Hi folks,
Wel this is a quick post to be updated later with more flesh to it's meagre bones, howver I wanted to briefly touch on Magic in MMO's.
It sucks. In RPGs being a wielder of magic meant you were capable of far more than fireballs and frost novas. You could change the weather, Purge evil, transform the landscape and the minds of it's citizens.
Today's MMOs are all about combat magic and battles, Roleplaying is a secondary if not the last concern in design.
It is time to re-instate the power to magic and giving the truly powerful real power and all the choices and risk that comes with it.
I am thinking of cantrips and sleight of hand, followed by magic by focus items, them magic by gesture and words, followed by magic by thought alone. Spells would be either from each discreet 'level'or by a combination of 2 or more of the levels of magic.
Non combat and some in combat magic would affect the world permanently.
The prices for weilding such power would be a balance between skill/choice/risk.

Quite simply put the resources needed to have this amazing magic system, that effects weather, land, OTHER people...well its beyond what we have now, and to be quite simple battle magic is easily implemented. Secondly i dont want to be playing a game where some little kid comes along tosses a snow storm on my arse and it effects my gameplay. And im not quite sure where you are going with your magic system,
Thu Feb 14 2008 8:12AMThere is certainly such a thing as too much power, but I agree with the general idea of the blog -- magic has become FAR less magical than it used to be. In fact, EQ is pretty much the only game that ever had magical magic, and I find that a real shame.
Thu Feb 14 2008 12:22PMI agree with the OP. Saying its not possible resource-wise or cannot be balanced is just plain stupid. It's already been balanced for them, it's called Dungeons and Dragons...
The entire school of enchanting has turned into buffs galore, conjuration only summons food and drink, and 90% of your spells are evocation. I certainly think it would be DIFFICULT for devs to implement these features... impossible? I don't think so.
Heck DDO did a wonderful job making use of spells like Web, Color Spray and many others (I got my magician to like lvl 2 lol). The idea of regening mana is what is over powered in this world of magic, so they have to scale back the spells to account for it.
