, reaching dragonhood is the pinnacle of success. It is a process that involves a person reaching the ninety-ninth level. The challenge is hard, and few will reach such a goal, making it an enticing reward in and of itself. But the benefits for overcoming such a challenge are many. In this Achaean series, we're going to take a brief look at how one becomes a dragon and what the ensuing dragoncraft is like!

Unlike the lesser dragons that roam the continent of Sapience, when an adventurer reaches the level of ninety-nine, they are transformed into that of a greater dragon. Greater dragons retain a spot in the lore and history of Achaea, making it a privileged position. Though bashing (or hunting, as it is termed in game) seems easy, leveling up and progressing does take a considerable amount of time. Knowledge of prime hunting spots, geography, travel, curatives, and a basic knowledge of your class will be needed in order to do so. However, those that take the time to do so will be heavily rewarded!

Once someone has ascended to the rank of a greater dragon, they are given a new class called dragoncraft with the ability to dragonform into a dragon! Plus, they are given a range of benefits, such as a new racial language (Dragon), the ability to fly, an increase in base statistics, a myriad of resistances, and the ability to choose your own dragon color. Each dragon color corresponds to a different power, too. For example, a black-colored dragon has acid breath, whereas a red-colored dragon breathes fire. These benefits alone make dragon a tempting goal. However, as I mentioned before, players are also given a whole new class called dragoncraft that feature a variety of new skills.

Once a player has dragonformed, and transformed into a dragon, their former skills are closed off and they use dragon skill abilities. Don't worry, though, as dragons can use the ability of lesser form any time they want and use their former class skills. What are some examples of dragon skills? Well, dragons can gut players with their claws, or knock down foes with their tails. They can use an ability called "pierce the veil", allowing the dragon to fly off into the land of dragons. They can use their breathstream to take out enemies, or simply chomp down on them.

Becoming a dragon is a milestone that is well respected in Achaea. Whether someone prefers hunting or combat, the dragon class makes both extremely viable. Achaean Series: Casinos, roulette, blackjack, and other forms of gambling in Achaea

Have a penchant for Lady Luck? Do you enjoy hard liquor, smoke-hazed rooms, and high-stakes gambling? Do you prefer lotteries, making bets, or the roll of a dice? If you enjoy any of the preciously mentioned, you're in luck! While most RPG's feature limited forms of gambling, Achaea and other MUDs from IRE feature many different options! After your characters have progressed past level twenty, the wide world of gambling opens up! In this Achaean series, we'll look at the variations of games available for the adventurer.

Gambling takes many forms in Achaea. Much of the time, you'll be able to quench your lucky streaks throughout the casinos sprinkled throughout the lands. Most of the cities have at least one casino, with attendants, drinks, and games available. Roulette and Blackjack are the two official games featured in the casinos.

Roulette, for the uninitiated, is a simple game of luck that can be very enjoyable. Each roulette wheel has an attendant that will spin the wheel, allowing the silver ball to circle around until it lands one of the sections. You simply choose how much gold you wish to bet, and what to bet on, and everything else is taken care of. While roulette is mostly luck, the payouts can be huge for those that value high stakes!

Blackjack tables, like roulette, are also found in the casinos. Each table is manned by an attendant that will shuffle the cards and deal your hand. Unlike roulette, Blackjack allows a fair amount of skill, giving players an advantage (and a nice payout) for learning the game.

Of course, there are other forms of gambling that don't take place in casinos! General betting and lotteries are two such types. General betting is controlled by the bookies. As mentioned in my previous article on trades, adventurers can become bookies, allowing them the ability to setup bets on anything. A popular form of general betting occurs during the gladiatorial arena games. Bookies will often start a game, allowing you to bet on who you think will win the arena game. Since bookies always get a cut of the winning proceeds, it remains a popular option.

Lotteries are also prevalent, and popular, because they have gold giveaways, pets, curatives, and other forms of prizes for the winning tickets. There are always winners for such tickets, and the lottery runners always get a cut of the proceeds. Since the cost of a ticket is cheap, compared to the great prizes that are available to win, lotteries are a very popular and low-risk option in Sapience.

For the spontaneous gamblers, dice and simply flipping coins are often fun ways of small-time, low-key gambling. Games of craps, and other variations, can be found in the cities. However you prefer to gamble, and whether you enjoy high stakes or low stakes, Achaea has something for everyone. Achaean Series: Taking up a trade and becoming an artisan

Becoming an Artisan (a craftsperson) is a goal many people make when playing Achaea or other MUDs. It has become standard in roleplaying games to allow a player to craft something using different reagents and items. In Achaea, there are different types of crafting available. Some trades, such as tailoring, require a license. Others, like forging, merely require you to be a certain class. Want to craft, wear, and sell items? We'll talk about your options right here!

First, what types of trades are available? There are many to consider! If you want to make all manner of clothing, including shoes and hats, you can become a tailor. If you'd rather make your own rings, necklaces, earrings, or piercings, you can become a jeweller. If you enjoy creating culinary delights, you can take up cooking as a master chef. Have a bit of a gambling side in you? Become a bookie and allow people to make bets on one of the many arena games that occur. You can become a shopkeeper and allow people to buy the goods that you sell. If you'd rather forge weapons and armor like a blacksmith, there are three knight classes that allow you to be able to forge. Taking up a trade is easy, and there is no limit to how many trades you can take up. Take up all of them and sell your wares in a shop!

Second, how hard is it to become an artisan? Not hard at all. Some trades require an official license in game to be paid before the trade can be practiced. The town of Delos offers such licenses to adventures that wish to buy them, and offer the schematics, recipes, and patterns necessary to start the trade. Other trades require you to be a particular class. Forging, for instance, is a skill in one of the three knight classes in Achaea (Infernal, Paladin, and Runewarden). As you progress in skill, your ability to forge greater weapons and armor increases.

Third, what is special about becoming an artisan? There are many advantages of seeking a trade. For instance, as a tailor, you never need to shop around for clothes that you like. Jewellers can perform body piercings and repair jewellery given to them. Other advantages, such as engraving or embroidering, are also available. Artisans can extend the life of their items, sell them to players, and store them in shops. Artisans can take up a trade merely to be self-sufficient, hawk their wares, or to simply express their creative side.

Achaean Series: Earning Gold in Achaea

Young adventurers in Achaea often set their sights upon different goals in game. Some might aspire for political power, others will choose martial prowess. Some will explore the lands of Sapience, while others will focus on creating, crafting, or forging many different weapons and items. Each path is up to the individual, but young adventurers usually find out quickly enough that they must obtain material weath, usually in the form of gold, in order to pursue such dreams. There are many ways to earn such gold in this MUD, and we'll focus on some of those ways in this article.

First, Ratting! The cities of Achaea are plagued with an incessant rat problem, often stemming from the intricate sewer systems found in each city. Fortunately, adventurers are able to use such a problem to their advantage. Each city employs a rat collector, and each rat collector will pay a generous sum for each rat killed and taken back to them. Ratting is the best way for a young adventurer to earn gold fast.

Second, Questing! Thousands of quests are scattered around the lands of Sapience, ranging from simple to very complex. Lodi, Minia, and Gheladan are the first areas a new adventurer starts out, and they contain many quests that give both experience and a handsome amount of gold. However, as an adventurer progresses in both skill and fame, there are still thousands of quests that can be had for lucrative payouts.

Third, Hunting! Powerful creatures exist throughout Sapience, and many with stores of gold waiting to be plundered. The more powerful the creatures, the more gold that will be found. In addition, like questing, experience is gained through the slaying of these creatures, allowing you to progress in both power and riches while hunting.

Fourth, becoming a Merchant! In a future post, I'll be going over how to become an artisan, and go over a few things an aspiring merchant can craft. From tailoring clothes, to forging weapons, Achaea allows you to create many different items and weapons. There exists a Market Channel for those that wish to sell such goods, or even services, to the public. Shops can be purchased, or rented, in order to facilitate the ability to sell goods to others. Whether you're buying low and selling high, trading, or haggling, becoming a merchant makes earning gold relatively easy.

Fifth, using Tradeskills! Most classes have some type of skill that can be used to benefit others. For example, I play a serpent-classed character. Serpents can envenom arrows and secrete venoms for others to buy. Magi can create enchanted items, knights can forge weapons and armour. Sentinels, alchemists, and druids can create and harvest herbs and curatives to sell.

Sixth, becoming a Mercenary! As I mentioned in a previous article, adventurers can choose to become a Champion with the Ivory Mark, or an Assassin with the Quisalis Mark. Though Champions do not take payments for their contracts, as the Quisalis Assassins do, they can still be contracted out and paid as mercenaries.

And more!

You'll need such wealth to purchase the houses, ships, weapons, armor, artefacts, furniture, toys, games, and the thousands of other items that can be found in game. Interested in earning gold? Achaean Series: Worshipping a God or Goddess

The following and worshipping of in-game Gods and Goddesses can be some of the most rewarding roleplaying experiences that a player can have in the MUD of Achaea. Often distinctly different than factional roleplay, serving a divine with other like-minded individuals can take many forms considering there are thirty-three different Gods and Goddesses in Achaea. Whether you follow Ourania, Goddess of the Moon, or Neraeos, God of the Sea, being a part of a religious order can shape and define your character in great ways.

Personally, my character follows the tenets of Babel, God of Oblivion. This experience has defined my character in many ways. For example, my character can worship and pray in the temple of Babel, is closely associated and roleplays with the other followers of Babel, and he defines his ideals based upon the precepts that the Order of Babel adheres to. Since the Order of Babel teaches that the world will face impending ruin and subsequently cease to exist one day, my character doesn't feel any compunction to follow the morality-based ideals that the factions of Good, Evil, and Nature adhere to. My character, a serpent, can steal without feeling empathy, or become drunk with alchohol without feeling weak-natured, etc.

The player behind the God or Goddess can make the order very fun to be in. Babel, as an example, closely interacts with his followers on a consistent basis, making it enjoyable. The other followers of the order also make an order. Other bloggers here on, such as Lianca and Amunet, also follow Babel and are incredibly skilled at roleplaying. They make being in the order even more enjoyable. That is just one small example of the opportunities that await you in the vast amount of orders and divine that Achaea hosts.

Once you're a follower of an particular divine, you may participate in and defend shrines dedicated to whoever you follow. Shrines are places where people can offer hunted corpses to sanctify or defile (destroy) a shrine dedicated to your divine. Corpses offered for sanctification improve a shrine and give essence to your God or Goddess. Essence is simply spiritual magic that can be used by your divine order for special spells and powers. Corpses offered for defilement destroy the shrine. Many religious wars have been fought by opposing orders over differing ideologies.

The tenets and ideology of an order can have a profound impact on your character and on your particular roleplay. It almost always enhances the character and opportunities that can be found in Achaea. Achaean Series: Mastering the high seas!

Ah, so you want to be a Captain someday, eh? Does the prospect of riches, rum, and ruby-lipped lasses entice you? I suppose, then, that you won't mind the shark-infested waters, the marauding pirates, or the powerful navies of the city-states, hm? Perhaps you should also consider the dangerous sea-serpents and beasts that devour whole ships, or the tritons that serve the God of the Sea and make bloody war within the waters. If you can mind your boots and fasten the rigging, you just might stand a chance. Welcome to the watery adventures of seafaring in Achaea!

In this brief synopsis, we'll take a look at the broad realm of ships and all that entails them! Achaea allows you the opportunity to become a captain, or even an admiral, should you desire the opportunity. Whether your true goal is to become a merchant that trades from port to port, or a pirate that plunders the isles and ships that he encounters, there are many opportunities for roleplaying, combat, hunting, and exploration to be had.

First, let's look at the ships! In Achaea, you can commission and own a Windcutter, Seastrider, or War Galley. Each of these fine vessels allow you to stock weapons and armaments aboard, fashion a crew, create rooms from within your cabin, and sail to your hearts content. The Windcutter is the smallest of these vessels. Nimble, but less effective in combat, these sturdy vessels provide a cost-effective means for the young explorer or merchant. Perhaps you'd simply like to fish, deep sea dive, or salvage sunken ships? The Windcutter is perfect for such things.

The Seastrider is the middle-of-the-road vessel. Faster and larger than the Windcutter, is can afford a larger crew, more rooms, and more weaponry. It has long been a favorite for city-state navies and pirates alike. It can also be just as effective as the Windcutter for the simple options of diving or fishing. The War Galley is the largest, albeit slowest, vessel, it nonetheless can top the crusing speeds of the other vessels and allows a huge number of weapons and armaments, making it a powerhouse in ship combat.

Second, let's look at ship equipment! A cartographer's desk can be supplied in order to store the nautical maps of the various seas and islands that encompass the world. Figureheads can be mounted to the bow of the hull in order to provide various seaspells. Leadlines, sextants, and spyglasses can also be purchased to provide better navigation and assistance while sailing. Also, let's not forget about the crew, bait tanks for holding fish, salvage equipment to retrieve sunken ships, and many more items that can be obtained!

Third, any Captain that intends to fight should look at the available weapons. The Arcanian arm is the smallest of the weapons, capable of shooting discs and flairs. Ballistas can also be equipped to shoot stronger discs, and onagers (catapult-like weapons) can be mounted to fire chainshot, starshot, and flares. Captains, after they have learned enough, can forceboard ships, allowing them to kill the opposing sailors.

Many ports exist, and all require the shipping services of prospective merchants. Meanwhile, when you're not deep sea fishing, diving, salvaging ships, or shipping goods, there are islands to be explored, seabeasts to be killed, pirates to be warded off, and navies to flee or fight. Achaean Series: Cities of Sapience

In the previous post, I briefly outlined the overall factions that drive the storyline, roleplaying elements, and the player-divine driven content of this MUD. However, each of those broad factions are represented uniquely by player-run cities, houses, and orders in game. In this post, we'll focus on the cities that occupy Sapience (the main continent) in Achaea.

The first player-run city is Shallam. Hailing from the southern Pash Valley, it stands as a beacon of Light and Justice, representing the faction of Good. Priests and Paladins, especially, call this city their home. The Citadel of Light, as well as the houses of the Dawnstriders, Templar, Empyreal Assembly, and the Sentaari monks are situated here.

The second player-run city is Mhaldor. Representing the faction of Evil, the fortress of Mhaldor sits imposingly upon the red-hazed isle. Its gates and ramparts stand guard against the weakness of the East. Apostates and Infernals, especially, call this city their home. The houses of the Maldaathi, Naga, Congregation, and Ebon Fist are situated here.

The third player-run city is Ashtan. Representing the throne of Chaos and the freedom it entails, the city stands as a bulwark against all that threaten the faction of Chaos. It prides itself upon its military might and famed reputation for freedom. Occultists, especially, call this city their home. The houses of the Occultists, Warlocks, Shadowsnakes, and Ashura monks are situated here.

The fourth player-run city is Eleusis. Situated amongst the trees and treetops of the forest, this woodland village represents the faction of the Forests, and it provides protection and security to the like-minded individuals that love and serve the forests. Sentinels, Druids, and Sylvans, especially, call this city their home. The houses of the Sylvans, Sentinels, and Druids are situated here.

The fifth player-run city is Hashan. Representing the minor faction of Darkness, Hashan prides itself on its economical prowess, devotion to Darkness, and its neutrality in world affairs. Hashan consistently forges its own path, no matter the cost. The houses of the Merchants, Serpentlords, Spiritwalkers, and Black Lotus monks reside here.

The sixth player-run city is Cyrene. Representing the minor faction of neutral-good, Cyrene sits isolated amongst the southern mountain ranges, content to live life peacefully and without conflict. The isolationist stance has provided fodder to its detractors, but like Hashan, Cyrene stands ready to forge its own path at all costs. The houses of the Arcane Kindred, Runewardens, Ty Beirdd, and Mojushai monks reside here.

Though we've finished with the cities, there are still many orders and the above-mentioned houses that represent the factions that have been outlined. Achaean Series: In-game factions

Since my blog is more or less about Achaea (hint: I want more people to know about us and join up!) and MUDs in general, I figured I'd start a series about certain aspects of the game. Hopefully something from this post or the future posts in this series will pique one or two of you (or more) to give MUDs a shot, and possibly Achaea as well! First, we're going to look at the factions of Achaea.

Factions are important in most games because they give your character a sense of purpose. Without an opposing force, there is no game or story. In Achaea, these factions drive the game, the story, and the roleplaying elements through player and divine-driven content. These factions are represented by player-run cities, orders, and houses, and we'll touch on those organizations later in the series. For now, however, we'll touch on each of the broad factions in games.

There are arguably four main factions in the game, in addition to two smaller ones.

First, there is the faction of Good. They are the virtuous crusaders of the Light and preachers of righteousness. They worship and follow the tenets of the Te'Serra divine and actively seek out all that they find heretical. They actively oppose the factions of Evil and Chaos and seek to preserve Creation through any means. Major classes: Paladin and Priest

Second, there is the faction of Evil. They worship the Twin Lords, seeking to spread dominion over all others through oppression and suffering. They value strength above all else while seeking to purge weakness from themselves and others. They actively oppose the factions of Good, Chaos, and the Forests and work to preserve order. Major classes: Apostate and Infernal

Third, there is the faction of Chaos. They worship the God of Oblivion, Babel, and seek to preach of the impending ruin that all factions will face. They value freedom through true enlightenment and work to stop the forces of Evil, Good, and the Forests from oppressing the populace with false morality and interrupting their Master's work. Major classes: Occultist

Fourth, there is the faction of the Forests. They worship the druidic ways of the woods, as well as the forestal Gods, and seek to preserve and safeguard the forests from all that seek to destroy or abuse it. They actively oppose the forces of Evil and Chaos and work to preserve Creation. Major classes: Sentinel, Druid, and Sylvan

The two lesser factions consist of Darkness and Neutrality, with each being influenced in some ways with the above main factions. In my next post in this series, I'll touch upon the cities that actively represent these factions! Serpents: Spymasters, thieves, and assassins of Achaea

There are many classes (professions with skillsets) in Achaea, and more than likely, I'll write about them someday. However, my favorite class in the game, and the one that I have always played on my character, is the serpent class. There is so much utility, roleplay, and combat viability included within its skills that many players fall in love with the class to such an extent that they never choose another.

The serpent class, as the name suggests, deals with serpentine skills. Each class in Achaea has three main skills, in relation to the general skills that everyone has. The three skillsets of the serpent class are: subterfuge, venom, and hypnosis. I'll take some time to go over each skill briefly.

First, we'll look at subterfuge. This is the skill that most serpents fall in love with. Rattling and hiding are the first abilities a serpent receives. Rattle is a serpent-only language that only other serpent players can understand. Many of the serpent houses (Serpentlords, Naga, Dawnstriders, and Shadowsnakes) employ this language liberally as an effective roleplay aspect and secret way of communicating. Hiding, as the name suggests, allows you to camoflauge yourself with your surroundings. As a serpent progresses, they'll learn the ability of scales that act as armor, and bowmanship that allows you to become an unseen sniper with a darkbow and a quiver.

Serpents will continue to learn such abilities as eavesdropping, and doublestabbing, along with pickpocketing, illusions, and execution. Cloak and ghosting will be added, complementing your hiding ability, and soon you'll also have your very own snake that will aid in battle. Wormholes, the ability to quickly traverse the continent, will be learned, along with phase, a powerful ability that completely conceals you, allowing you to perform assassinations or spy without being seen. There are many abilities that I have not mentioned, but suffice to say, subterfuge is a very fun and enjoyable skill. If you ever wanted to play a rogue-like character, a thief, assassin, spy, or that type of character, the serpent class is something you should check out!

Second, we'll look at venoms and hypnosis together. Both skills are powerful. Without these, a serpent cannot be effective at combat. Venoms allow the serpent to apply poisonous toxins upon his dirk, or sell such toxins to other allies and merchants for gold. Each venom causes a different reaction if given to another adventurer. For instance, some venoms cause paralysis and stupidity, while others cause asthma and sleepiness. These powerful venoms allow a serpent to afflict another combatant with these poisons in order to kill them. Hypnosis works the same way, only instead of stabbing them with your dirk, as you do with venoms, you implant them within the mind of your opponent. These mental afflictions work alongwith the venom afflicts to make the serpent capable of locking an opponent in battle.

The utility of the serpent skillset is, without question, very good. From swinging through trees, to hiding, to travelling around the continent in wormholes, the serpent has plenty to offer him. In combat, including raids, the serpent is viable with his bow, dirk, whip, and fangs, allowing him to be an effective combatant and raider.

Achaean Housing - a well-armed shack, a stronghold, or a mansion!

Ever dreamed about owning your own stronghold, fortress, or castle? Perhaps you're more simple-minded, wanting a small little cottage near a lake? What if you could build your own temple to an in-game God that you worship, or build a museum to show off art and sculptures? In Achaea, that is completely possible! 

Where can you build? There are many options. For the most part, many choose to build their dream homes in the subdivisions of the city that they are a citizen of. Subdivisions offer security and protection from outside forces, offer the majority of plots that can be used for housing, and feature various types of land to build upon. Whether you want a grassy plot, or a plot that features flowers or streams, it can be found in the city subdivisions. Plus, the plots are relatively cheap, allowing you to save your gold and credits for more rooms and upgrades for your house.

Achaea also offers out-of-subdivision plots regularly when they host auctions. Win one of these prized plots and you are well on your way to building that secret criminal den that you've dreamed about. Rooms can be built upon ships, as well! Whether you want to build a secret lounge near the ship cabin, or just want somewhere to relax away from your crewmates, the possibilities are endless.

What can you build? You can build the initial rooms and doors, and then add on from there! For instance, you build a room, set the description, and then add a door. You can make it so that only your friends can enter or just yourself. If you're making a more public building, such as a museum or temple, you can allow the door to let everyone in. You can build ground level rooms, then complete them with basements, attics, hallways to other rooms, and more. I've personally seen two 20+ room mansions, a museum, a temple, and a hideout from the creativity of those that play this MUD.

What can you add on? Practically anything that you would like. Achaea offers a wide assortment of furniture to add. Carpets, beds, desks, chests, tables, tapestries, thrones, and more can be bought within game! Items from within game can be brought in too, of course. From the idols found at sea, to the gameboard bought in New Thera, your imagination is the only limit in regards to adding on to your structure. If you want, you can also build gardens, stables, or regeneration rooms for you and your allies.

Have you ever wanted to build anything, for yourself or for an organization? As I mentioned before, there is no limit but your own imagination. The sky is truly the limit in this case, which is another reason MUDs trump regular graphic games. Stop, thief! Choosing a Champion or an Assassin to avenge you

As I've mentioned in previous articles, the MUD that I play, Achaea, is a living world with many wonderful possibilities and hidden dangers. Navigating such dangers can be a harrowing experience, indeed, for the new adventurer. Luckily enough, there are many organizations designed to assist and protect you, including player-run Houses and Cities. However, there will be times when you require something greater in order to invoke justice upon your enemies. In such cases, there are Champions and Assassins that await you.

Perhaps a relative of yours was stolen from? Or perhaps a political ally was slain before your eyes? Or maybe you personally were attacked? If the enemy managed to slip away, you still have options to avenge yourself.

First, there are the great Champions of Achaea. The Ivory Mark was created as a brotherhood of Champions available to fight for those that could not defend themselves. Honorable, and willing to take up the cause for all those that are wronged, the Ivory Mark receives no compensation for their work. They fight for justice without promise of coin. Indeed, if you desire, you are given the option of joining such an organization and fighting for others as well.

Second, there are the secretive assassins of the Quisalis Mark. Members of the Quisalis will take out assassinations for a price, unlike the Champions. If you've been wronged, and have a purse of coins to spare, the assassins of the Quisalis will attempt to assassinate your target for you. They do not champion the cause of justice, but rather, work for the highest bidder. Indeed, if you desire, you are also given the option of joining the Quisalis, if you desire to kill for coin.

Both organizations are headquarted in different areas of the lands. If you desire, and become strong enough to do so, you can join these organizations and fight for the causes mentioned above. To join, you will need to find their bases of operations and speak to the appropriate leader. Whether you need a champion, or require a hitman, there are many options for justice available to you. Perhaps, in time, you will be the one that others call upon when wrongs are committed. That option is left up to you!

Achaean Crime: Building your criminal empire

One thing that separates regular graphic games and MUDs, such as the ones Iron Realms offers, is the ability to play any role that you want. Want to be the knight in shining armor, protecting the populace from the wiles of Evil and corruption? You can! Want to be the dark assassin, silently leaving death and destruction in your wake? You can! Ever wanted to take part in the criminal underworld? In Achaea, you have that option!

Let's take a look at the options available for an enterprising criminal kingpin such as yourself.

First, there are a wide assortment of alchoholic beverages and drugs available. Everything from common Ale to Rum and Whiskey. For high-profile criminal business meetings, there are even assortments of wines and champagnes to choose from. Of course, drunkeness and slurred speech will occur should too many of these drinks be imbibed. But hey, your rival across the table doesn't need to be warned about such things. Drink up!

Drugs are also available for either your own use or for profitable trafficking! Cactus weed is a simple herb that can be found in the Mhojave desert. If it is smoked, it produces hallucinations and feelings of euphorbia. Gleam, on the other hand, is a snortable, highly-addictive drug. The first uses create positive changes, but multiple uses will cause hallucinations and withdrawal symtoms. If you manage to ascertain many clients of gleam, you'll certainly need to traffick in a good amount of the drug into the cities. Just make sure you pay off the custom officials! Dr. Kortoxian, a fellow that produces the drug, can also sell it to you in the underbellies of the individual cities of Achaea.

Second, no criminal enerprise would be complete without brothels! There are three main brothels situated across the lands of Achaea. Each allows patrons to pay for services ranging from simple massages to the more exquisite pleasures of life. These are fine places to setup bases of operation, conduct meetings, or to send clients to. The Bathory Chalet of Mhaldor, the Dancing Dryad Tavern (located on the Mysian Pirate Island), and the House of Delights in Hashan offer such services. All of them offer drinks or other items of interest.

Third, every criminal kingpin has the option of adding theft of stolen goods to their repetoire. Using serpent-classed individuals, gold and other items can be pickpocketed from individuals throughout the streets and markets of the cities of Achaea. Since gold buys everything from credits to herbs, it is a valuable resource. Send your henchmen throughout the countryside to swipe gold from the denizens that inhabit the many villages in order to create a steady cashflow that can be used in turn to buy the drugs that you need for your paying clients.
