By one definition or another, many of us are probably addicted to the Internet in some fashion. China may soon become the first country to officially define Internet addiction and register its findings with the World Health Organization. The definition arise out of research performed at Beijing's Military General Hospital, and is expected to be adopted by China's Health Ministry in 2009.
So, what does it take to make you an Internet addict, at least according to China? If you find yourself using the Internet for more than six hours per day and exhibit at least one of a number of symptoms, you could be addicted. The list of symptoms is about what you would expect, including things like insomnia, difficulty concentrating, mental or physical stress, irritation, and spending time wishing you were online.

Internet is not an addiction. It is about basic human needs.
Here are some list of needs off the top of my head:
1. Long distance communication. Internet provides.
2. Information and knowledge. Internet provides.
3. Socializing. Internet provides.
4. See uncommon things. Internet provides.
5. Porn, porn, porn!!. Internet provides.
6. Download random crap. Internet provides.
7. Obtain stuff that are other wise difficult to. Internet provides.
8. Pretend to be someone you are not. Internet provides.
There are probably many more, but I think I made my point.
If people can satisfy many of their needs in one place, of course they will spend alot of time in that place. Even if the place virtual.
Tue Nov 11 2008 2:27AM ReportAdding some more comments.
I like to see someone that suffer from internet withdrawl.
"My body trembles uncontrollably when I don't use internet for at least 6 hours a day, help me!!"
BTW, remember how China kinda have a history of frowning upon their people get too much information and knowledge?
I am just thinking to much.
Tue Nov 11 2008 2:40AM ReportChina is not a free country. they go against human freedom, so they dont want people to use internet too much, just in case they find a lot of information. There is why.
Tue Nov 11 2008 3:52AM ReportDon't talk rubbish alakram.
Addicition is the disorder, whether you become addicted to gambling, the internet or gaming, it doesn't change the fact you have an addiction.
And for the record, there is an gaming addiction rehabilitation centre in Amsterdam, so whilst China may be the first country to register it as a medical condition, they aren't the first to recognise it as a problem that needs to be treated.
Tue Nov 11 2008 6:14AM ReportI do agree with the part that some people becomes too addicted to the internet (myself included).
However, whether or not it is so severe it is considered a disorder, it really varies between people.
The reasons why people become addicted to internet usually lies somewhere in real life. This really speaks more about the state of our current society than the internet being a problem. However, I am not really blaming society, it is just I find the interaction between modern society and its people very facinating.
I can give you examples all day, but I'l refrain from making this longer than it already is.
Wed Nov 12 2008 3:55AM ReportWouldn't you rather have somebody that's prone to addiction to be addicted to the internet? Damn near any other addiction out there is far far worse than an internet addiction. How many true addicts actually fully recover and kick the habbit forever? Virtually none.
Okay, so it's an addiction. Who cares? lol....
Since when is China a shining example of anything? We gonna have caffiene addiction centers next? Rediculous....
Wed Nov 12 2008 8:17AM ReportI am addicted to life, however, I don't find the prospect of walking into a rehabilitation center for addiction to living to be in my best interest.
Wed Nov 12 2008 9:15AM ReportNot surprised, I am. How many people played themselved to death in enter cafés there? Not counting in lives of course, they obviously didn't have any... :}
Internet addiction, fatal symptom; playing WoW in an internet café!
Wed Nov 12 2008 12:55PM ReportThere is some amongst us with virtually no self-control when it comes to this thing, but to treat it as an addiction is just idiotic. They rather should do some research into addiction in itself, as we all are prone to it. Most of us display some form of self-control allthough it's quite easy to loose yourself into some game or browsing the web. Many times I looked at the watch realising it was beyond midnight and wondered where the evening have gone oO
Wed Nov 12 2008 2:36PM ReportHere is what I think. I think we are forcably addicted to work and money. I am a 34 year old father of three amazing daughters. My childhood spawns from a family of drug dealers/users and alchoholics. I don't do drugs and I seldome drink because I have seen what it can do to people. The reason members of my family for which aren't alive any longer dealed drugs? Because they made more money than breaking thier back 12 hours. Obviously this doesn't make it right, but the fact of the matter is, the internet is just the same. Just reversed
we are forcably addicted to work. The more you work, the more money you have, the less worries you have. It isn't enough today for people to just work 8 hours and be able to pay the bills. In almost all middle class households, the man and woman are forced to work long hours just to be allowed to have a roof, vehicle to go grocery shopping with, and clothes for thier children.
An addiction we should be focusing on is the one that all corprorate leaders have. Money. Let's make it so the average American only makes just enough not to be able to succeed and be in competition with us tycoons. At the same time, we'll make butt loads of money and go buy private jets. Then we'll write them off and convince the world that if they try hard enough, they might have one too some day. But they won't, because we already saw to that by structuring income vs outcome to keep them just below rightful living means.
Not sure about China, but American corporations want internet addiction. It's the only drug that offers the dream of success, glamor and love all in one. What's better, everyone can afford it and it's legal. As a matter of fact, it's genious.
Just a thought....
Wed Nov 12 2008 2:43PM ReportBut Mithios, the reason addictions are bad is because they normally have unwanted outcomes. such as gambling, you could potentially lose all of your life savings because of this addiction. When it comes to work, you are benefiting society and your countries economy so it can't be looked on as something bad... not to mention, most people need something to suck up their time because without it they would just get addicted to some other time sink hole like WoW.
Wed Nov 12 2008 9:04PM ReportSo let me mention a few things an addiction to work may cause: Insomnia, depression due to stress (Trust me, it happened to my mother), alienating your own family due to being too much at the workplace, life altering injuries caused by wearing out your body.
Thu Nov 13 2008 2:38PM ReportSo you see, too much work is bad too.
