Producer Blog: Talismans
December 7, 2010

Hi fellow Zentians.  We’ve designated the week of December 6-13 to be Talisman Week, so today I’m going to be teaching you how to acquire, activate, transform, and smelt your talisman.  Talismans are one of the most important systems in Zentia, so sit back, break open a bag of your favorite munchies, and get ready to learn a thing or two about these powerful, funky weapons!

The Talisman is the source of power for every character, and each class uses a different one.  While Talismans appear as simple everyday items, such as a gourd, a bell, or even a really big rock, the powers they provide are anything but mundane.  Who would have thought a gourd could shoot out fiery monkeys, a rock could summon a god to smash enemies, or a bell could resurrect the dead (ok, maybe people could have guessed that one)?

The Talisman is so important to your character that you’re given a newbie one upon creating your character, so you’ll be able to start using your powers from the very beginning.  As a beginning talisman, it only provides a couple of simple stat bonuses.  After you’ve progressed a few levels, you’ll acquire your next newbie talisman from Taoist Koo.  This one is more powerful and upgradeable as well!  Once you leave Mulberry and get to Serene City, you’ll acquire your Rank 1 talisman from Captor DJ as a reward for one of the quests he gives you.  This is the first fully transformable and smeltable talisman you’ll receive, so it’s pretty significant.

All Rank 1 and above talismans can be activated, transformed, and eventually smelted to make your character more powerful.  Activating a talisman is the first and most common form of upgrade.  By talking to a talisman Taoist and using the appropriate stone, you can activate different stat bonuses and even additional skills.  Each talisman has a limited number of bonuses that can be activated.  Once you’ve activated them all, you can then use the same process, albeit with a different type of stone, to transform the talisman into a more powerful one, a Doom talisman.  It will keep all of the previous bonuses and unlock additional ones that can be activated.  Eventually, you’ll max out even the highest version of that talisman, the Draco talisman, and want to move on to a different one.  Then you can smelt it, again using the same process, to destroy the talisman and permanently acquire its unique skills as your own!  All of the talismans and the items used to activate, transform, and smelt them are acquired in-game through various quests, instances, NPCs, and the token shop (and for a limited time, the main 8 Rank 1 talismans are available in the token shop as well).

Now let’s talk proficiency.  Proficiency is like the talisman’s experience level, and as you use your talisman, it increases in proficiency.  You can view your talisman’s proficiency level, skill points, and talents in the class talisman window.  Each time you fill up the proficiency bar, you’ll gain a skill point.  You can then assign this point to one of the talents.  These talents add yet more bonuses to your character.  And as you fill up a talent with points, you’ll be able to unlock even more powerful talents!

Finally, make sure to check out the Talisman tab in the token shop.  As I mentioned above, many of the items used to upgrade your talisman are sold there, and during Talisman week, you’ll be able to purchase your class-specific Rank 1 talisman for 99 cents.  You might be asking, “Why would I want to buy it if I can get it by questing?”  Good question – many players don’t realize when they first start playing that they can smelt their talismans when they no longer need them.  Many of them just throw the talisman away.  Since you can’t acquire the talisman again because it’s a quest item, we’re offering players a second chance to smelt their old talismans and acquire their skills!  Once you have the talisman, you’ll obviously need the necessary stones and jades to activate, transform, and smelt it.  Of course, you can find these in game, but the token shop is a much easier way of getting these items, as they normally require a considerable amount of either gold or questing time in game to acquire.  What’s more, we’ve also added special talisman packs to the shop that provide discounts on the most popular stones and jades.

Well, hopefully you’ve learned a thing or two after reading all of this.  If you still want to learn more, check out the talisman guide on the Zentia web site or head on over to the forums to ask your fellow Zentians.  I’m sure they’ll be happy to help.  Happy smelting!
