Why do we do it? In the forums there is always comparison from 'game a' to WoW. But why? People can argue that almost all MMO gamers have had experience with WoW and so its a good benchmark to use, devs aim to beat it, and customers look for the game that beats it.

Why should dev's aim to beat it? why even try to compete with it? I am always seeing people flame a game saying it is "too WoW-like" yet, the game isn't really like WoW..unless ofcourse the fact that it is an MMO makes it the exact same game? People need to redefine their standards and understand that WoW is not the be all and end all of the MMO industry.

Blizzard is a corporate giant, they aim WoW to appeal to the masses, look at the game in more depth, look at the pve, how encounters never change, once a boss is down its simply a question of rinse and repeat...there is no change, no further challenge. As for PvP, the skill cap is so low its in another world. If a game was to truely be similar to WoW Blizzard would act fast and look to dominate any rivals game, afterall...this is big money we are talking about and blizzard will look to protect its investment.

As for these forums, there seems to be alot of dislike for WoW for the above reasons, the community here appears to be a PvP loving one, and that is WoW's biggest weakness. But with the constant comparisons to WoW are we not in a way admitting that WoW is good by giving it the status of a benchmark that should be beaten?

There are a small few STYLES of MMO that you seem to not realize. Asheron's Call represents a style though it could be argued that it is similar to UO in a way. I will say WoW represents another style even if it is a clone of AC2s template, but only because that makes the template easier to identify and explain.(FFXI is its own beast entirely, but it on the spectrum wherever you like) These two games are on the opposite ends of the spectrum with EQ being closer to WoW and EQ2 being much closer. If I were to expand on this list I would put Aion on top of the WoW template along with countless other recently released MMOs. The problem I had with this quote was the fact that you basically said  "of course it is similar, its an MMO" which is wrong in so many ways. You have probably played many MMOs as most people here have, but you're missing experience in MMOs with a diverse template.. everything you have probably played either was made as a WoW clone or WoW used parts of it in its own template.  At the end of the day most of the MMOs people call clones pretty much ARE clones, there are other ways to make MMOs other than being a spawn of WoW - being an MMO does not automatically make you similar to WoW but it IS easy to spot those that are intentionally similar.

Most of the failed clones kill themselves, half of the population are current WoW players looking for something FRESH and NEW. After a short time they leave. The game usually is TOO much like WoW.. they would rather go back to WoW and not have to start over due to the only difference being an engline overhaul

The real question is... why are people so stubborn to admit wow is the best... when deep down they know it is which is exactly why they always have to compare everything else to it...

"Blizzard is a corporate giant"

I still remember the days when Blizzard so just a tiny office... lol...

"As for these forums, there seems to be alot of dislike for WoW"

MMORPG.com is wow hating paradise... where all the little kids come to QQ QQ QQ...

"the community here appears to be a PvP loving one, and that is WoW's biggest weakness."

You can't make a long lasting mmo that is primarily pvp based... WoW proved it and WaR was dumb enough to defy it and now look at how epic fail WaR is...

Frozn,

Nothing in your comment was factually acurate, but this one is pretty easy to disprove.

Ever hear of Eve?  Does AC count as long lasting?

Thanks for your replies, I'll try and answer you best I can.

-Wrender, Im not trying to get people to start or stop playing WoW, you missed the point of the blog completely.

-ivan50265, no not all MMO's are trying to appeal to the masses, look at some of the recent games, Darkfall for example, they are more than happy to aim their game at a relative niche market.

- Fr0z1nDuDe, why is WoW the best? Its a matter of opinion, I think to really answer the question possed by this blog the answer is in bagnols reply, and is actually my shared opinion too.

- And finaly Druz, you said:

"The problem I had with this quote was the fact that you basically said "of course it is similar, its an MMO" which is wrong in so many ways."

I think you miss understood what I was saying, maybe I didn't make it clear. What I mean is, it is the people saying "its wow like" that have the perception that if its an MMO, it must be like WoW, not my view.

Anyone that says WoW is the best obviously never played EQ in its prime. Yes i'm an EQ vet. EQ had more races...more classes, bigger and more realistic and expansive world. What did WoW do to be such a hit? Simple 1st it was at the right place at the right time, MMOs were catching on and a lot of people started playing them across sea as well. 2nd anyone can play WoW, I have a friend's bro who is 12 and had a pally in his 50s when the cap was 60. @Sortis

Q. What did WOW do to be such a hit?

A. Design their graphics to run on a highschool to college student's computer. Why do people not realize how basic this is to their success? Throughout the history of MMOs, any game that required a gaming graphics card was automatically a NICHE game, because a very low percentage of computers sold new actually had such cards.

So WoW broke the mold by using "cartoony" graphics that let a moderate graphics card run the game. Therefore, they were the ONLY MMO that could actually address the mass market. Nobody else could (excepting Runescape and the like).

To make things easier for Blizzard, the "real" gaming companies' devs were competing for bragging rights on how many (generally unoptimized) eye candy textures they could jack into their game! Seriously, look at their dev comments - "there's no computer on the planet that can run our game with all graphics options turned to full" was an actual comment by EQ2's developers. Way to chop your target market to a fraction of its potential size lol.

My opinion is that WoW didn't win by being the best MMO. WoW won by being the FIRST MMO younger people could play, and that set the experience for the whole market.
